NYC Marathon Has Been Canceled

The TCS New York City Marathon has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event organizer, The New York Road Runner (NYRR) and the Mayor’s Office of the City of New York, collectively made the decision to cancel the world’s largest marathon due to coronavirus-related health and safety concerns for spectators, volunteers, staff, and runners.

“Canceling this year’s TCS New York City Marathon is incredibly disappointing for everyone involved, but it was clearly the course we needed to follow from a health and safety perspective,” said Michael Capiraso, president and CEO of New York Road Runners.

By July 15th, the NYRR will be reaching out to runners that were registered so that they can have more information regarding cancellation resolution details, including the options to either receive the full refund or guaranteed complimentary entry for2021, 2022, or 2023. For the runners who gained entry through charity or a tour operator, they should reach out to that organization by July 1st for more options available to them.

The 2020 marathon was set to be the 50th running of the event, which began in 1970. This marathon has grown to be the world’s largest marathon with 53,640 finishers in 2019.

The runners that were registered, will be invited to participated in the third annual TCS New York City Marathon – Virtual 26.2M that will be taking place from October 17 through November 1. More details on this will be shared at some point in July.

The 50th running of the TCS New York City Marathon will now take place on November 7, 2021.
