Bradley Martyn Goes Off About Bodybuilding Judging, Explains Why He Stopped Competing

Bradley Martyn

Bradley Martyn tells all.

Competitive bodybuilding isn’t for everybody. You may agree or disagree with that statement, but the reality is that some people have the genetic capability and the diligence to continue to push forward and make competing in bodybuilding a career. That said, it doesn’t mean that competitors with those same high qualities don’t call it quits anyhow.

Like it or not there are politics involved in bodybuilding just like most any other endeavor. While people may strive for the purity of a sport, the reality is that sometimes there are outside forces at work that lessen the credibility of a given endeavor.

Enter Bradley Martyn.

From the looks of the popular internet bodybuilding personality, you would think Bradley Martyn would do extremely well in competitive bodybuilding. He often posts viral videos showcasing his incredible physique and strength. In fact, Martyn is a veteran of competitive amateur bodybuilding and tried his hand at making the sport into a possible career. While he didn’t continue with competitive bodybuilding, Martyn has gone on to become a major success in the bodybuilding industry.

Still, the remained a question mark as to why Bradley Martyn stopped competing in the first place. He has the genetics, the confidence and the stage presence to back him up, so it has left many people scratching their heads as to why Martyn would decide to leave competitive bodybuilding behind. Now it seems that a recent interview with the bodybuilding personality is revealing the real reason behind his exit from the competitive side of the long standing athletic endeavor.

If we’re to believe Bradley Martyn then that is some pretty damning evidence to bring to light. It suggests that some bodybuilding shows aren’t based on merit but instead on who you know and how popular you are. If that’s the case it sadly wouldn’t be the first time in sporting history.

Bradley Martyn hasn’t shied away from being open and honest. In our previous Iron Cinema interview, he opened up about the suicide of his father, mental health, and his vision for his future.

What do you make of Bradley Martyn and his decision to quit competing in bodybuilding?

WATCH: Russian Synthol User’s Arms Explode

Strength Wars Movie

Previously highlighted Russian synthol abuser pays the price.

Not too long ago we posted about the latest synthol abuser in a long line of men addicted to synthol. This is basically an oil that can make your muscles appear larger – a substance that some may use sparingly to touch up bodyparts… but others use in an insane way to basically look like cartoon characters.

The truth is that this can be very dangerous and Kirill Tereshin is proof of that. This was a man who put so much synthol in his arms he looked like Popeye and now we are seeing, as reported by Kenny K.O., that his arms appear to have “exploded” or at the very least he required surgery due to serious health risks caused by the synthol. You can check out the entire thing (graphic imagery included – be warned!) in Kenny K.O.’s video above.

Dana White Says He ‘Expected’ Georges St-Pierre to Vacate Title…Wait, What?

Georges St-Pierre UFC 217 Generation Iron

Georges St-Pierre is leaving middleweight behind…

The news that former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre would be relinquishing his middleweight title before ever defending it was a disheartening, if somewhat foreseeable development. St-Pierre, who captured the title via a thrilling submission of Michael Bisping at UFC 217 last month following a four year absence from the sport, revealed an ongoing battle with colitis as the primary reasoning for his departure, telling TSN that he “didn’t think” he’d be back before formally relinquishing title days later.

“My fight at UFC 217 was one of the greatest nights of my life but I now need to take some time to focus on my health,” St-Pierre said. “Out of respect to the athletes and the sport, I don’t want to hold up the division. I will be giving up my belt and once I’m healthy I look forward to working with the UFC to determine what’s next in my career.”

As a result of St-Pierre’s sudden departure, the UFC quickly scrambled to promote the bout between interim middleweight champion Robert Whittaker and Luke Rockhold at UFC 221  into a fight for the now-vacant middleweight title. With some fans calling for St-Pierre’s head following the announcement and others appearing a little more understanding, one person who both sides probably didn’t expect an even-keeled response from was that of Dana White.

