Even the best have to overcome adversity to achieve greatness.

A lot of people point to genetics as being the number one reason for creating champions in bodybuilding. When you look at a great champion like Phil Heath, more often than not one thought that comes to mind is that the man was blessed with some above average genetics, hence the reason his nickname was “The Gift”. The fact that he competed in basketball at a pretty high level is testament to the fact that the man is a well rounded athlete. Those same genetics have brought him seven Mr. Olympia titles, and solidified him as one of the best bodybuilders to step on stage. But it brings about the question: is it possible to be a champion without having the best genetics?

Let’s take a look at the effects that genetics have on bodybuilders, and in particular, the genetics of the Austrian Oak.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Genetics

arnold schwarzenegger genetics

When you hear the name Arnold Schwarzenegger, many things come to mind; Mr. Olympia champion, multimillion dollar film star, politician, and the Godfather of bodybuilding. But I bet if you ask enough people you’d likely never hear the words “bad genetics” associated with the Austrian. Well don’t get us wrong, Arnold does have some pretty great genetics in his own right, showing off a shelf like chest, peaked biceps, and an incredible wingspan (wide lats). However, if you take a closer look you’ll see that the man possessed below average leg size and definition compared to his upper body, particularly in this calves. The Austrian Oak had to work tirelessly at building up the muscle group to its championship level stature.

But don’t just take our word for it. There’s someone else who shares our opinion on the subject. Check it out.

Genetics Don’t Define You

Arnold may have not had the best genetics, but despite that he pushed himself to the limit in order to overcome his shortcomings and become an all time bodybuilding legend. Don’t let Genetics be an excuse to not push yourself to the heights of glory.

You are able to outperform your own genetics, with a proper diet and training regimen, you can build fantastic amounts of muscle mass, or burn fat and get shredded, it is all in your own hands. The problem is that many people do not want to put in that hard work, and say that “they can’t” or “don’t have the genetics” for something, before they even try.

Do not be that person who blames their genetics for the shortcomings in their physique, be the person that outworks everyone else and sculpts something truly great. Genetics can certainly put someone at an advantage or disadvantage, but that does not mean you cannot surpass them with hard work.

Wrap Up

So what do you think? Do you need great genetics to be a bodybuilding champion? Did Arnold Schwarzenegger have bad genetics? Let us know in the comments below be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Mike Israetel is not impressed by this Mark Wahlberg training program.

Doctor Mike Israetel recently critiqued the workout of actor Mark Wahlberg. An exercise scientist and professor, Israetel is also an accomplished bodybuilder with a wealth of experience and knowledge. The good doctor is using this acquired knowledge to deconstruct the training program of Wahlberg.

An NPC bodybuilder, Mike Israetel has spent a large portion of his life learning how to improve physical strength and aesthetics. So it’s safe to say that the good doctor knows what he’s talking about when he reviews training programs. Having already transformed his own physique, Israetel is a prime example of someone who walks to walk.

The Wahlberg Workout

In a recent YouTube videos, Mike Israetel took on the challenge of critiquing Mark Wahlberg, and his training routine. Israetel came to several conclusions, most of which were not positive.

“You get out what you put in and you have to be disciplined you have to want it and you know put in the time,” said Mark Wahlberg at the beginning of his training video.

Mike Israetel agrees with this statement and mindset. However, he’s not handing out extra points. He acknowledges this is the basic understanding of what it takes to improve your health and fitness.

The video quickly shifts to Mark Wahlberg doing what appears to be a cable chest exercise with some very fast and explosive movement. Mike Israetel is having none of it.

“what the f**k is Marky Mark doing in there,” says Israetel. “Ultrafast focused on the concentric reps. these are not good reps folks. you want to go down slower maybe even pause at the bottom and come up quickly. D plus.”

