60-year-old Rolando Yanga confronted the man before he was followed home.
Rolando Yanga, a 60-year-old gym custodian, was shot and killed near his home after being followed home by a gym member.
According to police, Yanga confronted the gym member, who had a reputation of violating rules of the establishment. The shooting, which occurred over the weekend, was reportedly following a disagreement about how the gym member would behave while at Fitness 19 gym at the Westlake Shopping Center.
San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe spoke on the incident:
“The confrontation here was over cleanliness at the gym.”
Yanga was a father of four and grandfather. He was married to his wife for 24 years.

Rolando Yanga Killed Over Gym Argument
Maarij Afridi, 21-year-old suspect, was told that he wasn’t following gym rules and he did not handle it well.
“Walking around barefoot, not taking care of cleaning things, putting things in the toilet that didn’t belong there, and the victim called him out on it.”
The attack was caught on surveillance cameras. Yanga left his job at the gym around 7pm on Sunday. He was headed toward his home on South Mayfair Avenue and was being followed by Afridi. A total of eight gunshots from a 10mm handgun can be heard on the camera.
Wagstaffe described the attack to a local news outlet.
“Gets within 15 feet of him and opens fire on him, hitting the victim. The victim went down and the suspect then walked up to him and pumped some additional rounds into him at point-blank range.”
Afridi has been charged with murder and the special circumstance of lying in wait. If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole. Afridi’s mother, Zaib Un Nisa Afridi, drove her son on the night of the attack and is being charged as an accessory.
