Finding a proper workout routine can be hard, whether you use bodybuilding apps, make up your own, or in this case, want to follow that of a Mr. Olympia. In this case, if you want to follow the workout routine of 212 Olympian, Shaun Clarida, we’ve got you covered. Shaun Clarida has competed in the Men’s 212 division for many years hungry for an Olympia win, and he took the 212 crown in 2020 and 2022. Not only that, he also showcased a physique that exemplifies what a Men’s 212 bodybuilder should look like, with the right amount of muscle mass and being absolutely shredded. Now he’s providing insight so that you can work towards developing your physique just like his.

About Shaun Clarida

Shaun Clarida 2022 Olympia

Shaun Clarida was born in New Jersey on September 5, 1982. Growing up, he was a very adventurous character, and his upbringing revolved around sports, and he was very competitive. Shaun took part in sports like wresting, gymnastics, baseball and basketball regularly.

Standing at only 5’2” and weighing only 98lbs, Shaun was not the tallest guy in the room nor was he the biggest. Due to the nature of his small size, he was bullied by his peers around him in school. Many said that he would never amount to anything in his sporting career, so he made sure to prove them wrong.

During his junior year of high school, Shaun Clarida became more focused on wrestling, which brought a lot of weight training into the picture. He loved performing the sport. He continued to improve and he needed to increase his strength. Eventually, Shaun began weight training and it quickly became something that he loved.

Shaun Clarida’s Schedule

Shaun Clarida is the definition of wake up, train, eat, sleep, repeat. He’s already detailed how he utilized quarantine to further dedicate his entire day to bodybuilding. Now let’s breaks down the specifics of what his entire day looks like. Check it out below:

  • Wake up at 4am and head to the gym.
  • Fasted cardio training at 4:30am (30-45 minutes).
  • Follow up with ab & core training (25 minutes).
  • Return from gym and eat breakfast.
  • Relax for a few hours and consume three more meals.
  • Return to gym at 5:30pm and train (2 hours)
  • Posing practice
  • Return from gym and eat last meal at 9pm
  • Sleep at 10pm

As you can see from this breakdown, Shaun Clarida spends nearly four hours total in the gym, but this is not all strictly weightlifting. It includes just under an hour of cardio. While this might be surprising to some – it’s key in bringing in conditioning, especially leading up to a show.

As you can see, Shaun Clarida uses high volume during his workouts. It actually is to the point where people may say that it is junk volume, but you have to keep in mind that every body is different, and this clearly works for him.

How Much Weight Should You Use?

Now, Shaun Clarida has some crazy strength, so he may lift a little more than you, or maybe not. Regardless of the weight you use, if you are following Shaun Clarida’s workout, you can still follow the same rep range and amount of sets.

It is definitely important to hit all your reps, so starting with a weight you can confidently hit is key to maximizing optimal growth, but do not go too light. You should aim to use a heavy enough load to push yourself to stimulate muscle growth. The weight should be heavy enough that you can hit the rep range for each set with good form, but the last rep or two should be a struggle.

Once you feel comfortable enough with a certain weight you should look to increase it but stay in that rep range, and see what that does for you and your workout.

Stretching

When following Shaun Clarida’s workout, or any workout for that matter, be sure to stretch out and get blood flowing to those muscles and joints before, during, and after this workout. You’ll certainly want to incorporate some dynamic stretching before and static stretching after your workout for the best results.

When it comes to high volume days, especially those leg days, your body is going to take a beating, and if you sprinkle in cardio, taking care of your body is more than key for overall health and longevity. Stretching will promote muscle growth while aiding in recovery and proper rest for your body.

Fasted Cardio Before Training

Shaun Clarida workout

Shaun Clarida also clarifies why he wakes up so early to do cardio before any meal or training. He believes that fasted cardio brings in more results – something that has been repeated in past interviews we’ve conducted.

He also finds himself more motivated to do a complete cardio session if it’s before training. After two hours of lifting heavy weights, he might be more enticed to skip out on his cardio training. This leads to worse results. So he gets it out of the way first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and before the real training begins.