The UFC President, who infamously tore into St-Pierre following his initial departure from the sport back in 2013, had been adamant that St-Pierre would defend the middleweight title (should he win it) in the lead-up to UFC 217, saying that he’d be “pissed” if he chose to back out afterward.

While speaking with reporters following UFC Fresno last night, however, White issued a surprising about-face, claiming that he “expected” St-Pierre to vacate the middleweight title even before he had won it.

“I thought I would be (super pissed), but I’m not. I expected it,” White said.

“Listen, I had him sign a contract that said he would defend against Whittaker for a reason — because I knew he wouldn’t. He came out, he hand-picked Bisping and then went away again. So, whatever, it is what it is.

While it’s a refreshing bit of honesty from White, it is rather disheartening to hear him so readily admit that he allowed GSP to game the system for a one-time payout. “It is what it is” isn’t exactly a satisfying resolution to St-Pierre’s much-hyped return, and aside from essentially admitting to anyone who paid for UFC 217 that they were being sold wolf tickets the entire time — to borrow a phrase from Nick Diaz — it also speaks to the continuing disregard with which the UFC treats the very titles it uses to prop up its pay-per-views. But then, I suppose that’s what puts the “entertainment” in this form of “sports entertainment” we cling to, isn’t it?

Despite Being Passed Over for Title Shot, Brian Ortega Has A Bright Future

“I felt like I was going to die.”

To hear Cub Swanson describe the feeling of a Brian Ortega guillotine might sound a bit hyperbolic at first, but to be fair, what he actually said following his second round submission loss to “T-City” in the duo’s Fight Night 123 headliner was:

“It crushed my head, and it’s like my neck just flared up, and I panicked. I felt like I was going to die.”

If that still sounds like a bit of overcompensating to some of you more unforgiving fans, let’s first consider the source here. Cub Swanson is a 33-fight veteran who’s famously battled with the likes of Charles Oliveira (a submission savant in his own right), current featherweight champion Max Holloway, and Frankie Edgar to name a few. He’s fought in the King of the Cage, WEC, and the UFC. He once suffered this gruesome axe wound courtesy of a Jose Aldo flying knee, so I’m inclined to believe that he has a pretty good understanding of what it feels like to be on the verge of death. And it only took Swanson — a BJJ black belt under Rigan Machado — a few seconds trapped inside the iron grip of Ortega to elicit such a response.

It’s hell of an endorsement, to say the very least, and not the only one that Ortega has received since scoring the biggest victory of his career on Saturday night.

Now 13-0 as a professional, Ortega was already among elite company in one of the UFC’s most dangerous divisions, but now, he’s gone from an almost complete unknown (at least among casual fans) to the short list of title contenders, with some outlets even pondering whether he should be the next man to face Holloway.

UFC President Dana White was similarly blown away by Ortega’s performance over the weekend, calling him “the future of the sport” while speaking with reporters after the fight.

“Without a doubt, this kid’s obviously the future. Cub Swanson looked incredible tonight. … The problem is, this Ortega kid, if he even puts his hands on you man – and he had him in the first round, and I’ve never seen a guy up in a guillotine choke like that and lets go, repositions his hands, and gets the choke. Against a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt too. Unbelievable. Incredible performance that definitely puts this kid on the map.”

So yes, it’s probably about time that we start giving this Ortega kid the looks he deserves. Having notched 5 stoppage victories in the UFC and displayed an ever-improving striking game to compliment his boa constrictor-like grappling prowess, it might even be the time to start touting him as the “Prince That Was Promised” or whatever analogy you prefer (not like that’s ever backfired). But a star on the rise though he may be, it appears that, for now at least, “T-City” will have to put in a little more work before the UFC starts selling him as the next great challenger to Holloway’s throne.

Yes, despite being understandably pissed at former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar for breaking his orbital bone just a couple weeks out from his bout with Holloway at UFC 218 earlier in the month — a development which saw him replaced by the man who Holloway defeated to win the title, Jose Aldo — White was adamant that “The Answer” is still next in line for a shot at the featherweight title.

