After Doping Scandal, Dana White Gives Up On Jon Jones And Calls Him “Unfixable”

Dana White has given up on Jon Jones.

Dana White possesses many qualities uncommon among promoters. Perhaps the most noticeable of which is that he never hesitates to badmouth his own fighters. A high profile target of his criticism has been former UFC Lightheavyweight champion Jon Jones. Dana has expressed a mountain of criticism over the years, earlier in 2017 calling him the biggest waste of talent in the history of sports. Currently, Jones is preparing for his hearing over a positive drug test with the California Athletic Commission in December.

White went on the Jim Rome Show and didn’t pull any punches with a psychological analysis of Jon’s well-documented reckless behavior.

“I don’t know. He’s not a ‘just about the money’ type guy. He’s really not that kind of guy. I just think that Jon likes to party and he’s a guy that likes to go out and have fun and do whatever it is that he does, and I think the money and the fame made it a thousand times worse.

“This guy couldn’t control himself and would completely go off the deep end. I’m not sitting here acting like Mr. Holier-than-thou, we’ve all gone and had fun and probably partied a little too much here and there, but he consistently, consistently kept doing it. Even when he would completely f**k up, he would pull himself together and come out and completely f**k up again. Even this last time when he came back, fans forgave and he was the most popular fighter and everybody wanted to see this guy succeed, and he did it again. It’s just unbelievable.”

Jones is facing a four-year suspension from competition after this most recent test failure. He previously failed a test just prior to a planned fight with Lightheavyweight champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 200, which was met with a year suspension.

Maybe more concerning than the test failures are Jones criminal issues. In 2012, he was arrested on DWI charges in upstate New York and in 2015 plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and received 18 months probation. Next year, Jon was arrested for violating his probation after being pulled over for drag racing. He would go on to accept a plea deal in this case, again avoiding jail time. White says these problems are more cautionary than the USADA failures.

“Even worse than that, this guy was looking at jail time. This judge gave him another shot and this guy was looking at some serious jail time and a lot of bad stuff and that still didn’t wake him up. If that’s not a wake-up call, you’re unfixable.”

Yesterday Jones posted a video of him striking mitts on Instagram. The caption reads “Day 1. Pick Yourself Up and Start Again”.

How do you think the Jon Jones story will end?

After KO Of A Legend, Derek Brunson Issues Challenge To Luke Rockhold And Chris Weidman

Derek Brunson is looking to make big moves at middleweight.

After middleweight Derek Brunson’s first round KO victory against Lyoto Machida on Saturday, UFC commentator and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier prompted him to pick his next opponent live at UFC Sao Paulo. It took Brunson a second, but he came up with Cormier’s teammate and former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold.

“He’s a top-level guy,” Brunson said at the post-fight presser. “He’s one or two in the division. I think it would be a great matchup. I think I could put hands on him, touch that chin one time, I can put him down also.”

“I wasn’t planning on calling Rockhold out, I didn’t have anybody in mind, it just kind of came to me at the last minute. And was like OK, that would be a good guy to fight next.”

Brunson has won seven of his last nine fights, with all but one of those victories going past Round 1. A fight between Brunson and Rockhold could be for the number one contender slot. The division champion Michael Bisping will face returning former Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 217 this weekend and Interim hampion Robert Whittaker is waiting in the wings.

Strength Wars Movie

“For sure, a win over Rockhold would definitely get me next to the title shot,” Brunson said. “The media sleeps on me a lot, but what I’ve done in the UFC, what I’ve done over my career – I had a controversial decision over Anderson, let’s say I get that win, that takes away a loss. Romero, I was beating him two rounds to zero, I was dominating the whole fight. He was able to catch me with a punch with about a minute left. If I would have just danced around for a minute, I would have got that win. Whittaker, I touched him a lot, he touched me a lot, I rocked him, he rocked me, he was able to get the win.

“So I’ve definitely had a crazy career, but I’m starting to put it together and starting to take my time and know that I can really do some damage if I just slow down just a little bit.”

Today, Derek Brunson tweeted a fight request to Rockhold and former champion Chris Weidman, saying that both have 24 hours to accept. They should be eager to, as a victory over Brunson will likely mean the next shot at the belt. It will certainly mean a spectacular fight for all us fans!

Do you think Rockhold and Weidman will accept the challenge?

World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall Is Looking To Get Shredded Once Again

Eddie Hall is looking to make some changes after he retires.

As far as bodybuilding and strongman athletes go, the biggest comparison will always come down to physique. Where bodybuilders focus more on building up their bodies and packing on muscle, a strongman focuses on, you guessed it, being as strong as humanly possible. There are many standout strongmen out there that look strong while at the same time having a more streamlined physique (Hafthor Bjornsson is one who comes to mind). The current World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall however is a different case.