Shaun Clarida Interview on Workout Routine for Olympia

If you want to see the man himself explain his workouts, then you can watch Shaun Clarida give an in-depth look to his workout plan in our latest GI Exclusive interview segment above!

Wrap Up

You may notice that Shaun Clarida doesn’t go into detail about what exact exercises he performs during his training. That’s because, while tips can be helpful, it’s largely useless. Each individual reacts differently. Blindly following one champion’s exact workout regimen will not necessarily yield the same results.

Can You Take DHEA And HGH While On TRT? | Victor Martinez Reacts

Victor Martinez shares advice on how to best supplement TRT treatment and opens up about drug testing in professional sports

The Generation Iron Podcast, hosted by Victor Martinez, Edwin Mejia Jr., and Vlad Yudin, recently delved into the world of bodybuilding, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), peptides, drug testing, and steroids. In this recap, we’ll explore the key insights shared during the podcast and the implications of FDA’s classification of peptides as schedule 2 drugs.

Victor Martinez is currently in Croatia as he continues his travels with Busta Rhymes training across the world. Luckily, Victor was able to host the podcast via video call to talk about the latest events in bodybuilding – and share his opinion about recent developments. He also spends some time breaking down his advice for those looking to supplement TRT treatment for best (and safest) results.

Victor Martinez also debates with the GI crew about the drug testing in sports. With the recent news that UFC will be parting ways with the Anti-Doping Agency, is this a sign that drug testing is less important to leagues than headlining events and superstar athletes? Should all pro sports simply stop drug testing?

All questions are answered and opinions laid out to honestly in the latest episode of the Generation Iron Podcast. Let’s dive in.

TRT and Supplementing with DHEA and HGH

A fan reached out with a question regarding the use of DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) and human growth hormone (HGH) to complement their TRT regimen. Victor Martinez, a seasoned bodybuilder, endorsed the idea, emphasizing the potential benefits of using HGH alongside TRT. He also suggested that peptides could be an excellent addition to TRT therapy, as many hormone clinics offer comprehensive packages combining these therapies for better health and effectiveness.

Of course, Victor Martinez also emphasizes that these choices should be consulted with a medical professional. For those already on TRT treatment, they will be receiving regular blood tests to ensure that their levels are ideal during TRT treatment. Adding other substances into the mix will effect those results – and may affect how a doctor reacts and alters your TRT treatment.

Ultimately, TRT is meant to be a treatment that brings your testosterone levels back to normal. It is not meant to be a way to boost muscle mass. So for those who want to supplement TRT with DHEA or HGH, should do so via the proper channels and have them prescribed when a medical professional feels it is necessary.

Peptides Classification as Schedule 2 Drugs

The podcast also discussed the FDA’s classification of peptides as schedule 2 drugs, raising concerns about the lack of research in the health industry. Victor Martinez believes this classification is due to the FDA’s limited understanding of peptides and their long-term effects.

Despite this classification, he does not anticipate a complete ban on peptides in the United States. Different states may adopt varying regulations, and individuals could purchase peptides from other states or resort to the black market. However, this raises concerns about oversight and product quality.

Mike O’Hearn has also discussed this topic at length with one of the leading Hormone Health Clinics in the country, Titan Medical. They covered all angles of the recent FDA decision. It’s a valuable watch for anyone who uses peptides or is interested in peptide treatment.

Should Pro Sports Stop Drug Testing?

The podcast highlighted the UFC’s recent decision to sever ties with the anti-doping agency, potentially signaling a shift in priorities. Victor Martinez suggested that the UFC prioritizes its financial interests over strict anti-doping measures, especially when dealing with high-profile athletes like Conor McGregor. Vlad Yudin echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the UFC’s focus on revenue.

This led to a debate about drug testing and the use of steroids in professional sports, drawing parallels with bodybuilding’s lenient approach to drug testing in the IFBB Pro league. Victor Martinez and Vlad Yudin debated whether all sports should stop testing for performance-enhancing drugs. While Victor argued that maintaining an even playing field is crucial, Vlad advocated for the idea that allowing steroid use levels the playing field.

