Opinion: Does Rafael Brandao Prove Mass Monsters Are Going Out of Style?

Are mass monsters becoming yesterday’s news?

There used to be a time where mass monsters didn’t dominate the bodybuilding scene. Instead you had bodybuilders like Frank Zane who may not have been the largest athlete, but was perhaps the leanest, most shredded, and most well proportioned. The modern era of heavyweight pro bodybuilding, now dubbed Open Weight, has turned into a bit of a freak show to say the least.

Now, the argument can be made that this is the reason the Classic Physique division was introduced and why the mass monster complaints should be thrown to the wayside. But the problem with that argument is that the massive bodybuilders we’ve been seeing on stage as of late somehow are coming into competitions bloated and far from looking like pros.

Enter Rafael Brandao.

A Generation Iron athlete and talented Brazilian bodybuilder with a ton of upside, Rafael Brandao has been gaining a great deal of traction in the Open Weight division. But unlike most of the other competitors in the division who emphasize massive muscle, Rafael Brandao seems to be aiming for a different kind of look. Brandao seems to be focused on being as shredded and lean as possible while battling against the mass monsters on stage.

So many fans and onlookers even thought that Rafael Brandao deserved a higher placing at the recent New York Pro instead of his sixth place standing. In fact, fans seemed to be pretty upset to the point that they have begun to question criteria of judging bodybuilding shows. Yes, an argument can be made that Rafael Brandao could just head to the Classic Physique division and acquit himself well. But perhaps Brandao competing in the Open Weight division makes a bigger statement than if he just went to another category.

It begs the question as to whether bodybuilding is too concerned with being as massive as possible and not how aesthetic someone’s physical form is. Rafael Brandao is bringing something different to the table, competing against athletes way bigger than he is, but proving that his definition and presentation can at times beat out massive size. Only time will tell if this mindset catches on, but for now, Brandao has a uphill battle ahead of him.

Do you think bodybuilders are too massive these days?

The recent injury to Calum von Moger has truly been taxing on the young bodybuilder. With so much potential and a dream of one day receiving his IFBB Pro card, Calum von Moger is trying his best to remain positive during these trying times.

The knee injury he suffered during a cliff repelling incident has completely transformed Calum’s leg. Where it was once full and muscular it has since shrunk as he’s been unable to put the leg under any stress. But while some bodybuilders may have taken this as an opportunity to feel bad from themselves, Calum von Moger seems to still be in good spirits.

Calum is a positive person, always seen with a smile on his face and he appears to be in good spirits.

KSW 44 Features Fights With World’s Strongest Man Mariusz Pudzianowski and Popular Bodybuilders

KSW – The Emergance of an MMA Powerhouse

The world of mixed martial arts is a crazy one, dominated mainly by the UFC. However, around the world there are few rising promotions that are making their respective marks on the landscape. One such promotion is the European based powerhouse KSW.

With a blend of spectacle, top international fighters, rising prospects, their branded ‘freak fights’, and production values, KSW has grown to become the premier European MMA organisation. The promotion began small in 2004 in Poland and was the brainchild of co-owners Maciej Kawulski and Martin Lewandowski. Those humble beginnings saw the first few events take place in a hotel function room but with media attention and interest from national TV stations the promotion quickly gathered steam and moved to bigger venues.

In 2009 KSW jumped to the next level with the signing of Mariusz Pudzianowski. Coming into MMA off the back of winning his fifth ‘World’s Strongest Man’ title, Pudzianowski was a national hero, an international star and drew millions of people to the promotion. To this day ‘Pudzian’ is still one of the promotion’s biggest stars and is headlining their next event – KSW 44 – this Saturday, June 9 opposite former heavyweight champ Karol Bedorf.

Mariusz Pudzianowski is a former World’s Strongest Man

Along with Pudzianowski the promotion has Mamed Khalidov, a fighter many consider one of the greatest ever that never competed in the UFC. These two fighters have been the foundation for KSW in terms of their growth. Thanks to them as well as Lewandowski & Kawulski’s promotional genius, KSW has become the entity it is today.

2017 was a breakout year for them. With the ambitious KSW 39 event they broke records. 57,766 people attended the historic show in Warsaw, Poland last May in what was the largest MMA event ever in Europe and the second largest MMA event of all time, second only to an an old Pride card in Japan and larger than any event staged by the UFC. Their follow-up card saw their debut in Ireland and they capped off the year with a huge and diverse event that saw a massive crossover heavyweight fight involving Polish action movie star Tomasz Oswiecinski and infamous rapper Popek Monster.

As a result Forbes listed Lewandowski & Kawulski among the most powerful names in Polish sport, Fighters Only nominated KSW for ‘Promotion of the Year’ and the KSW brand has grown to be on of the hottest properties in the MMA world.

This growth has continued into 2018 and so far it has been the promotion’s most diverse yet. International stars like Dricus Du Plessis, Salahdine Parnasse, Roberto Soldic have all emerged as some of the top prospects in the sport. UFC veterans like Phil De Fries and Scott Askham have made new homes in KSW and the promotion has incredible domestic talent like Mateusz Gamrot, Tomasz Narkun, Michal Materla, and Damian Janikowski, who earned an Olympic medalist in wrestling.

Along with the above mentioned names KSW has also recently signed internationally recognised bodybuilder and fitness model Erko Jun, who will also compete at KSW 44 this Saturday, and Polish fitness guru Akop Szostak as well as having bodybuilder Robert Burneika and strongman Tyberiusz Kowalczyk on their roster of impressive heavyweight specimens.

Stay tuned to Generation Iron all week as we bring you some exclusive content and interviews from KSW 44. You can check out the trailer below for the event taking place on June 9.

Monday Motivation: Bionic Body Impresses At The 2018 Toronto Pro

Edgard John-Augustin, the “Bionic Body”, is a true inspiration.

Fulfilling your dream can be a daunting task. Most people dream, dream of a better tomorrow, of what they wish their future to be, of the goals they wish to accomplish while they are here on Earth. To dream is to be alive. To fulfill that dream is equal parts exciting and terrifying at once. Edgard John-Augustin is a man living his dream and making no excuses along the way.

After losing his legs at only four years old in a horrible car accident, it’s safe to say things were an uphill battle for Edgard John-Augustin. He survived bullying and ridicule from his peers growing up as children are prone to cruelty for they do not understand the weight their words carry. But those episodes of bullying and doubt would lead Edgard John-Augustin to become the man he is today. To become the man proudly dubbed “Bionic Body” a name that signifies both Edgard’s physical and mental strength.

When the man who would become known as Bionic Body discovered weightlifting, everything changed. Edgard began to build his body through tireless training, a dedication to nutrition, and an indomitable will to succeed. That drive led him to an IFBB Pro card, a feat that still impresses to this day.

Likely for Edgard, it wasn’t all that surprises. He knows the hard work he put in to become the man he is today, to become the Bionic Body. He alone knows the kind of hard work and sacrifice he needed to put forth in order to build himself to his current stature.

This past weekend at the 2018 Toronto Pro saw Edgard competing against some of the best and brightest the Classic Physique division had to offer. He acquitted himself well against great bodybuilders such as Terrence Ruffin. It’s this kind of impressive showcase that motivates us to no longer make excuses, to avoid making excuses and do the hard work necessary to fulfill our long standing dreams. Let Edgard John-Augustin, the Bionic Body, motivate you to achieve every dream you hold dear.
