UFC FIGHT NIGHT 89: DONALD CERRONE VS PATRICK COTE

Besides the main event at UFC Fight Night 89, there’s another welterweight contest on the undercard which features a pair of fan favorites with a propensity for creating beautiful chaos when they get into the cage. Donald Cerrone and Patrick Cote are two mixed martial artists who have evolved their games from being simply strikers to well rounded fighters. As they head for a collision course at UFC Fight Night 89, the fans are sure to see some high octane action. hi-res-be6fa9bd37d6ec1cce8d49492202830f_crop_northDonald Cerrone is making the trip to the Welterweight division much like his old friend and former rival Ben Henderson did before him. No one knows if this will be a permanent move up or if he’s just testing the waters, but one thing is certain; he’s in for one hell of a challenge. Cerrone is a great muay thai stylist who has a tendency to be quite hittable. Despite that fact, when he’s in the zone, Cerrone is a dangerous striker who strings together combinations beautifully, usually ending hand combinations with well placed chopping low kicks. He also has a decent wrestling game and can utilize it on offense and defense quite well. At least at Lightweight anyway. Moving up in weight class can either diminish his striking power and ability to defend takedowns or allow those skills to flourish. Where Patrick Cote is concerned the veteran has made steady progress in the last few years. Rather than being simply a brawler, Cote is become more of a tactician in the later years of his career. He’s not afraid to trade inside the pocket, but now he utilizes well timed and effective takedowns as well. Gone are the days of Cote slugging until the man with the better chin is victorious. Now he’ll mix in his clinching, wrestling, and grappling for a dangerous combination for anyone in the Welterweight division. He’s likely to have the strength and power advantage in this fight and still has a iron jaw that has been tough to crack.011816-UFC-Patrick-Cote-pi-ssm.vadapt.664.high.65 When it comes down to it, Cerrone may be talented at Lightweight, but fighting at a higher weight class is a whole different story. Cerrone will have the speed advantage over Cote, but “The Predator” has been effective in the pocket before, has one hell of a chin, and the option to take the smaller man to the mat. Look for Cote to do just that as he nabs a unanimous decision victory Saturday night. Who do you think will win, Cowboy or The Predator? Follow Generation Iron MMA on Facebook and Twitter.