Vlad points out that with current drug testing standards, there have been many athletes who used steroids successfully in pro sports – only to be caught long after. It’s clear that the playing field is not level currently with drug testing measures in place.

If drug testing was completely removed, then anyone can do whatever substance they feel is best for their success. This freedom of choice, in Vlad’s opinion, could potentially be a more even playing field than current pro sports have today.

However, Victor Martinez also points out that steroid use for recreational athletic purposes is illegal. So even if a league did not drug test, certain athletes would feel at a disadvantage if they did not want to break the law. Thus, without any form of drug regulations in pro sports – you still have an uneven playing field.

Conflict of Interest in Bodybuilding Coaching

Edwin Mejia Jr. introduced a unique aspect of bodybuilding where athletes training under the same coach may compete against each other. Is it strange to have athletes who will ultimately compete against each other trained by the same coach? Victor Martinez cited golf as a similar example, emphasizing that the ultimate outcome is determined on competition day.

Victor further points out that rival athletes training together can actually help push and motivate them to greater heights. They can play mind games with each other, see how hard the other one trains, and get a up close look at the person’s physique

In a recent example of Derek Lunsford training with Hadi Choopan, you have the current defending Mr. Olympia champion training with the man who got second place right below him. Victor Martinez wonders what Derek’s mindset was during that workout. Did he use it to gain a psychological advantage over the current champion? What opportunities can come from him standing and training side by side with the defending champion just 6 weeks before they face off?

Ultimately, Victor Martinez doesn’t see an issue or conflict of interest in one coach training multiple pro athletes who compete in the same event. The more athletes who succeed the better for the coach’s business and reputation. Victor also points out that at one point Charles Glass, a legendary coach in bodybuilding, was training four top athletes who all competed against each other at the Mr. Olympia.

Showcasing Physiques Pre-Competition

In relation to the above topic, Victor Martinez questioned the modern practice of bodybuilders revealing their physiques in the final weeks of contest prep. He recalled a time when bodybuilders like Dorian Yates kept their physiques hidden, creating an aura of mystery. This shift towards greater visibility may have implications for the competitive dynamics in the sport.

Even just 10 years ago, competitors like Phil Heath and Kai Greene would always be covered in baggy hoodies. The notion of giving physique updates three, two, or even one week out from competition is strange to Victor.

While clearly this is a sign of the times changing and adapting to social media, Victor Martinez wonders if this helps or hurts the athletes as they prep for competition.

Wrap Up

In summary, the Generation Iron Podcast provided insights into TRT, peptides, drug testing, and the use of steroids in the world of bodybuilding. The discussion also touched on the FDA’s classification of peptides as schedule 2 drugs and the UFC’s stance on anti-doping measures, emphasizing the influence of financial interests in professional sports. The podcast offered a comprehensive look at the current landscape of bodybuilding and its unique characteristics, such as coaches training athletes who compete against each other.

Benefits Of A Treadmill

Overall, you may be wondering why you would even buy one of these pieces of equipment. Why put the money towards a bike or other gym equipment? What types of benefits does a treadmill actually bring.

  • Build Strength & Endurance

Running is a great form of cardio to really build that endurance base and the more you continue with it, the more your lung and heart capacity will increase. Since running increases the demand on the circulatory system, it makes your heart work harder to get blood to areas that need it, thus leading to overall growth in strength (1).

  • Lose Weight

Running burns more calories than most exercises and as we all know, weight loss comes from more calories leaving your body than coming in. It can get your metabolism going to only increase that fat burn and changing up the variations to include something like high-intensity interval work can be great for your overall weight loss and even suppress your appetite (2).

  • Avoid Inconveniences

Using a treadmill allows for a convenient workout by avoiding all of the inconveniences that occur on the open road. You don’t have to worry about weather or seasonal changes which is great because you can enjoy a workout in a comfortable temperature without the fear of being rained on. You also don’t have to worry about getting to a gym and hoping a treadmill is available, which can just be a pain.

  • Try Different Variations

With a treadmill, you are not tied to just simply running. With the ability to adjust an incline when you want or change speeds when you desire, using one can really target certain aspects of your training without the monotony of running on the open road.

