UFC 217: Georges St-Pierre Won. Does This Make Him The Greatest Of All Time?

Georges St-Pierre UFC 217 Generation Iron

GSP won UFC 217 and maybe a place forever in MMA history.

Georges St. Pierre returned from a four-year layoff to choke out Michael Bisping to win the middleweight championship in the main event of UFC 217.

For many this fight signified the final nail on George’s St-Pierre’s legacy – would he return to remind the world why he is the greatest… or return only to lose and tarnish his good name. The fight did not disappoint and many are throwing out superlatives already.

Regardless of the details. For now we can claim that this is another win for the MMA legend. And a win is better than a loss. Does this make him the best? For the people who already stood behind him – surely it does. For the non believers, this might not change much in the long run. But a win is surely less embarrassing than a loss.

Sheriff’s Deputy Uses Bodybuilding to Recover From Near-Fatal Crash

Bodybuilding Cop After Fatal Crash Generation Iron

Bodybuilding saving lives.

Bexar County Sheriff’s deputy Joaquin Galvan suffered a near-fatal crash while on-duty on July 31, 2016.

He took a call for a white Ford Mustang driving recklessly on the city’s Northeast Side, spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it. But the Mustang sped off, and that’s when he began the pursuit.

“I guess a vehicle came out in front of my suspect’s vehicle. He crashed into that vehicle and vehicle; he pushed that vehicle into me,” Galvan told KSAT.

“I don’t know how I survived, and I was extremely lucky. Extremely, extremely lucky, and I really had an angel over me that day to (be able to) say I’m still here to say I survived that accident,” he said.

Responding deputies found Galvan unresponsive with life-threatening injuries in his smashed patrol unit and quickly rushed him to the nearest hospital.

“I broke my ankle in half. I broke my femur in half. I cracked my pelvis in two spots to the left of my pelvis. I broke my forearm in half,” Galvan said. “But I had a traumatic brain injury, too. They said I had a brain bleed, and I was in ICU (intensive care unit) for a couple of days.”

Galvan said the accident left him temporarily paralyzed and forced him to learn how to walk again.

Deputies said they found marijuana in the car after two teenagers fled the scene. They were quickly caught moments after Galvan’s accident.

Galvan, an aspiring bodybuilder, has been blogging throughout his recovery process on his Instagram page as motivation to get back on patrol and continue his SWAT team duties.

“I’m not going to let everything go. I’m exactly where I want to be,” he said. “I’m in a great department, I’m in the SWAT team. That’s why I trained so hard, and everything I needed to do for my rehab, I did it beyond what I needed to do.”

After weeks of immobile recovery, Galvan said he was tired of being hopeless and decided it was time to go back to the gym.

“Once I was able to walk around easily, getting around on crutches, I was like, ‘You know what man, I’m going to go the gym and I’ll work out my right side or try doing something.’ I started from resistance bands, to (lifting) 2 pounds, then 5 pounds, to 10 pounds, and little by little as time went on I started increasing my strength, my bones started healing, and I was able to get back into it.”

More than a year after his accident, Galvan competed in his first-ever bodybuilding competition in his hometown of San Antonio on Oct. 7, 2017. Two days after, he was back on patrol and uses the accident as a reminder not to take anything for granted.

“When I look at it, I’m kind of proud to say, ‘Hey, I survived that accident’ and managed to rebuild myself from that (accident). I embrace it, I don’t look at it as a negative.”
He said his most ambitious plan is marriage to his fiancée in 2018

Hendricks Denies GSP’s Veiled Steroid Allegations

Hendricks vs GSP Generation Iron

Hendricks denies Georges St-Pierre’s claims.

On Media Day for UFC 217 Johny Hendricks was asked about his move to JacksonWink MMA and steroid allegations. Footage courtesy of MMAFighting.

Hendricks has primarily been associated with coach Steven Wright, formerly of Team Takedown and currently the head of War Room MMA. Though Hendricks once held the Welterweight title, the 34-year-old Oklahoman has struggled over the past three years having gone just 2-5 in his last seven outings. His problems were exacerbated by his inability to make the welterweight limit on multiple occasions, prompting a move up to 185 pounds where he has gone 1-1.

When asked about how he liked training at JacksonWink in Albequerque Hendricks responded,

“Loved it. Loved Jacksons. And the reason why I went there is they’ve already trained for me a couple of times. So they know what kind of fighter I was and what kind of of fighter I want to be now. And you know Jackson is so smart when it comes to that sort of thing and Wink is right there with him, you know those two together and then you throw my boxing coach in there… You give me a year with those three –Jackson, Wink, and my boxing coach Tony- I don’t think anything beats me on my feet in a year.”