“There’s no way that Ortega jumps over Frankie,” White said. “Definitely not. … It all depends on timing. When do we fight again? Who’s ready? Who’s not?

“But yeah, Frankie definitely seems like the No. 1 contender.”

It’s the smartest decision White and the UFC have made in a while, frankly. Say what you will about the been there, done that feeling of Edgar’s most recent title bid (he’s currently 0-2 as a featherweight title challenger and has recently hinted that retirement might not be too far away), but it makes far more sense to give Holloway a win over another established veteran and Ortega some time to build a following than it does to throw them against one another in another shortsighted cash grab.

Needless to say, one would imagine that Ortega will be watching the Edgar-Holloway fight very closely, whenever it does come to fruition. In the meantime, maybe a matchup with Ricardo Lamas-Josh Emmett winner (aka Ricardo Lamas) would make sense?

Joanna Jedrzejczyk Says She Lost Because Of Botched Weight Cut

Joanna Jedrzejczyk claims her weight cut had adverse affects.

At UFC 217, Strawweight “Thug” Rose Namajunas achieved a spectacular first-round knockout over longtime champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Now Joanna is citing weight issues to explain the loss.

Joanna was undefeated in the UFC until the Rose fight, and although she often discussed moving up to 125, the depletion of cutting to 115 never obviously manifested in her fights. She routinely succeeded in 5-round wars, and seemed better conditioned than her opponents in the later rounds.

In a video interview with Przemys?aw Osiak of Przeglad Sportowy in Poland, Joanna explained the difficult weight cut preceding the loss.

Strength Wars Movie

According to Joanna, she was forced to cut 16 pounds in 14 hours. Translation comes via MMAFighting.

“It was an accident what happened. I know that I should have won the match, and I know that I could have won the match. … The people that I was working with led me to a critical state.

“I told my doctor I need to do whatever to weigh 115. I don’t care if I have to be in a tub with whatever temperature. It gets harder and harder as you get older to cut weight.”

The fiasco has prompted Joanna to part ways with Perfecting Athletes, her nutrition company.

“The mistakes that they made were unforgivable,” Jedrzejczyk said. … “I can’t work with those kinds of people.”

Some are calling this just an example of a fighter looking for someone to blame other than themselves after a loss. The claim that a faulty weight cut is entirely to blame for a first round KO is a bit hard to take. This also comes after Joanna’s bizarre assertion that she did not tap to strikes just before the stoppage, which she clearly did. But then again, perhaps she is right and what came through on the camera did not do her situation justice. In any case, she will have a chance to prove herself right, as she has been granted an immediate title shot and rematch with Rose.

BEEF! Video Of William Bonac Getting Into Confrontation With Luimarco

Can’t we all just get along?

It seems that bodybuilding feuds are a dime a dozen these days. While it’s not uncommon to see two or more individuals feuding in the community, there appears to be more and more pro bodybuilders that are focusing their attention on one specific individual: Luimarco.

Luimarco is an opinionated bodybuilding personality who calls it how he sees it and doesn’t shy away from expressing himself. As such, a number of bodybuilders he’s criticized in the past are starting to express their own thoughts on what they think about Luimarco himself. Phil Heath went social media immediately following his Olympia victory to confront Luimarco and his fan base and it appears that William Bonac is taking a page out of the reigning champions book.

William Bonac approached Luimarco while at the Dubai Muscle show this past weekend to confront the outspoken bodybuilding personality. The video below courtesy of Williams Fitness shows the incident.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOpSRC6Hl-M

While some are arguing the confrontation could have been handled in a more controlled manner, the truth is that sometimes tempers flare and these things happen. One thing is certain, while Luimarco is unafraid of speaking his mind, it’s clear that the bodybuilders who are the subject of his opinionated posts aren’t afraid to share their thoughts at any venue or online space.

What do you make of this confrontation between Luimarco and William Bonac?

Let us know in the comments below. Also, be sure to follow Generation Iron on Facebook and Twitter.