What To Look For In A Treadmill

  • Durability: Your treadmill should last a long time and be made from high-quality material so you never have to worry.

How the Overhead Shrug Improves Shoulder Health & Posture

overhead shrug

The overhead shrug simultaneously works your shoulder and trap muscles to improve posture.

The shrug is a highly effective exercise for strengthening your back, specifically targeting the upper traps. Engaging in this simple lift can significantly reduce the risk of back-related injuries. One variation is the overhead shrug, which transitions the movement from pulling to pushing, which can improve shoulder health and prevent neck injuries (1). It does this by forcing your upper traps, usually weak from underuse, to do most of the lifting and strengthen them.

You can do the overhead shrug with barbells, dumbbells, or kettlebells. However, we’ll look at the overhead barbell shrug for this exercise guide. You’ll get a step-by-step guide on how to do this exercise, its benefits, and more movements you can use to build your upper traps.

Techniques & Muscles Worked

The overhead shrug works on your upper traps, toning and strengthening them (2). This isolation exercise also hits the fibers covering your neck’s posterior. This engages your rotator cuff, rhomboids, shoulders, levator scapulae, and upper back.

Using the correct form to prevent injuries is essential when doing the overhead shrug. You’ll need an Olympic barbell or a standard barbell for this routine. Here’s a step-by-step guide showing the actions to take when doing an overhead shrug.

  1. Unrack a barbell and put it in the front rack position.
  2. Then, press it overhead using an overhand grip. Your hands should be about two times your shoulder width with your arms straight. This is your starting position.
  3. Next, brace your abs, shrug your shoulders towards your ears, and pause for a second or two. Keep your back straight throughout the movement.
  4. Slowly lower them back to the starting position to complete the rep.
  5. Repeat for the number of reps you desire.

Benefits

Overhead shrugs are efficient and allow you to train your back and shoulders with one exercise. Due to the overhead movement, this exercise hits the entire upper and middle back. Below are some of the benefits that overhead shrugs offer.

Engage & Strengthen Your Upper Traps

The overhead shrug targets and strengthens your upper traps. Lifting the weight overhead creates tension in your traps, causing them to contract and do the lift. This tension also leads to muscle growth in your traps and upper back.

Better Shoulder Health & Stability

Overhead shrugs strengthen the muscles that support your shoulders. As a result, you’ll get better stability in your shoulders and less risk of injuries. Doing this exercise can also help you achieve better form during activities that require good shoulder mobility.

Improve Your Posture

Your trap muscles support your upper back and spine. Strengthening them with this routine counteracts the effects of slouching and sitting for long periods. As a result, this exercise improves your posture.

Stronger & Bigger Back

Training your trap muscles will make your back look bigger and stronger. Well-developed traps are part of what builds a good bodybuilding physique. Strengthening your traps also strengthens your back and upper body.

Prevent Injuries

Athletes often focus their training on the muscles they can see in front. This leads to having a massive chest and a weak back. As a result, they become more prone to shoulder and neck injuries. The overhead shrug helps to strengthen your back and prevent that.

Carryover to Other Routines

The overhead shrug is excellent for your back and improves shoulder mobility. Therefore, it has carryover to routines like the bench press, the Olympic snatch, and the clean and jerk. Doing the overhead shrug regularly will improve your form for those exercises.

Overhead Shrug Alternatives

While the shrug is a great exercise, it’s limited regarding time under tension. The range of motion is also short. Here are some alternative movements that also target your upper traps.

Cable Face Pulls

The cable face pull is an overhead shrug alternative and targets your upper traps and posterior delt. It reinforces your shoulder health and improves upper body stability. This exercise also gives the traps a full range of motion, and the time under tension is better.

Upright Rows

The upright row is an excellent exercise for building your upper traps. It offers a fuller range of motion and allows for more significant loading. However, using proper form for this routine is essential to prevent injuries.

Farmer’s Walk

The farmer’s walk is a convenient and straightforward exercise that targets your upper traps and forearms. You can do them with dumbbells or kettlebells, which puts your traps under tension for longer.

FAQs

What does overhead shrugs work?

