Jeff Cavaliere Urges To Avoid 3 Sets, 12 Reps Training Approach When Trying To Build Muscle

Jeff Cavaliere discussed the most effective strategies used to build muscle.

Fitness coach Jeff Cavaliere has created a presence on social media where he can share his best advice to viewers. Recently, he explained how gym goers should avoid deferring to the typical three-set, 12-rep training plan while weightlifting.

“Stop letting sets and reps be the guiding factor. It’s a big mistake when it’s all about sets and reps first.”

Jeff Cavaliere, a physical therapist and strength and conditioning coach, founded the Athlean-X brand aimed at helping people improve their overall fitness. He often shares exercises that build strength and size in specific muscle groups. And regularly tells us his favorites and why he picks them.

Cavaliere believes that you must know your body before determining what rep and set range to hit in the gym.

Jeff Cavaliere: “It Doesn’t Necessarily Have To Be Specific”

If you do not know how to start, Jeff Cavaliere suggests one set because there is a place to go from there.

“If one didn’t work, you know where to go. You go to two or you go to three or maybe four, but you don’t know. If you start at eight sets and you’re not really getting the results, do you go up to nine or down to seven? Do you go down to six? Do you go down to five or do you go up to 12?”

Cavaliere continued to discuss what the right range of repetitions might look like for you. No matter what the answer might be, each athlete must have the same approach when working out.

“It doesn’t necessarily have to be in a specific range. 8-12 for hypertrophy or 3-5 for strength. Look, those seeking hypertrophy, you can do it at many different rep ranges. As a matter of fact, you could do it all the way up to 25 repetitions, 30 repetitions but guess what’s needed there, you need to be able to deliver that balls-out-to-failure approach to training.”

Overall, quality and form remains the most important thing while working out in the gym and Cavaliere is an advocate of this.

“How we do our repetitions, not just how many repetitions and how many sets, but what about the consideration to how you’re doing your repetitions.”
