ARE BODYBUILDERS TOO SELF ABSORBED?

Generation Iron Self Absorbed bodybuilding

Self obsession or self improvement?

A lot of people may look at your average bodybuilder and say “what a self absorbed asshole” or “wow, someone is in love with themselves”. I for one tell those people to shut the hell up. They have no idea what the hell they’re talking about, just spouting nonsense because of boredom, because of jealousy. But still, there’s a small part in the back of you mind that knows that notion of self obsession is somewhat true. Perhaps obsession isn’t the right word exactly – but definitely a dedication to oneself.

But really, is that a bad thing? We all have our reasons for getting into bodybuilding, whether it be a bad break up, pushing yourself to your limits, finding out what you’re made of, or just because you like to stay healthy and fit. And really, what’s wrong with that? If you have the right mind frame and a “healthy obsession” (don’t know if there’s such a thing, but let’s stick to that) then there’s nothing wrong with looking in the mirror and wanting to see a better version of you looking back.

Now can it be taken too far? Of course it can. When you start alienating your friends, become arrogant and distant, and believe that you’ll never look great, even with a set of six pack abs, then maybe you’ll have to take another look in that mirror and reevaluate a bit. So why the rant? A funny question came to mind that we at Generation Iron couldn’t help but tackle. Can a bodybuilder every be satisfied with their achievements – or is there always “something more” that can be done? Do Pro Bodybuilders have problems with self obsession?

The simple answer is yes. But it’s deeper than that. They’re paid to be self obsessive and not in a diabolical way. They have to scrutinize themselves to the utmost, because they know that they’re being judged on how they look which translates to being judged on how hard they push themselves in the gym. If they hope to win championships and collect checks you bet your ass they better be self obsessed. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be a better you – as long as your priorities are in check.

Compare this to any other passion. Let’s say you want to be a master artist – you damn well better start obsessing over how to make the best masterpiece that anyone has ever seen. If you don’t have that mentality – you’ll never make it. So what’s the difference between passion that bends towards an outward object as opposed to an obsession that bends towards self improvement and sculpting the body? The reality of it all is that there is no difference.

There’s nothing selfish about bodybuilding. It’s a choice to improve. It might seem “self obsessive,” but that doesn’t mean bodybuilders should be scoffed at. It should be understood and respected.