Overhead shrugs work on your back, shoulder, and arms. This exercise is a great way to strengthen and add size to your back. It’s a two-parter that involves an overhead extension and shrug to hit your traps and shoulders.

What muscles do overhead shrugs work out?

The overhead shrug is an isolation exercise for your upper traps. This exercise targets the entirety of your upper back and also works on your delts. Check the exercise guide above for a complete list of the muscles worked.

Which muscle does the shoulder shrug strengthen?

The shoulder shrug is an exercise that strengthens your trapezius muscles. As a result, this exercise is good for your shoulder health and helps prevent neck injuries.

Working your traps extends beyond the barbell shrugs for adequate muscle growth. The barbell shrug is good for isolating your traps but has limitations. Try the overhead shrug to simultaneously target your shoulder muscles and trap muscles, improving your shoulder health and posture. It’ll also carry over to Olympic lifts and CrossFit movements like the snatch that require excellent shoulder stability and mobility.

Chris Bumstead is looking as good as ever heading into the 2023 Olympia!

Chris Bumstead is three weeks away from defending his Classic Physique title once again on the Mr. Olympia stage. The four-time champion is looking to make it five in a row and might be bringing his best package to the stage come November. Recently, Bumstead showed off his latest physique update and posing video on Instagram.

Bumstead won the 2019 Mr. Olympia Contest title in Classic Physique and has not relinquished it since. He will be going for five in a row come November and will be the favorite once again. During the 2022 competition, Bumstead was challenged by Ramon Rocha Queiroz but still seemed to be in a league of his own — and he did it with a bicep injury.

Bumstead has faced many obstacles over the course of his career and his been able to overcome them and win at all costs. Despite rumors of retirement, Bumstead is focused on winning the biggest show of the year, and taking home yet another Mr. Olympia title in the classic physique divison.

The Classic Physique division has improved in talent and is top heavy at the moment. Ramon Rocha Queiroz pushed Bumstead to the limits during the 2022 Olympia and is coming off an Arnold Classic title. Urs Kalecinski has inserted himself into the top three in the division over the last year. Even with all of this happening, Bumstead remains the name to beat and the favorite on the biggest stage.

Breon Ansley is also returning to Classic Physique this year. Previously, he had announced a switch to Men’s 212 for the upcoming competition, which prompted Bumstead to crack a few jokes about Breon running from him. However, the Classic Physique division has recently made adjustments to its weight restrictions, allowing for a little more size. There is now extra weight added on allowing a more even playing field for smaller competitors. This prompted Ansley to remain in Classic Physique, and try to reclaim his title.

Despite all of the new talent in the division, Chris Bumstead continues to be the favorite to win the Olympia and it is a tall task for competitors to take him down. With the way he looks in recent updates, Bumstead might be bringing his very best to the stage.

Top Notch Workout Programs

Boostcamp programs

One notable program available in Boostcamp is the GZCL program, which is a linear progression (LP) training program designed by powerlifter Cody Lefever. This highly effective program, known for its effectiveness, is specifically built for people in the beginner to novice skillset. It is especially great for those in the honeymoon stage where they can keep adding weight every workout. Unlike most powerlifting programs that only strive to increase lifting numbers of the three main lifts (squat, the bench press, and deadlift), the GZCL method emphasizes accessory movements to both complement the strength gains of the main compound lifts AND stimulate hypertrophy, thus building muscle and strength simultaneously. The GZCL program, designed by a competitive powerlifter, is a perfect example of the effective progression scheme offered by Boostcamp.

Another popular powerlifting program available in Boostcamp is the nSuns 531 Linear Progression Powerlifting Program, written by Jim Wendler which is highly regarded among Reddit users. There are different variations of this program suited for beginners, novice, intermediate, and advanced, but the outcomes are all similar; lifters have been able to quickly put on significant strength to their bench, squat, deadlift, and overhead press.

These are just a few programs on the Boostcamp App that make it stand out from other workout apps.

