WITH TONY FERGUSON’S INJURY SCRAPPING UFC ON FOX 19 MAIN EVENT, HOW CAN THINGS CHANGE?

ferguson injury headerTraining ideologies need to change.

With all the trash talk and bravado demonstrated between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, all signs were pointing to a truly epic main event at UFC on Fox 19. Then Ferguson had to go right ahead and get injured. It was already bad enough that Daniel Cormier had to pull from his UFC 197 main event against Jon Jones, now it seems UFC on Fox 19 has suffered the same fate. Ferguson’s injury scraps what was to be one of the biggest and perhaps most exciting grudge matches of the year. Though the stakes weren’t as high as with the Jon Jones/Daniel Cormier championship showdown, the Nurmagomedov vs Ferguson fight was to decide who would get the next crack at the Lightweight title. Both men talked enough trash in person and on social media to entice anyone who was paying attention. It makes Ferguson’s withdrawal all the more disappointing. But both Ferguson and Cormier’s recent withdrawals bring up a point that is constantly discussed about. Why does MMA training result in so many injuries? When you look at comparable combat sport like boxing there aren’t near as many injury withdrawals. The major difference between the two is that with boxing you’re only training one aspect of combat, while with MMA you’re training several. But despite that, boxers avoid injuries by training in a smart, calculated manner. You have to consider what kind of training these mixed martial artists are putting themselves through. There’s this notion that the only way to get prepared for a bout you must put yourself through hell, tax yourself both physically and mentally. Though that may be true to an extent, there are diminishing returns, something which Daniel Cormier and Tony Ferguson are having to deal with. Slugging in the gym or grappling to rip your training partner apart may have some merits in that it simulates live combat. But it does no favors on yours or your partner’s health. Fighters like Ben Henderson, Frankie Edgar, Conor Mcgregor, Lyoto Machida and Donald Cerrone have never had to withdraw from a bout and I have to think it’s because they train hard but do so smartly. Your punches don’t have to be full force, your wrestling and grappling can flow. There’s no reason to wreck your body before you even get into the cage. In the fight game your body is your most valuable commodity and if you want to last long in this sport then you’re going to have to find a way to prevent yourself from getting injured needlessly. With Tony Ferguson’s injury, who should Khabib Nurmagomedov fight? Follow Generation Iron MMA on Facebook and Twitter. Also, be sure to share, like, and comment to show your support.

WITH FERGUSON OUT – WHO’S GOING TO WIN THE KHABIB NURMAGOMEDOV LOTTERY?

Khabib

Winner winner chicken dinner

With all the recent injuries going on for main event cards, this should come as no surprise. Lightweight contender and rising Star Tony Ferguson has pulled out of UFC on FOX 19 due to fluid in his lungs.

With no love lost between these two the question that remains is who will take his place? With Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone currently at the top of the bidding war it looks like Rafael “Dos” Anjos will be might A@@ed  out. But who knows, with the UFC these days the unlikely pick is often the safest. Wouldn’t be surprised if they offered it to Conor Mcgregor – you think I’m joking…

What do I think? As far as big money fights, I’m going to have to go with cowboy. Though not a MAJOR needle mover, he’s the fan favorite, and with the spin of “another quick turnaround from wild cowboy cerrone” it’ll get some noggins. However, it’s rumored that Cowboy won’t take the fight unless he can still fight Patrick Cote on UFC Fight Night 89 on June 18th, which should be doable unless he sustains major injuries. If you’re looking at it from a fight fan point of view then it’s gotta be Rafael Dos Anjos. RDA wants his vengeance for his only recent loss in 4 years which came by the hands of “The Eagle” – judging by the way he’s been fighting recently he certainly deserves it.  The outcome could certainly be different seeing as Khabib Nurmagomedov’s long layoff and RDA’s rise to prominence has so perfectly coincided. I say they save this fight for a full promotion as they probably already had this in the cards a little further down the line. So if you’re forcing me to take a pick I’m going with cowboy…final answer. Keep in contact for the most late breaking news and honest opinions here, at MMagenerationiron.

Here’s How To Get Rid Of Belly Fat Fast

Narrow Waist Bodybuilder Generation Iron

Get cut faster than ever.

When most people think of a truly aesthetic physique there’s no doubt that the chief feature is a slim, tapered waist. Many bodybuilders focus on different muscle groups they want to build up, whether it’s the biceps, the chest, the back, the quads or calves. But despite all that, everyone wants to have a waist line that’s not only ripped but tiny as well. It’s what made classic bodybuilders so unique.

The bodybuilders of the Golden Era realized that having massive muscle is all well and good, but if it isn’t brought together with a small waist then the body can end up looking blocky and disproportional. The main culprit behind this square, boxy look in the torso is without a doubt due to bloating.

The body is made up of mostly water and because of this it craves to hold onto that water to keep the body functioning and firing on all cylinders. But when there is too much water in the body, otherwise known as water retention, the stomach can bloat and appear thicker than it actually is.

So how can we reduce this bloating around the waistline and build a slim, tapered midsection? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with a few simple and easy tricks that can see you losing that bloat in no time.

