UFC 242 Analysis: What’s Next For Khabib Nurmagomedov?

Khabib Nurmagomedov once again displayed his dominance.

If you didn’t understand before Saturday, Khabib Nurmagomedov made it painfully clear that he’s the king of the UFC lightweight division. While we were all hoping for a back and forth war between the champion and the former interim champion Dustin Poirier, Khabib had other plans as he dominated the fight from the opening bell.

While Poirier was game and tried his best to land offense on Khabib, the champion’s wrestling proved to be too much for the former interim champion to handle.

How Khabib Got The Job Done

If you’re wondering how Khabib Nurmagomedov was able to defeat Dustin Poirier and just want some general insight on the fights that took place at UFC 242, then take a listen to my latest podcast for the details.

With another dominant win in the books for Khabib Nurmagomedov, the only question remaining is where does he go from here?

Potential Fight 1: Tony Ferguson

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson have some unfinished business. Scheduled to fight one thousand times (could be off by by several hundred) these two have been waiting to lock horns for years now, yet there’s always been some kind of snag to prevent this match from happening.

Is this fight just too good for the universe to allow it to happen? I’m thinking that’s a resounding no. The universe has bigger fish to fry than keeping MMA fans from watching what is sure to be a chaotic and entertaining scrap.

This fight certainly needs to happen for both men’s legacies and for all the fans starving for this bout to finally go down.

Potential Fight: Georges St-Pierre

Another intriguing match up that Khabib Nurmagomedov has his eyes on is a potential legacy fight against former UFC Welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre. The Montreal native has retired from the sport once again after winning the UFC Middleweight championship back in November 2017 at UFC 217.

But the former Welterweight and Middleweight champion has flirted with the idea of doing battle with Khabib in the past, so don’t be too surprised if GSP decides to make a return to action to further cement his legacy as the greatest mixed martial artist of all-time. Khabib himself believes that he deserves the title and wants to prove it by defeating GSP. We’ll just have to wait and see if things materialize.

Potential Fight 3: Conor McGregor

Anyone saying that they wouldn’t be interested in watching these two throw down again is just kidding themselves. The drama from the first match is still fresh in everyone’s minds and Conor McGregor is desperate to prove that he can beat his arch-nemesis.

There’s only one problem: Khabib isn’t interested.

From the perspective of Khabib Nurmagomedov it makes complete sense not to grant Conor McGregor a rematch. After all, he essentially dominated McGregor in their first match. For Khabib he has nothing else to prove and because he’s not hungry for more money, the champion is likely to deny Conor McGregor and choose retirement over a rematch just to rub it in a little bit more.

Who do you think Khabib Nurmagomedov should fight next?