Austrian Death Machine is a metal band with a fascinating history and an unusual twist in their musical approach. Founded by Tim Lambesis, the band is known for its metalcore music, unique lyrics, and their dedication to all things Arnold Schwarzenegger. Their name is a nod to the former Mr. Olympia and action movie star, combining the image of Arnold with the brutal sound of a death metal machine.

The band’s inception dates back to 2008, and they released their debut album titled ‘Total Brutal’ in 2008. The album was well-received by fans and critics alike, and it set the stage for their distinctive approach to music. Songs like ‘Get to the Choppa,’ ‘If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It,’ and ‘Come With Me If You Want to Lift’ showcased the band’s love for all things Schwarzenegger and established their reputation as a metal act with a unique sense of humor.

However, Austrian Death Machine fell silent after their 2011 album ‘Double Brutal,’ leaving fans wondering if they’d ever return. Then, in a surprising turn of events, they resurfaced with a brand new music video, ‘No Pain, No Gain,’ in 2023. But what makes this comeback even more interesting is the involvement of the mass monster bodybuilder Craig Golias.

This surprising collaboration between a bodybuilder and a metal band known for their Schwarzenegger-themed lyrics and relentless sound is a match made in heaven. Fans of both the fitness and metal worlds can certainly make sure to add this song onto their workout motivation playlist.

Austrian Death Machine’s unique blend of metalcore and Arnold Schwarzenegger-inspired lyrics has resonated with fans who share a love for both metal and bodybuilding. The band’s return to the music scene is a welcome one, and their collaboration with Craig Golias adds an exciting dimension to their work.

Craig Golias spoke directly with Generation Iron on how he came to become a member of the band:

“Me and the other singer, Tim, met off Instagram for a workout. He invited me over to his house on Christmas in 2021 and we jammed out in the studio. I was in metal bands in my teen years so I had experience. We decided we should do a collab and we have been working on songs for over a year now. And just today finally it got published through a record label.”

For both fans of Austrian Death Machine and of Craig Golias, this doesn’t seem to be only a one-off collaboration. Golias has noted that they are already scheduled to film a second music video with more updates coming soon. Until then, enjoy Craig Golias putting his full HUGE energy into ‘No Pain, No Gain.’

Nick Walker Shows Off Insane Back Three Weeks Out Of 2023 Olympia

Nick Walker Instagram

Nick Walker looks primed and ready for the 2023 Olympia in three weeks.

The 2023 Olympia is just three weeks away and all competitors are putting the finishing touches on their physiques. This includes Nick Walker. The Mutant finished third in last year’s Mr. Olympia competition and is looking to climb even higher. Recently, he showed off an insane back shot showing off his muscle mass and conditioning.

In a relatively short amount of time, Nick Walker has become one of the most anticipated bodybuilders in the IFBB Pro league. His massive size and conditioning have been lauded by fans and experts ever since he came onto the scene. Fast forward to 2022, Walker earned a third place finish at the 2022 Olympia – only behind champion Hadi Choopan and Men’s Open newcomer Derek Lunsford.

Nick Walker than jumped into the 2023 Arnold Classic just three months later. He brought a physique that was clearly more conditioned than his Mr. Olympia appearance but was perhaps slightly smaller and less full – reducing his famous “freak factor.” Due to this, he fell just short and landed second place.

Now, Walker is preparing to take the stage at the Olympia in three weeks and is looking competition ready.

Nick Walker Ready To Compete At The Olympia

Nick Walker took to Instagram to share another physique update. This time, it was showing off his insane back progression.

“3 weeks out 🥞🥞🥞🥞”

Nick Walker will enter the 2023 Olympia hoping to improve upon his standing once again. He went up two spots last year and is looking to do the same once again. This would land him in the top spot. Walker has asserted himself as one of the top competitors in Men’s Open and will likely contend for a title once again.

Now is the time where many have make their predictions and discuss what could happen on stage. This includes some competitors themselves.

Derek Lunsford is another bodybuilder who spoke out about the upcoming event. After his runner-up finish in 2022, Lunsford believes he will battle for the title once again. Lunsford was bested by Choopan back in December. He also believes that Walker and Samson Dauda will battle for third place.

It will all play out on stage come November 2-5 where Men’s Open will once again be the headline of the event.