The Problem: The Trainer

Fast forward to another portion of the training video and Mike Israetel starts to lose it. Not on Mark Wahlberg, no. Israetel’s upset is focused on Wahlberg’s trainer. Wahlberg walks around with a 70-pound kettlebell, likely trying to replicate the farmer’s carry, while his trainer just looks on without giving much instruction. Israetel believes Wahlberg’s trainer is doing him a massive disservice.

”This is the laziest training I’ve ever seen, not from Mark’s perspective, he’s working hard,” said Israetel. “the coach is just standing around watching him walk around and do nonsense. hey coach get in there and Coach a real Movement Like a pull-up or a row or a bench press or a curl or a squat, actually get your client the best most efficient results. stop just watching them walk around on pointless patterns, pointlessly, for no point at all!

“This comes very close to being just random ways to do work. like you ran out of good ideas as a trainer and you’re just like ‘hey like just uh just walk around or move around just do this it’ll be great’ and Mark’s like sweating and tired he’s like, ‘oh this must be great.’ He’s being ripped off.”

The Verdict

So it seems Mike Israetel isn’t so much critiquing Mark Wahlberg himself. Rather Israetel is criticizes Wahlberg’s trainer. He believes the actor should be put through exercises that will increase strength markers as well as improve his physique.

Jeff Seid is looking extremely lean these days.

Jeff Seid recently revealed a physique update on his Instagram page that has the bodybuilding community talking as the popular influencer looks extremely downsized. Known for having a densely muscled physique, Seid has gained a great deal of attention in the fitness space. But his most recent update has created a large amount of speculation.

One of the most popular bodybuilding influencers in the world today, Jeff Seid has amassed a massive following because of his impressive physique. Ever since bursting onto the scene in his late teens, Seid has garnered a great deal of attention in the bodybuilding world. Having competed at the highest levels of the sport on several occasions, there is no questioning Seid’s ability.

Jeff Seid made a name for himself in the Men’s Physique division. While he never cracked the top five in the world, Seid always showcased a great physique that has been the envy of many. But after competing at the 2016 Olympia, Seid walked away from competition and has since continued to build his brand. With nearly five million followers on Instagram alone, Seid has cemented himself as one of the top fitness influencers in the world.

Downsized

At this stage in his career, Jeff Seid has become well-known for his densely muscled physique. It’s what garnered him a massive amount of attention over the years. But in one of his most recent physique updates, we can see that there’s been a change in his physical form.

In his latest update, Jeff Seid is looking much smaller than usual. His muscles don’t look nearly as full as many have become accustomed to seeing. to put it plainly, Seid looks downsized.

This could be due to many reasons. Some have speculated that Jeff Seid is no longer using gear (performance-enhancing drugs). While he never was on the record stating that he used extra help to gain muscle, many have often speculated. Another simple reason could be that he simply made a lifestyle change. Last year Seid had stated he was eating 5,000 calories a day on his bulk. Perhaps now he has significantly dropped his calories on his latest cut.

Whatever the reason, you can see that there’s been a change to the physique of Jeff Seid. See below and judge for yourself.

One paper cut and it’s all over

Until further notice, we will all have to speculate as to what’s going on with Seid’s physique. If the caption is any indication, it does seem that Seid is simply on a cut, though we’ve never seen him look this lean before.

What do you think of the downsized physique of Jeff Seid?

Ronnie Coleman reacts to Sam Sulek and his training routine.

Eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman recently weighed in on Sam Sulek and whether he thinks he’s natural or not. Coleman has the kind of invaluable experience and knowledge many bodybuilders can only dream of. Lately he’s been using his expertise to diagnose several athletes and celebrities and give his opinion on their “natural” status. Sulek is the latest in a long line of lifters to be critiqued.

Considered by many to be the greatest bodybuilder of all time, Ronnie Coleman is a living legend. His methods of training have become equally legendary and helped to turn him into one of the most massive professional bodybuilders to ever live. In his heyday, he was a force to be reckoned with. His massive size and incredible definition made him a bodybuilder that few could keep up with. To this day there hasn’t been a bodybuilder quite like Coleman.