Eddie Hall is an absolute powerhouse. Taking first place at this past year’s World’s Strongest Man competition solidified him as the one of the true greats of the sport. In order to be capable of the acts of human strength he’s been able to accomplish, it means that Eddie Hall has eat his fair share of calories while building both strength and muscle. But as said before, the emphasis behind being a World’s Strongest Man isn’t having the best physique in the world, it’s about being the strongest man on the field.

But as his career begins to wind down, it appears that Eddie Hall is looking to make some major life changes, specifically after he’s retired from competition. In a recent interview with The Maelstrom, Eddie Hall detailed exactly where he sees himself in the next two years and what to expect. When asked about what he’ll do when he doesn’t have to pack food into his body for competition, Hall’s response was simple:

“I’m gonna be retired in the next 18 months, that’s my definite goal, and I’ve got to reduce my food as I reduce my training. I was 31 stone in bodyweight, I mean ideally at my height a good healthy size would be 23 or 24 stone, that’s what I’m aiming for, you know I don’t want to be walking around at 30 odd stone for the rest of my life because it’s gonna put me in the ground. I’ve got a plan, the next 18 months once that’s over I’m gonna drop a load of weight and shred up basically.”

So it appears that Eddie Hall is looking to move towards the bodybuilding side of things after retirement. What do you make of Eddie Hall and his decision to get shredded in 18 months?

UFC 217: Stephen Thompson vs Jorge Masvidal Will Be A Striker’s Delight

Stephen Thompson and Jorge Masvidal is a great style clash.

UFC 217 has a triple decker of title fights featuring a legacy fight at middleweight, a grudge make at bantamweight, and an absolute war at strawweight. Despite all of that, the most anticipated fight for a certain striking fanatic is a battle in the welterweight division between two seasoned strikers as Stephen Thompson is set to do battle against Jorge Masvidal. While you would call this a match up against kickboxers, both men employ a very different style of attack. Where Masvidal has a mix of different striking disciplines in his toolkit, most prominently his crisp boxing, Thompson is a karate stylist with good boxing fundamentals of his own.

While his rematch with Tyron Woodley didn’t go his way, Stephen Thompson remains one of the most standout strikers in the welterweight division. He is able to dictate the pace of his fights by utilizing different fakes and feints that can throw an opponent off his scent until Thompson is ready to unleash a genuine strike. For the most part his feints come in the way of fake jabs, but his karate bounce, or set bounce, allows him to lull his opponents into a false sense of security or even anticipation that have them either standing frozen awaiting an explosive blitz from Thompson or lunging forward to be met with a counter.

What Stephen Thompson will want to do in this fight is what he’s always been proficient at doing in the striking realm: offering up variety. Obviously his trade mark side kick will make an appearance in this match, but he won’t want to rely on this technique. Lateral movement and quick angle changes should be his bread and butter in this match up. He doesn’t want to stay in one place too long to allow Masvidal opportunities to open up with his jabs. Instead, his shift through cross, or darting straight, from orthodox to southpaw should be a great weapon to either set up another cross or a side kick to exploit the new angle.

https://gfycat.com/gifs/detail/SelfishExaltedCleanerwrasse

Primarily, Thompson should stick to the southpaw stance where he can control the range by trapping Masvidal’s front hand. That front hand control will allow for numerous different options from calf kicks to the straight left hand. Adding that set bounce will also act as a potent feint and throw Masvidal off of his timing. Masvidal does use a lot of other tools, but his jab and front hand feints play a hugely important role in setting up his offense. Thompson’s fight with Rory MacDonald showcased how dangerous the karate striker can be in an open stance battle.

via Gfycat

Jorge Masvidal is just one of those fighters who will always give his opponents problems. With a hardnosed attitude and the skills to back it up, Masvidal is generally pretty responsible when entering and exiting the pocket, using his jab as a multifaceted tool. When he’s not using the jab as a legit weapon, Masvidal can also use the front hand punch as a range finder as well as a beautiful feint to set up his right cross into the left hook. His finish of Donald Cerrone showcased his patience and economy in his striking while eventually leading him to hurt Cerrone on multiple occasions until ultimately seizing the finish.

Since he can’t rely on Thompson planting himself directly in front of him and trading leather, Jorge Masvidal is going to want to exploit the karate fighter’s wider stance and attack the calf with leg kicks. As soon as Thompson sets into a side stance then Masvidal should look for the leg kick immediately. Destroying Thompson’s wheels will go a long way to stopping his movement. Pressuring Thompson with continuous feints and jabs should also be a priority for Masvidal. Thompson has great cage/ring generalship, but can be forced into a bit of a firefight when his back is up against the fence. Masvidal should work the body and the legs while in the center of the cage while jabbing up top to push Thompson back or force him to move laterally.