Drink More Water

Generation Iron Bodybuilding Water

Yeah, it may sound counter to the whole process, but drinking more water means you’ll be heading to the bathroom more often and flushing out excess fluids from the body. If your body is holding onto too much water then that waistline will pay the price. By flushing your body, it will reveal the muscles underneath all that bloat.

Reduce Sodium Intake

Generation Iron Bodybuilding sodium

If you’re looking to put that extra bit of salt on your chicken breast then think again. Increased sodium intake means that your body will want to hold onto more water. Salt may enhance flavor, but too much of a good thing may have your stomach paying the price.

More Fiber

Generation Iron Fiber

There’s a reason why they say fiber is good for you. It’s good for the heart and makes you go in order to flush out the waist in your body. But it also helps to blast stomach fat as well. It’s definitely a great tool in slimming down your midsection.

What are your problem areas?

SEE HOW ROMAN REIGNS TRAINS HARDCORE LIKE A BODYBUILDER

Generation Iron Roman Reigns

Generation Iron Roman Reigns

Lift heavy, lift hard.

WrestleMania 32 came to its conclusion late Sunday night after a nearly five-hour show that included plenty of surprises and a new World Heavyweight Champion as challenger Roman Reigns took down Triple H to win the title in the show’s main event.

But how did Roman Reigns (Real name: Joe Anoa’i) get to the biggest title of the biggest stage of sports entertainment? Sure he’s a family member of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, sure he’s a physical specimen, and sure he’s got charm (just ask your girl), but hard work beats talent unless talent works hard, and this guy works hard!

The video below is a chest and upper body workout with the 30 year old Samoan. What’s most surprising about this video is how killer his mindset is. He’s a level headed competitor whose obsessive dedication to body sculpting would give most builders a run for their money. The 6’3, 270lb wrestler like’s to lift heavy and fast, with an old school mindset ” I do squats, Olympic lifts, and heavy compound movements, I’m not the guy who’s going to be flipping a log 50 times, I have always trained for explosion and it shows in the ring.” Like any fitness freak, Joe’s in the mirror everyday to find lagging parts and then blats them to failure on his next workout.

He says he gets his hardnose training from playing defensive tackle at Georgia Tech and credits his family for his work ethic.

While the video below is from Wrestlemania’s past, the message stays the same. Work hard, lift heavy, and come back even better tomorrow. Check out the video below:

MOTIVATION: WATCH RASHID, WARREN, & JACKSON LIFT REAL HEAVY-ASS WEIGHT

Generation Iron Branch Warren Heavy Ass Weight

Generation Iron Branch Warren Heavy Ass Weight

Real men lift heavy weight.

Many people have different notions of how you should approach your bodybuilding training. There are some people who believe the best way to train is with lighter weight, great form, and high volume. But there are others who believe the best way to train is to lift heavy weight with only a few reps with great contractions. In reality the best way to train is however your body responds to whatever training methods you experiment with. But there are many pro bodybuilders and strength athletes that would rather lift heavy and gain explosive power and strength than simply lift to sculpt their muscles.

[wptouch target=”mobile”]

[/wptouch]
.

It’s hard to say which approach is more beneficial in the long run. If you train simply to sculpt muscle then the amount of weight that you lift should be of no consequence. Frank Zane was a believer of making the weight “feel” heavy by focusing on perfect form and a good squeeze. This allows you muscles to grow even if you aren’t hefting a tremendous amount of weight. On the other hand you have lifters like Branch Warren who are more inclined to lift heavy and really feel the weight, no pun intended, of the training he’s putting his body through. He trains closer to putting himself through a crucible than just simply looking for the pump.

But Branch Warren isn’t alone in his desired training methods. In fact, his training partner Johnnie Jackson shares his thought process of lifting heavy when he’s in the gym. When you team those two men up with Mike Rashid and Matt Lehr, then you’re sure to see four hardcore lifters hauling some heavy ass weight during their training sessions. Take a look at the video below as the four men train shoulders and show off their philosophy on how weight training should be.

Mass Monster Battle: Is Morgan Aste Bigger Than Big Ramy!?

Morgan Aste Generation Iron

Does The Big Rock trump Big Ramy?

Modern bodybuilding is about one thing above all else: building massive massive muscle. Ever since men like Sergio Oliva and Arnold Schwarzenegger became popular it’s what the sport has become all about. The competitors of the open weight class try and find new ways to not only put on massive muscle, but to be as large as humanly possible. Where Sergio and Arnold differed however was maintaining more aesthetic proportions instead of solely building up their body.

Reality is that bodybuilding has changed since the tried and true days of the Golden Era. In the current climate, size is weighed very heavily, no pun intended, and if you hope to stand out amongst a crowd of hulking beasts then you’re going to need to build a tremendous amount of muscle. Sure, Phil Heath isn’t the biggest competitor that competes in the open weight class, but he does have a great deal of size, more so than any of the athletes that competed in the earlier days of the sport.

