The country keeps changing when it comes to many things that were once deemed taboo. Like all things – we grow as time passes on and understand things in a new light. This is happening as we speak in regards to marijuana’s legality in the United States but we’re far from a true consensus on where it will ultimately land. Regardless, it’s an understatement to say that many Americans smoke weed… including bodybuilders. But how does this drug actually effect the bodybuilding lifestyle and training? Our trio of hosts get into the dirty truth behind what real world bodybuilders actually think about weed and bodybuilding. They also invite our special guest Aaron Singerman of Blackstone Labs to give his two cents on the drug culture and bodybuilding and what it means for the future of the sport. Listen to the brand new episode above.

BACK TRAINING: BIG RAMY SHOWS SADIK HOW TO GET MASSIVE

Generation Iron Big Ramy trains Sadik

Generation Iron Big Ramy trains Sadik

Sadik’s learning how to get BIG from one of the biggest.

For any athlete involved in competitive sports, the goal is always the same. To have a drive to compete means having the drive to become the very best at what you do. Competing in sports means to not only overcome your fellow competitors, but to overcome yourself, to improve upon the things that come naturally as well as the attributes that are less than perfect. All of these ideologies apply to bodybuilding seamlessly, particularly the part about overcoming oneself. You must continue to build muscle, follow a strict diet, and keep pushing yourself in the gym in order to see new results and constantly improve your physical form.

Ever since the announcement of the Classic Physique Division, many wondered if Sadik Hadzovik would be making the transition over to the newly minted category. Having been one of the stalwarts of the Men’s Physique Division, it made sense for Sadik to eventually make the jump, specifically since he seemed to gain muscle easily. Now that he has fully committed himself to the idea, Sadik has been training like an absolute madman in the gym trying to build a tremendous amount of muscle while still maintaining a tight frame.

Champions aren’t born, they’re made, carved out of stone through long hours of training and the mindset to never give in. But champions can’t be made alone and it’s a fact that Sadik understands well. Big Ramy is one of Sadik’s GAT team mates and as such the two have been training hard together, pushing one another every step of the way. Take a look at some of the hardcore training the two are putting in at the gym.

How do you think Sadik will do in the Classic Physique Division?

UFC FIGHT NIGHT 89: DONALD CERRONE VS PATRICK COTE

BOSTON, MA - JANUARY 17: (R-L) Patrick Cote of Canada punches Ben Saunders in their welterweight bout during the UFC Fight Night event inside TD Garden on January 17, 2016 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

cerrone vs cote headerThe Cowboy and The Predator clash in the co-main event.

Besides the main event at UFC Fight Night 89, there’s another welterweight contest on the undercard which features a pair of fan favorites with a propensity for creating beautiful chaos when they get into the cage. Donald Cerrone and Patrick Cote are two mixed martial artists who have evolved their games from being simply strikers to well rounded fighters. As they head for a collision course at UFC Fight Night 89, the fans are sure to see some high octane action. hi-res-be6fa9bd37d6ec1cce8d49492202830f_crop_northDonald Cerrone is making the trip to the Welterweight division much like his old friend and former rival Ben Henderson did before him. No one knows if this will be a permanent move up or if he’s just testing the waters, but one thing is certain; he’s in for one hell of a challenge. Cerrone is a great muay thai stylist who has a tendency to be quite hittable. Despite that fact, when he’s in the zone, Cerrone is a dangerous striker who strings together combinations beautifully, usually ending hand combinations with well placed chopping low kicks. He also has a decent wrestling game and can utilize it on offense and defense quite well. At least at Lightweight anyway. Moving up in weight class can either diminish his striking power and ability to defend takedowns or allow those skills to flourish. Where Patrick Cote is concerned the veteran has made steady progress in the last few years. Rather than being simply a brawler, Cote is become more of a tactician in the later years of his career. He’s not afraid to trade inside the pocket, but now he utilizes well timed and effective takedowns as well. Gone are the days of Cote slugging until the man with the better chin is victorious. Now he’ll mix in his clinching, wrestling, and grappling for a dangerous combination for anyone in the Welterweight division. He’s likely to have the strength and power advantage in this fight and still has a iron jaw that has been tough to crack.011816-UFC-Patrick-Cote-pi-ssm.vadapt.664.high.65 When it comes down to it, Cerrone may be talented at Lightweight, but fighting at a higher weight class is a whole different story. Cerrone will have the speed advantage over Cote, but “The Predator” has been effective in the pocket before, has one hell of a chin, and the option to take the smaller man to the mat. Look for Cote to do just that as he nabs a unanimous decision victory Saturday night. Who do you think will win, Cowboy or The Predator? Follow Generation Iron MMA on Facebook and Twitter. The Front Shoulder Raise… On Steroids.