Starting as a gymnast in his younger years, Sam Sulek now spends most days building his physique through weight training. The 21-year-old bodybuilder has the kind of potential to build a truly unimaginable physique. With such a well-built physical form at such a young age, should Sulek continue to progress there’s no telling how far he can push his body.

Training Reaction

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Ronnie Coleman took a look at the training routine of Sam Sulek. From the looks of things, Coleman was quite impressed with the young bodybuilder throughout the workout. Sulek does the necessary cardio and when he lifts, he lifts heavy.

“Yeah, buddy! Here we go. Another jacked kid coming up. My man is jacked up y’all. Let’s go, Sam. Show me something.

“Alright. Working them triceps. Lookin good Sam. Lookin good there buddy. Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about!”

Ronnie Coleman seemed impressed with the young Sam Sulek throughout the video. But eventually, the question arises. The question that everyone eventually wonders about. Is Sam Sulek all-natural?

Is Sulek Natty or Not?

After seeing his training routine and getting a good look at his physique Ronnie Coleman gave his assessment on whether he believed the young bodybuilder was all natural or using gear. Coleman’s reaction was unwavering.

“Oh, come on now! There ain’t nothing natural about him except for the hat he got on.”

That said, Ronnie Coleman encouraged the young Sam Sulek to get in contact for some possible training.

“Let’s see about me and you getting together and having a meal and maybe a workout. Hit your boy big Ron up and let’s do this. Yeah, buddy!”

Ronnie Coleman weighs in on whether he thinks The Rock and other celebrities are natty or not.

Eight-time Mr. Olympia, Ronnie Coleman recently spoke on whether or not he believes Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and several other actors and athletes are natural or not. According to the eye test, Coleman is doubtful that The Rock is one hundred percent natural.

In a recent YouTube interview, Ronnie Coleman was faced with some tough questions to answer. Not because of the potential moral quandary he faced, but because he had to speculate on whether or not he believed several actors and athletes were natural or on performance-enhancing drugs. With decades of bodybuilding and lifting experience under his belt, Coleman gave his educated opinions on whether several high-profile actors and athletes were using PEDs.

Perhaps the actor with the highest profile on the list was The Rock whose fame and accolades have reached a whole new height. Getting his start in professional wrestling, The Rock has always been a physical force. But since walking away as a full-time pro wrestler, something had changed about the “People’s Champion”. The Rock has seen his physique go from good to great. He is more shredded and massive than he was during his WWE tenure. He’s in such great shape that many have wondered how he would fare in a bodybuilding competition.

Natty or Not

When faced with the question of whether he believed The Rock made his incredible gains using natural methods, Ronnie Coleman sounded as if he wasn’t totally convinced.

“Oh yeah [I can tell if someone is enhanced or not] for sure,” said Ronnie Coleman.

With that declaration, Ronnie Coleman began to give his honest thoughts on whether he believed The Rock was Natty or Not.

“Yeah. Yeah. He probably took a little bit of something here and there, not a lot you know,” said Coleman. “He’s all kind of cut up a little bit.

“The definition is everywhere on his body. I could be wrong but you know… it’s very unlikely [that he’s natural].”

While Ronnie Coleman may believe The Rock isn’t entirely natural, the truth is that it requires a ton of hard work to get in the shape the popular actor is in. For more analysis on who Coleman thinks is natural or not, take a look at the full interview here.

Martins Licis has become a sumo wrestler!

2019 World’s Strongest Man Martins Licis recently went through the process of training and living like a sumo wrestler. The strongman has been on a journey of strength in the past few years. Rather than solely compete in strongman competition, Licis has been exploring other methods of building strength and competing.

