FIGHTING WORDS: LESNAR VS HUNT, CORMIER VS SILVA

UFC 200 is looking pretty insane!

Fighting Words pits two of our Generation Iron MMA writers against each other in a heated debate on big fight predictions. Jonathan Salmon: So we all know that UFC 200 has taken a blow with Jon Jones being scratched from the card, but there are still some great fights to be had, namely in the form of Brock Lesnar vs Mark Hunt. But before we get to that fight we have to discuss Daniel Cormier vs Anderson Silva. If you ask me this is the biggest question mark on the card. Cormier has the wrestling advantage and Silva has the striking advantage. I think a lot of people will me in favor of the Light Heavyweight champion, but I’m not convinced. Lionel Harris-Spence: While I love the mystery, riddle and enigma, that is Anderson Silva, there’s no way he’s taking DC down. While he does have the slight advantage on the feet, you’ve got to remember that DC is part bear and with one swing of his paw could put the lights out on the already shaky Anderson Silva. Daniel Cormier is too big and too strong to let his fight get away from him. JS: The thing is that I’m not convinced DC is sharp enough to keep up with Silva. If Silva is patient and calculating enough then I can see him picking apart DC as he rushes in. It’s all about who can impose their will and I’m thinking after the Bisping loss that Silva has some ninja tricks up his sleeves. The Pick: Anderson Silva by TKO round 2. LHS: If we’re betting on Ninja’s, I’m with you, Silva is definitely on some stealth stuff. However, we’re talking MMA here and if Daniel gets him to the ground, it’s a wrap. Not only is he the bigger fighter, his wrestling skills are second to none and his submission game isn’t too bad either. I got DC by TKO round 2 JS: We’re not finished yet though. We still have Brock Lesnar and Mark Hunt to consider. In my opinion the “Super Samoan” has been too active and too savvy on the feet for a great deal of his opponents in the UFC. I’m thinking he’s going to Piece Brock up on the feet and make Lesnar regret ever coming out of retirement. Mark Hunt sends Brock Lesnar back to the WWE with a KO victory in the first round. LHS: Wow, confident. But if we know anything about MMA it’s to expect the unexpected. While Mark is definitely a knock out machine and a nightmare on the feet, if Brock Lesnar could get this fight to the ground things could get real interesting. Not only is Brock a big body, but he’s also a collegiate wrestler. If Lesnar gets top position, I don’t think Mark Hunt’s underhooks will be enough to get him off of him. Combine that with some ground and pound, and it may be lights out for the super samoan. Oh and did I mention it’s a 3 round fight? Lesnar probably won’t get too gassed, which gives him a real chance to remain aggressive. Lesnar by TKO round 2! Who do you think will win Saturday night?