So it’s almost summertime and your shoulders are still lacking. What are you going to do? The shoulders are one of the most overlooked parts in the workout arsenal. Because it’s involved in damn near every upper body workout casual lifters assume it’s already covered. But when they come up against people who seriously lift, they look like amateurs and wonder why. The truth is working your shoulders specifically should be a staple in your workout and the front raise should be in your arsenal.

Men’s health Fitness Director  B.J. Gaddour gives you 3 different ways to do the front raise from hell. If done properly this exercise not only hits all the muscles in your shoulder complex (Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres major, Teres minor, deltoid, etc.) but gives you flexibility through range of motion, and inadvertently works your mid and upper back as well.

Even if you are a seasoned vet, muscle confusion is key. The Front shoulder raise is a great way to switch things up or add something new to an already stellar circuit. Check out the full workout below and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments section.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF BRIAN SHAW THE WORLD’S STRONGEST MAN

brian shaw day in the life headerChampions are shaped out of hard work and dedication.

Many bodybuilders are inspired by the comic book superheroes they grew up reading about in their youth. Characters like the Superman, Batman, Wolverine, Captain America, and the Incredible Hulk have been a source of motivation for many to this day. But despite a great deal of athlete looking like they came straight out of a comic book, not all of those bodybuilders are able to claim that they’re one of the strongest human beings to walk the face of the earth. It’s a statement that World’s Strongest Man Brian Shaw is able assert with pride and confidence.

The two time World’s Strongest Man, Brian Shaw has battled against some of the strongest men on the planet including the massive Icelandic strongman Hafthor “The Mountain” Bjornsson. Redeeming himself last year year after coming in third place at the 2014 event, Shaw was able to come back and reclaim his throne as he pushed himself in the off season to make some serious strength gains.

In order to reclaim his number one placing, Shaw had to undergo some intense training to be able to overcome monsters like The Mountain and Zydrunas Savickas on his way to triumphing at the 2015 World’s Strongest Man event. The 2016 has yet to occur which means there is still plenty of time for athletes like Shaw and The Mountain to prep for the show.

Brian Shaw recently teamed up with Furious Pete for a video series that demonstrates exactly what a day is like for the World’s Strongest Man. Check out everything from Shaw’s diet to his training regimen that he utilizes in order to get himself into fighting form.

“Inappropriate attire” gets a Canadian gym goer in trouble.

When it comes to body shaming and sexism in 2016 things can get pretty complicated – especially when it comes to public establishments such as gyms. Where are the lines drawn? This is the issue a Canadian gym has run into lately after recently asking a gym patron to leave and basically… never come back because of the clothing she was wearing. But the big issue that complicates the whole affair is that the clothing she was wearing was very similar to many other people in the gym. The real problem? Her breasts were larger. So was this woman really banned from a gym simply because her larger breasts look bigger in traditional gym clothing? Watch our latest GI News recap and find out the whole story. Check it out above.

KEVIN LEVRONE GIVES UPDATE ON HIS OLYMPIA TRAINING

levrone training update headerChampions must train like champions.

If you ask most professional bodybuilders they’d probably agree with the adage that receiving an IFBB pro card is easier than actually winning a pro show. The amateur scene is filled with hungry contenders looking to make it to the professional stage and also avid bodybuilders who are just competing for fun. Once you get to the professional levels of the sport the ones who are just competing for fun are weeded out fairly quickly as they realize that the pro scene is a whole different animal. You can’t simply bring your B game and expect to win a pro show. Everyone at the pro level means business or they’re out the door in no time.