Once Thompson moves, Masvidal has to be diligent about cutting off the cage, kicking the karate stylist’s legs while he’s on the retreat. This will not only slow down Thompson, but give Masvidal the opportunity to cut off his opponent and force him to trade when he stops his movement. Masvidal’s wrestling and clinch game shouldn’t be taken for granted either. If he can force Thompson into the clinch, Masvidal should let his elbows fly.

This should be a great striking match up, perhaps on par with the three title fights headlining this major event. Will it be the karate of Stephen Thompson or the diverse striking game of Jorge Masvidal that prevails?

Dana White Writes Open Letter To Mark Hunt And The UFC Heavyweight Fires Back

The Dana White/UFC feud with Mark Hunt continues.

In an open letter, UFC president Dana White has issued a formal reply to criticisms of his decision to remove fighter Mark Hunt from UFC Sydney. In it, he claims that the decision was made with Mark Hunt’s health in mind.

Hunt was slated to fight Marcin Tybura in Heavyweight main event of the Nov. 18 event in Sydney, Australia. However, on Oct. 10, the UFC announced that Fabricio Werdum would be stepping in as a replacement due to concerns over Hunt’s health.

In the statement, UFC officials claimed change was made based on a testimonial that Hunt had written for the Players Voice this past September, in which the veteran fighter said that he was slurring his words and having difficulty with his memory.

Hunt is currently involved in a lawsuit against his employers, White, and Brock Lesnar over his belief that the UFC circumvented drug testing regulations, allowing Lesnar to fight him at UFC 200.

Now White has issued a more formal reply to the criticisms being levied against him. See his full statement below per the Daily Telegraph:

“Mark Hunt was never “cleared” to fight Marcin Tybura in Sydney, Australia this November. Period. And the statements he’s been making, saying that he is, are just not true.

Let me tell you what I know.

Mark Hunt recently wrote an op-ed piece for an Australian website that described some serious symptoms.

He wrote that he’s starting to stutter and slur his words.

He wrote that he’s not sleeping well.

He wrote that he can’t remember something he did yesterday.

These are his words, from him, but now he’s saying it was taken out of context. How can you take your own words out of context? So you know what I did? My team contacted his management within the first week of learning about these symptoms and offered to fly him to Las Vegas first class to visit the Lou Ruvo Brain Center — which is the best in the world for brain research — to get more tests done. And you know what? He absolutely refused.

How can I put a guy with these symptoms he said he’s experiencing immediately back in the Octagon without additional tests? I definitely wasn’t going to do that. So I did the only thing I could do — which is to pull him off an event that would have him fighting just nine weeks after writing his piece so he can have the proper time to see a specialist. Let me remind you that this is an event I already had signed contracts for and spent a lot of money marketing and advertising, so this was a big loss. But it was the right thing to do.

Strength Wars Movie

“So here we are now. After all of this, Mark is saying that I have it out for him and I am holding a grudge because he filed a lawsuit. Let me ask you this:

Would I have placed him in two additional fights, including one in which he headlined the event?

Or paid him 1.645 million dollars, which includes a $50k Fight of the Night bonus and a $25k discretionary bonus?

All of this was AFTER the lawsuit, so how can anyone say I have any issues with this guy?
Bottom line, my job is to put on the best fights in the world and part of that is to protect these guys from themselves. I get it, they’re fighters and they want to fight. But this only works if safety comes first, and that’s always been my goal — to provide a level playing field and a safe, regulated environment for our fighters to compete in. I’ve been doing that for almost 20 years and I’m not going to stop now.”

On The MMA Hour, Hunt responded that he doesn’t see the high earnings as some sort of UFC charity.

“That’s money I worked for. You haven’t paid me nothing. I’ve earned that money.”

Hunt believes the whole situation is punishment for speaking out against certain UFC practices.

“They don’t like people telling the truth,” Hunt said. “You want the truth? You can’t handle the f*cking truth!”

There are three fights left on his contract, Hunt said. He either wants to fight or he wants to be compensated for those fights.

“They’re got three fights to honor,” Hunt said. “Either pay me out of the contract or give me three fights.”

At this point, Hunt said he just doesn’t know enough about what is next. But he is willing to take steps in order to get back into the Octagon.

“If there’s things they want me to do to compete, then fine,” Hunt said. “I’ll do that. I need to do these three fights and move on. … I’m still waiting for what they want me to do. I’m still waiting to here what it is that I need to do to fix this.”

Do you think Dana White and the UFC did the right thing by Mark Hunt?
