5 Best Fruits For Athletes

Fresh fruit stand with boysenberries, raspberries, cherries and grapes

A lot of emphasis is put on protein in the bodybuilding world but athletes of all kinds should not overlook the multifaceted benefits of fruits. Below is a list of fruits that are particularly useful for athletes before and after a workout.

1) Blueberries

A few days back we discussed the benefits of antioxidants in combating the free radicals that wreak havoc in the body following a workout. When it comes to antioxidants in fruits, blueberries can’t be beaten. These sweet berries are packed with antioxidants and have remarkable anti-inflammatory effects.

2) Bananas

Potassium is an essential component in any athlete’s diet. A potassium deficiency can lead to cramping and weakened muscles. Potassium also promotes strong cardiovascular health. So after a workout, refuel your body with a banana (they blend very well in smoothies and protein shakes), an excellent source of potassium. Bananas are also a good source of carbohydrates that will give you the energy you need to keep pushing yourself.

3) Acai Berries

You might not be able to find acai berries at your local farmer’s market or on supermarket shelves (which is okay, since acai berries are actually difficult to eat in their raw form) but a smoothie made from acai berry pulp is another amazing source of antioxidants.

4) Oranges

In order to repair your muscles and recover after a tough workout, your body needs Vitamin C. Oranges or orange juice will give your body plenty of Vitamin C in addition to carbohydrates that will reduce your risk of dehydrating during your workouts.

5) Strawberries

Oranges tend to steal the spotlight when it comes to Vitamin C but strawberries have loads of Vitamin C as well. They are also a great source of fiber, which will help you maintain your energy throughout the day.

The next time you blend yourself a smoothie, be sure to throw in some of the above fruits to ensure you pack the biggest nutritional punch possible!

3 POST-WORKOUT VITAMINS YOU NEED

So you’ve finished your workout. Time to reach for the supplements or make yourself a shake, right? Before you do that, check and make sure you’re getting some or all of these essential vitamins that are crucial to promoting good health and your body’s recovery after a workout.

VITAMIN C

Everyone knows that Vitamin C boosts your immune system, but this essential vitamin does a lot more. Vitamin C also improves the body’s iron absorption abilities, allowing the body to repair damaged tissues and recover more quickly after a workout.

Where to Get It: Citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables. (Try blending a few of those leafy vegetables into your next smoothie or shake. You’ll get all the nutrients out of them and barely notice the taste!)

VITAMIN D

Vitamin D increases the flow of calcium in your body’s bloodstream, which leads to a number of nutritional benefits including stronger bones. Vitamin D has also been shown to help relieve athletes suffering from muscle pain.

Where to Get It: Dairy products such as milk, yogurt and eggs.

VITAMIN E

How do you reduce your recovery time while also maximizing your muscle gains following a workout? The answer is Vitamin E. After a workout, your body is particularly vulnerable to free radicals (a specific kind of damaged cell that can cause mayhem in the body by damaging other cells). The best way to combat free radicals is with an antioxidant such as Vitamin E.

Where to Get It: Vegetables such as spinach and broccoli have plenty, but shellfish, including shrimp, can be another good source.

THE GI 2014 WINTER COLLECTION: A CLOSER LOOK

We’re in the thick of winter and some parts of the world have been experiencing record low temperatures. But members of the GI Nation know that nothing – certainly not just a few cold days and a couple of snowstorms – can stop them from working hard.

When you’re out jogging this winter or skiing down the slopes, you’ll need to stay warm so that you can keep pushing yourself – even in below freezing temperatures. Here’s a head-to-toe guide of the GI 2014 Winter Collection that can help you do just that.

GI BEANIE HAT

This snug and comfortable hat is a must-own for the winter. Keeping your head warm in cold weather is crucial to keeping the rest of your body warm and staying healthy. This beanie hat also features the stylish GI logo so you can show off to all your friends that you’re a member of the GI Nation.

GI CREWNECK SWEATER

The black GI Crewneck Sweater features a gold, college-styled GI crest on the chest. It’s the perfect way to stay warm without sacrificing style.

GI HOODIE

Whether you’re trekking across your local gym’s parking lot in a snowstorm, out shoveling your driveway or just need a little extra warmth lounging around the house, the GI Hoodie is your go-to. Available in black and charcoal, this pullover sweatshirt is being offered at an unbeatable price.

GI SWEATPANTS

A good pair of sweatpants is an essential piece of winter apparel for anyone venturing out into the cold. Throw them on underneath your snow pants or, since the GI sweatpants have been branded with the GI logo, wear them proudly and show everyone what you represent.