Sumo wrestling spawned 2,000 years ago as a Japanese Shinto religious ritual. Fast forward to today and many in the West view Sumo as just two massive men trying to push each other out of the circle. The ritual originally was meant to “entertain the divine” and the winner would be given a harvest as winnings. As Japan modernized so did sumo which would eventually become a sport. Now Martins Licis is looking to try his hand at authentic Sumo training.

Like many other strongman competitors, Martins Licis is constantly looking for different ways to test and improve his strength. As such, Licis has been embarking on a journey of strength. He has been traveling across the globe, seeking out different methods of training for strength as well as competing in various sports along the way. His journey finally found him traveling to the Far East to test his metal in the ancient Japanese tradition of sumo.

Journey to the Far East

Tsukuba, Japan. Martins Licis has traveled to the Ibaraki Prefecture to train with some of the best sumo wrestlers in the world. The Tatsunami stable houses 20 Sumo wrestlers all living and training in the lifestyle. Licis hopes to get the authentic experience of embodying the Sumo traditions.

I’ve been itching to try this for WAY TOO LONG, and it finally happened! Sumo wrestling at the Tatsunami stable in Japan was an eye-opening experience I’ll never forget. The level of athleticism and focus in the stable was phenomenal. The traditions and movements, beautiful. The lifestyle, unforgiving, merciless and incredibly rewarding. Tune in Tomorrow at 10AM PST , and join us in this, one of a kind, deep dive into the world of Rikishi on my YT channel.

Unofficial World Record

In a recent training session, Inderraj Singh-Dhillon hit yet another epic milestone in his deadlift journey. Inderraj has now unofficially crushed his own world record. The talented powerlifter pulled an incredible 871-pound deadlift.

Vegan bodybuilder Alfredo Martin has passed away.

Popular vegan bodybuilder Alfredo Martin recently passed away from mysterious circumstances leaving his family and friends devastated. Martin’s girlfriend, Vera Schroeder broke the news of his passing on social media. Martin is another in a long list of bodybuilders who have been passing away at very young age recently.

A YouTuber and Instagram influencer, Alfredo Martin was an outspoken bodybuilder with a focus on gaining muscle mass and shedding fat all while being on a vegan diet. His Instagram page Heroe Fitness was filled with a ton of information and progress pics that motivated his loyal followers. He informed his fans and followers on different methods of gaining muscle and creating their ideal physique. At times controversial with his approach, but nonetheless his message and mission was clear. He tried to help people reach their physical best through bodybuilding. Passing away at the age of 30 has left everyone in his community shocked and devastated.

A post shared by Héroe Fitness (@heroefitness)

Currently, no cause of death has been reported. Many are speculating that the cause of death is related to the usage of PEDs. Alfredo Martin was open and honest about utilizing PEDs to help enhance his physique. But with no real cause of death, all of this is speculation.

Those Left Behind

Vera Schroeder, the girlfriend of Alfredo Martin, took to social media to express her grief over the loss of her partner. She had this to say about the passing of Martin.

I don’t know what it means to hit rock bottom because no one so close to me has ever died, but I’m discovering that what comes after the loss is much worse…the return to an empty home, the lack of response when I say I love you in loud voice, the longing for your caresses, your smile, serious but loving, your warmth, your hug, your kisses, all the everyday things we did together, waking up in an empty house that was once shared, closing the room in the that we spend most of the time because I can’t stand being in it because it’s too painful and I keep imagining you there, the inability to sleep in the bed because we shared it and now I “sleep” on the couch.

Well, sleep, I don’t sleep. The change in the routine of my day and my weeks, the wait for my phone to turn on with a message from you, passing by all the usual places we went to.

All the broken plans and the promises of things I always wanted to do with you or do for you that can never be fulfilled, all the things you see and I say to myself: I bet you would love this and he “want” to tell you about it or surprise you with it and the sudden realization that I can’t, and the million other minor details that are now missing from my life after losing you.

All things are almost worse than death itself. Nothing can ever fill that place…and it never will…can you die of heartbreak? I could almost wish so.

I love you, wherever you are. ♥
