Bodybuilder Fights Through Muscle Tear To Win Competition

Fighting through the pain to seek victory.

This week, Dane McGregor, 29, won his Muscle Model class at the Physical Culture Association (PCA) bodybuilding competition in Britain.

Dane took up bodybuilding after a serious knee injury forced him out of amateur rugby. He trains at the Body Academy gym on South William Street in Hull, and told The Courier he was thrilled with the win.

“I have been bodybuilding for about five years now, but last weekend’s competition was the first time I had competed in the muscle model category…There were around 160 competitors from across the UK at the show in Hull.”

Dane actually tore a muscle in his leg during the competition. He said he was able to push through the pain and still present his great package on stage.

His prearation is fairly rigorous. He practices an extremely strict diet featuring the staples of chicken and sweet potato- though he only trains four days a week.

“I’m not allowed any variation on the diet, which means definitely no cheat meals. Training really is the best part about bodybuilding. I am not a huge fan of the competition itself, but it teaches you so much about self-discipline and helps improve your work ethic.”

He says competing really adds intensity and purpose to the training that most bodybuilders know and love.

“I would really like to thank my coaches, Guy Adison and Vicky McCann for their support and help in preparing for the UK competition.”

Dane plans to pursue his local success and attempt to qualify for national competition.

“I’m next competing for a classic competition, with the national qualifiers taking place shortly.”

Highlights from the PCA contest can be found HERE.

Jacare Souza At Peace With His Career: “The Day Things Start Getting Tough, I’ll Stop”

Jacare Souza is at peace.

Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza, 38, has enjoyed one hell of a career, but lately it has been anything but smooth. Last April, the Middleweight contender suffered a torn pec, and shortly after an infected appendix which ended up bursting. In January, he returned to KO Derek Brunson in a cathartic win and now feels he is ready to end his career on top.

“When I’m happy, no one can beat me. So in two fights, I’ll be Middleweight champion of the UFC,” he told MMAJunkie. “It’s just confidence.”

He said that despite some considerations of retirement during his time off, he has complete confidence in his decision to return and take one last crack at the title.

“I don’t really have this problem with the idea of stopping because I don’t want to risk my health. I’d thought about stopping before because I thought maybe I couldn’t fight at a high level anymore. That’s was what made me think about that. The day things start getting tough, I’ll stop.”

Souza’s next bout will be in two weeks. A May 12th co-headliner at UFC 224 against Kelvin Gastelum in Jacare Souza’s home country of Brazil. He has since relocated for his family and training, and is happy with the change.

“Wherever you throw me, I can handle myself. I left home at 15, so adjusting to new places isn’t that hard. But I’m happy because my family is doing well. They’re doing well. I’m doing well. I found a good place to train, with good people to help me. Good coaches, good training partners, so it’s all been going very well.”

Gastelum is considered the new breed of talent. Jacare admits Gastelum and his breed represent the future of fighting, but believes he himself still represents the present.

“That’s the natural order of things: You leave, and younger people come in. That’s just how life is and I see no problem with that. I just have the conviction and certainty that I can still fight at a high level and that I can still be champion.”

Bodybuilder Trains To Become Himalayan Marathon Runner

From bodybuilder to marathon runner.

Men’s Fitness cover model Shaun Stafford has exchanged his bodybuilding training for endurance running this year in an bid to complete the Everest Marathon, raising money for Himalayan Children’s Charities.

He told Coach Magazine that the experience has seated him the belief that every specialized athlete should diversify their training regimen.

“I think the more well-rounded you are the more chance of longevity you have. If you focus on a niche you become quite one-dimensional. The guys who will be fitter for longer periods are masters of all trades. They can go for a 10K, do some light gymnastic stuff and pick up some weights. Having a base of all-round fitness is brilliant.”

He said the new workouts have really given him a comparative appreciation for what bodybuilding training is.

He said compared to distance running, bodybuilding workouts are a sprint- short and intense. The game is: Get in, give everything, get out.

“Some of these longer runs I’ve been doing have been three, three-and-a-half hours long, and it’s absolutely brutal – exhausting mentally and physically. That’s been eye-opening.”

He said the new training and diet has definitely taken a toll on his physique. He’s not particularly worried about it because he is mentally prepared, and it’s for a good cause, but it is unusual not to use his body as a visual measurement of progress.

“Once I’ve done the marathon I’ll go back to eating a different way and training in a way I’ve always enjoyed, and my body will re-adapt. But when you look in a mirror.”

“Actually it’s worse when you catch up with friends who haven’t seen you in a while and they’re like, ‘mate, you’re half the size!’”

Through injuries and pain, we wish Shaun the best in his endurance endeavors.

Hospital Worker Becomes Bodybuilder, Loses 98 Lbs (40% Body Fat) And Gets Shredded

From flab to fit.

Kiran Bassan once weighed over 266 pounds. He told Birmingham Live that eating junk food at university first caused the crisis. He’d think nothing of downing a six-pack of doughnuts any time of day or night.

“I didn’t like what was staring back at me when I looked in the mirror. I’d avoid looking at myself. I had a lack of self-confidence and would avoid talking to the opposite sex. I also felt tired all the time.”

Now a physiotherapist, Kiran said he did make several unsuccessful attempts to slim down.

“At my heaviest I was 19 stone. When I came back home to live with my mum in Birmingham, she would make sure I had healthy meals, but it was all the snacks in between that didn’t help.”

Eventually, Kiran knew he needed a desperate measure.

“I found a bodybuilding coach called Scott Walay on Instagram and messaged him for help. At that point I just wanted to lose weight. But he said he could help me sort out my diet and exercise. After a few weeks on his plan, I went along to see him in a competition. I watched him on stage and was in awe of him.”

Kiran had already dropped junk food and cut out snacks from his diet. But attending the contest inspired him to take it to the next level.

“I thought to myself that is what I want to do, I want to achieve what he has. So afterwards, I asked if he thought it was possible and he said it was. I stuck to it religiously and in around September last year, Scott told me I was ready for my first competition. I couldn’t believe it and was really excited to finally be at that stage.”

On April 8, Kiran took third at the Saxon Classic Bodybuilding Competition, which was held at the Lichfield Garrick Theatre.

“It was the most incredible feeling when I was on stage. I had the biggest smile on my face and I was just concentrating on impressing the judges. I could hear everyone just screaming my name – it was mad.”