But Heath is different than most pro bodybuilders. He’s a genetic freak with an unusually well proportioned physique. A complete rarity. Though he’s won four straight Olympia titles, it’s still men like Dorian Yates and Ronnie Coleman that most people think about as the definition of the modern era of mass monsters.

With the recent inclusion of Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay as a serious contender, it appears that size may yet rule the day. Big Ramy is perhaps the biggest bodybuilder that was on stage at the Olympia this year. From relevant unknown to potential title challenger, it’s the Egyptians massive size and definition that has garnered him much attention. But there looks to be another bodybuilder out there that may be even larger than the massive Big Ramy himself.

Morgan Aste is a French bodybuilder who has been making a name for himself as of late. Standing at 6’3” and weighing over 350 lbs during the “off season,” it seems that the man nicknamed “The Big Rock” could prove to be a future championship threat if he continues to progress. He might even be larger than Big Ramy – which is saying a lot. Take a look at the video below of this mass monster.

Do you think Morgam Aste has potential to go far? Let us know in the comments and forum. Also, be sure to follow Generation Iron on Facebook and Twitter.

JON JONES VS. DANIEL CORMIER: THE TWITTER BEEF GETS UGLY…REAL UGLY.

Twitter beef jj

And the vitriol spews

With news of Daniel Cormier having to pull out of the UFC 197 main event due to shin injury, most of the MMA world was in sad disappointment. With the animosity between these two reaching a boiling point, and Jon Jones finally getting a driver, we thought we were in for a real treat on April 23rd. When we  found out the news not only was there the initial disappointment but there was a further sigh when we found out close second Anthony “Rumble” Johnson couldn’t take the bout either. However, it seems that not being able to fight physical hasn’t stopped the verbal wars. A new batch of beef started yesterday when Ariel Helwani revealed to Jon Jones on the “MMA Hour” that Daniel Cormier offered to house and train his replacement Ovince St. Preux. Jon Jones quickly responded calling DC a “pussy” and taking to twitter shortly after with the same message.

As you can guess the beef didn’t stop there with things getting down right nasty on both ends.  While I love the current champ, unlike most people – I haven’t forgotten that he’s earned that strap via Anthony Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson, I don’t think arguing is his strong point. Not that he can’t keep up verbally, but I feel he gets more frazzled emotionally. I think Jon Jones stays more centered and clear headed throughout the storm. If I were DC I’d keep my head down and train. When I did respond, it would be short, to the point, and deadly. Leave it at that. But it seems DC can’t help but play the game. What I don’t understand is why more people aren’t calling out Anthony Johnson? According to Jon Jones himself the UFC called him saying Rumble had already accepted the fight. Jon spoke to his team and called back to accept the fight the next day. All of sudden Rumble had to undergo dental surgery and new opponent had to be found – Enter Ovince St. Preux. I don’t know about you, but that seems a bit odd. Either way the bad blood continues. We’ve got the whole twitter battle for you below.   Willing to train OSP and is willing to pay for his expenses? You are a sheep in wolves clothing and I see right through you. pussy. — Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) April 4, 2016

THE FLYWEIGHT WINNER OF TUF 24 GETS A TITLE SHOT…THE DIVISION IS IN TROUBLE

flyweight in trouble headerThe Flyweight division desperately needs some more exposure.

The Flyweight division is one of the most exciting divisions in the UFC. Yes, I said it, ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING DIVISIONS! But many casual and hardcore MMA fans may disagree with that statement. Many people are looking for the big knockout, the devastating submission, the bloody wars. The Flyweight division however doesn’t feature a great ton of any of that. Why? Because the lower the weight class, the more technical ability comes into play. That last fact leaves me salivating. Technique is the absolute most important thing in martial arts. Without it we might as well be watching two drunkards brawl it out in a bar and call it entertainment. Flyweight fighters are usually going to find themselves up against bigger men in the gym which means they can’t rely on strength to better their opponent, but technique. Because of that fact, and the fact that Flyweights in the UFC are incredibly technical, most fights will go to decision, much to the ire of many MMA fans looking for a definitive finish. The fighters in the UFC Flyweight division may be extremely talented, but it’s far from being the deepest division in the organization. Enter The Ultimate Fighter. On the 24th season of the tournament based series, Flyweights will be featured. The winner of the season will awarded a six figure contract as usual, but this time the UFC is taking a page out an old playbook and employing the format they once used in season 4 of the long running show. The winner will also receive a Flyweight title shot. Now, while the stakes may bring a level of increased interest for the winner, it does highlight a bit of an issue. The Flyweight division is starving for talent and the fact that the TUF format is being used to suss out any fighters they can proves that the division is in trouble. That doesn’t mean the division will be removed, but it does highlight the fact that if more talent isn’t added to the division that fans may grow bored and potentially lose interest in Flyweights all together. All that being said, this is perhaps the best move the UFC could have possibly made and will provide audiences with some fresh faces needed in a stagnant division, all of it on national television. Only time will tell if this format will generate more interest in the Flyweight division, but I for one will be looking forward to proceedings. Are you a fan of the Flyweight division?