Strength Wars Movie

The former champion was also asked about thinly veiled steroid accusations made by former opponent Georges St- Pierre and the suspicion that his career tumble was caused by the introduction of US Anti-Doping Agency into the UFC.

“I dont really care. You know, if I need steroids to compete and to shorten my life – I got four beautiful Kids. I don’t need that sh*t to win a fight. He’s only pissed off because I’m stronger than he is. Here’s the thing: If I’m on steroids then why hasn’t my body changed? Why am I now looking bigger than I did at 170? Because I’m doing it naturally. I just lift weights. Like I said – the way I look at steroids and all that other bullsh**t, if you gotta take that, it’s like a c*ockblock. There’s something in your head that you’re not mentally tough. You’re weak, you’re a weak individual….You’re a fraud, you really are. I’ve been tested since I was a freshman in college… I’m clean!”

Hendricks will face Paulo Borrachinha in a Middleweight fight this Saturday at UFC 217 in Madison Square Garden.

Cody Garbrandt Releases Footage Of Him Knocking Out TJ Dillashaw In Sparring

The footage has been revealed.

This Saturday’s fight between former Team Alpha Male teammates Cody Garbrandt and T.J. Dillashaw has been a long time coming. Ever since TJ left TAM, the bad blood has continued to brew. Among the unconfirmed allegations between the two was that Cody had footage of himself knocking TJ out in sparring. This was denied by TJ, but yesterday Cody released the footage on his Instagram.

In the interest of fairness, it is worth pointing out that the clip is only six seconds long and blurry. But anyone familiar with the fighter’s shapes and movements can easily tell it is them. TJ sent a message to MMAJunkie as a reply, denying that it was KO.

“Yeah, tell him to keep playing the video, I get up and start going again. There was no KO like he’s been stating.”

Strength Wars Movie

Cody Garbrandt responded to a fan on Twitter about the clip:

“Lmao he couldn’t even walk after that strike hit him I would of pounded his skull in.”

The rivals will have the ultimate chance to settle their beef on Saturday when Garbrandt defends his bantamweight title against Dillashaw in the co-main event of UFC 217 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, N.Y.

Though their bout will be superseded by a Middleweight title fight between Michael Bisping and returning former Welterweight champion Georges St- Pierre, many are calling this fight the ‘real Main Event.’ It is without a doubt one of the best fights possible in MMA, not just because of the heated backstory, but also for the incredible abilities each bring into the cage. Both are well rounded, although Cody applies his wrestling as a counter-measure to keep the fight standing where his years of amateur boxing and heavy hands usually end the fight. TJ has more weapons although arguably less power, he presents a kaleidoscope of kicks, punches, angles, ranges, and takedowns that many believe will win him the title. Frankly, it is impossible for this fight not to be a brilliant display of the best of MMA.

UFC 217: Cody Garbrandt vs TJ Dillashaw Will Be A Heated War Between Former Brothers-In-Arms

Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw have bad blood they will settle at UFC 217.

For many fans the battle between bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt and former champ TJ Dillashaw is the unofficial main event of UFC 217. No disrespect to the men involved in the main event but you just can’t beat a nice grudge match. These two men have trained with each other for years and the rift caused by TJ Dillashaw leaving Team Alpha Male has been well documented. Now Garbrandt and Dillashaw will get to face off in a feud that seems like it was cut straight out of the movies. Which of these two former training partners turned rivals will come out victorious? Well let’s breakdown what each fighter has to offer the other.

Cody Garbrandt showcased a tremendous amount of maturity in his title fight against the greatest bantamweight champion of all time, Dominick Cruz. In winning the belt, Garbrandt solidified himself as the elite of the elite, not just through utilizing his power, but his tremendous footwork and head movement as well. With his amateur boxing and wrestling experience buoying him, Garbrandt was able to catch Cruz on multiple occasions with thunderous power shots as well as with well timed takedowns when Cruz found himself out of position.

Those clips go a long way in showcasing Garbrandt’s ability to read situations and exploit them at a moments notice. He’ll need that awareness once again in this match up as TJ Dillashaw has far more concussive force in his shots than Cruz. Striking in the pocket will be Garbrandt’s best opportunity to win this fight as Dillashaw can sometimes find himself freezing after throwing combinations. While he doesn’t utilize as a jab very often, he’d be smart to do so in this match even if it’s only to set up leg kicks. Dillashaw likes to move laterally quite a lot, often times in a wider stance. A well placed leg or body kick as Dillashaw is moving one way or another will do well to shut down the former champs momentum. In the below clip Garbrandt lands a right body kick and defends the shot before once again getting on his bicycle. Once Cruz moves again to his left, Garbrandt slams a hard leg kick home.