Training for pro shows may seem the same as any other competition, professional or not. But the truth of the matter is that though training splits may look the same on paper, the preparation is treated with a different type of gravitas. The intensity of training is ramped up to eleven and it has to be. Doing your best in training simply isn’t enough if you’re looking to win a pro show, much less one of the bigger bodybuilding competitions such as the Olympia and the Arnold Classic.

It’s something that the veteran Kevin Levrone understands all too well.

Now that he’s officially decided to make a comeback and compete at the Olympia this year, many fans and pundits have wondered if Kevin Levrone still has what it takes to compete at the highest levels of the sport. But Levrone doesn’t seem like a man who would half ass an opportunity like the one he has before him now. He realizes that if he wants to win that he’ll have to bring his A game and the veteran is preparing for the challenge with a well thought out training split.

Update ?

WHO HAS THE MOST TO LOSE AT UFC FIGHT NIGHT 89

rory vs stephen headerThe stakes are high at the next UFC event.

This weekend features a fight with two of the best Welterweights in the division. UFC Fight Night 89 is a pretty big card for not being a pay-per-view event. Rory MacDonald versus Stephen Thompson is a monster of a fight with both men having advantages over the other. MacDonald is a tactician with killer instinct, mixing things up nicely in much of his bouts. Thompson is a striking wizard with laser-beam accuracy, blistering punches, and deadly kicks. But whole the breakdown is certainly one any MMA fan would and could enjoy, this article isn’t about how these two men match up. No, this is much deeper than that. The stakes are high in this match up and both men have much to lose. But who will lose the most if they can’t get a win this Saturday? Stephen Thompson is no spring chicken despite looking like he’s in his early twenties. The karate based fighter has a wealth of experience in kickboxing and decided to pick up MMA late in his life, much to the pleasure of many UFC fans. But his age may be the biggest factor in this fight as far as a loss would go. At 33 years of age Thompson doesn’t have a ton of time left in his prime and he’ll need to make the most of it come June 18. If Thompson were to lose at UFC Fight Night 89 you can bet that his stock will take a major hit. Thompson would be bumped back in the title picture and would have to once again climb up the mountain to prove he’s worthy of a title shot. Rory MacDonald is an entirely different story. While MacDonald may have put on one of the greatest fights of all time last summer against Robbie Lawler, the fact of the matter is that he lost the match and hasn’t fought since. To make your comeback against Stephen Thompson is a rough out for anyone looking to get back in the win column. But besides losing the bout, MacDonald has some other things to consider as well. Like the fact that this is the last fight on his UFC contract and that he hasn’t been on the best of terms with the company. MacDonald wants more money as he thinks he’s worth more which is fair to say. After UFC Fight Night 89 would could see MacDonald test free agency in order to get some more cash. But a loss to Thompson on the way out would drastically harm his bargaining ability. Though losing to Thompson isn’t exactly the worst fate for a fighter, it would mean that MacDonald would either have to take what the UFC is offering or move on to another promotion in hopes of receiving the payday he believes he deserves. Make no mistake, Rory MacDonald has the most to lose at UFC Fight Night 89. He knows it, the UFC knows it, the fans know it, and probably most important of all, Stephen Thompson knows it. Who do you think has the most to lose at UFC Fight Night 89? Follow Generation Iron MMA on Facebook and Twitter. Also, be sure to share, like, and comment to show your support.

CHAD MENDES FLAGGED BY USADA FOR POTENTIAL ANTI-DOPING VIOLATION

chad mendes

Say it ain’t so…

It seems another UFC fighter is in trouble with USADA. Team Alpha Male star and featherweight contender Chad Mendes has recently tested positive for a banned substance during out of competition testing. Thought of as one of UFC truly genuine guys, the news came as a shock to the MMA community. UFC put out the following statement on Friday evening:

“The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Chad Mendes of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection. USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case. It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair review process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed. Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.”

Now before we get ahead of ourselves, we have to remember that sample results could bring up a number of things. Not necessarily steroids, things like recreational drugs or certain protein powders can cause fighters to piss hot with the new USADA rules and stringent requirements. If he is found guilty however, this could be a big blow to his career as he’s already mentioned retirement in interviews as well as taking time off to focus on his celebrity hunting business. Hopefully this turns out to be a Yoel Romero, and only a few months of suspension is warranted, if not, it seems another Alpha Male has bit the dust.