Cody Garbrandt should also use his takedowns as a means of setting up his hands up top. If you allow Dillashaw to get comfortable in the striking realm then it will make it all the easier for the former champ to use his wrestling. Wrestling to get into the clinch then striking on the exit will pay major dividends. While Dillashaw may have more tools to utilize from what we’vr seen, Garbrandt holds the biggest X-factor in this match up with the power in both his left and right hands. When Dillashaw looks for his darting right hands and jabs, an overhand right or left hook will work beautifully as a counter. Even in his older fights you could see Garbrandt had great timing on his overhand right.

TJ Dillashaw has been increasingly harder to hit since he lost the title to Dominick Cruz. Dillashaw doesn’t stand in the pocket nearly as much as he used to. Instead of purely striking, Dillashaw now shoots for takedowns much more often. In his battle against bantamweight contender John Lineker, the former champ would set up his takedowns by feinting up top, then going for a low leg trip.

If Dillashaw wants to defeat the champion then he’s going to have to use all of his tools to force Garbandt to constantly think. He needs to force counters out of Garbrandt so that he can set up reactive takedowns off of hooks, the champ’s favored striking technique.

Dillashaw’s fight at UFC 200 saw him avenge his loss to Raphael Assuncao in a competitive match. What made him so potent in that rematch was the fact that he used in and out movement as well as aim for accuracy over power. While he may be shorter than Garbrandt, Dillashaw fights longer. Dillashaw loves his straight punches usually into kicks. He likes to mask a stutter step with a jab or cross before throwing a powerful high kick.

He should aim to change levels with this strike going from the legs to the head to the body and back again. If Garbrandt rolls too low he could run face first into a head kick. Another good strategy for Dillashaw would be to set up specific patterns and exploit Garbrandt’s reactions. “Isn’t that the point of fighting, genius?” I can hear the critics now. Well, Dillashaw likes to using a darting straight very similar in execution to Stephen Thompson’s own movements.

Performing this technique a few times then disengaging could bait Garbrant into following up his attack. From there, Dillashaw could shock Garbrandt with a one of those well timed reactive takedowns to change the complexion of the fight.

With so much bad blood between these two former training partners, there’s no way these two won’t be bringing some emotions with them into the cage. Whoever can stick to the game plan will no doubt come out the victor in this battle. Either way, I can’t wait.

Conor McGregor Wants A ‘Partner’ Stake In The UFC For Return

Conor McGregor wants to make some big moves.

The public negotiation period has begun. When Conor McGregor was knocked out by Floyd Mayweather in their August superfight, much speculation has been made over the irishman’s next move. He owns the UFC Lightweight belt and ostensibly is required to defend it, but a match against Interim champion Tony Ferguson is far from his most lucrative potential endeavor. Now Conor has taken to the media, making it clear that for a return to the UFC, he wants a bigger stake in the game.

Speaking to reporters outside the premiere of his documentary “Notorious” on Wednesday night in Dublin, McGregor reiterated that he’s keeping his options open, while in negotiations with the UFC.

“We’ll see,” he said. “We’re in the process of negotiations, there’s a couple of opponents across different sports now in play, there’s the boxing game also.”

Strength Wars Movie

McGregor has stated several times over the past couple years he ultimately wants an equity stake in the UFC. His company, McGregor Promotions was listed as one of the promotional partners in the Mayweather fight.

He clearly doesn’t feel comfortable being just another fighter on the UFC roster.

“We’re in the contract negotiation stage,” McGregor said. “It’s got to, they’ve got to entice me now because, I came from a billion-dollar fight. I want equity, I want pay-per-view. I want to be a true partner. You have to entice me now. I want to be a partner. I want to be a promoter and I want to be a fighter for me to continue.”

Footage comes via SevereMMA.

McGregor’s negotiating position is uncertain. The UFC likely needs him less than he needs the UFC, and in order for McGregor to keep expanding his brand he needs to be taken seriously as a champion. Furthermore, negotiation with the UFC’s new corporate owners WME-IMG will be far more difficult than it would have been with Zuffa, run by the Fertitta brothers, personal friends of Conor. In any case, hopefully the situation will be resolved soon and the fans can see Conor back in the Octagon where they grew to admire him.
