SHOULD WE REALLY BE SCORING POSING ROUNDS IN THE IFBB?

Generation Iron Scoring Posing Rounds IFBB

Generation Iron Scoring Posing Rounds IFBB

Is the new attempt to score posing rounds at the Arnold’s the right next step?

If you haven’t realized by now, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t have, then you should know that some big changes have come to all the Arnold Classic events for the men’s open weight and 212 divisions in 2016. With many fans seeking a return to form for bodybuilding like the days of old, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bob Lorimer have gone on record to state that posing routines will now be scored for the 212 and open weight divisions. To some it may be viewed as innovation. To others it’s a return to form for bodybuilding… as posing was once given great weight in the earlier days of the sport.

.

Why the big change? Apparently Arnold hasn’t been all that impressed with many of the bodybuilders of this era and has made his displeasure known on several occasions. He believes that posing is what made bodybuilding a true sport, an art form to be appreciated. Where posing routines were strategically planned out and performed like a choreographed dance in the old days, the current breed of bodybuilders have shown an inability to pose with the same grace and form in the way of the classic competitors. Arnold also point to the fact that the athletes of today have less muscle control and shake considerably when they have to hold their poses.

All that being said, you have to wonder whether or not this move by Schwarzenegger and Lorimer is innovative or a burden on the competitors. Though it adds an extra layer to the way competitions will be judged, it gives athletes something else to worry about besides the arduous training and strict dieting that they endure all year round. The thing is, if bodybuilders truly want to consider themselves professional then they’ll have to adhere to this new rule and conquer any deficiencies they may have when it comes to posing.

Generation Iron Arnold Sports Festival 2016

It’s very true that bodybuilding isn’t the same as it was during the “Golden Era” but that’s not the real issue at hand. The better question we should be asking is: has this change made the sport better or worse? Are the bigger mass monsters and lack of emphasis on posing routines a decline… or an evolution? Ultimately this is up to the individual. But there is one major fact that can’t be ignored – bodybuilding is bigger than it ever has been. Is this because of the “bigger is better” direction the sport has taken? Perhaps. Perhaps an added scoring system to posing will make the sport even bigger.

It’s hard to say at this point in time but the way this new scoring system is being rolled out is probably the best way to handle it. They aren’t outright upending the way the sport works. They are testing it at (admittedly) big competitions but not the THE most important competitions. If the fans and competitors seem to thrive with this new addition – then perhaps it’s a better direction for the sport.

So if the fans do indeed find more enjoyment from this new addition to the points system, and if the judges themselves find this rule to be even more helpful in deciding a winner, then it’s likely that we could be seeing more and more events emphasizing this method of scoring. If that is taken under consideration then it could change the entire playing field and give bodybuilders with superior posing routines an even bigger chance at defeating the men in the upper tier of the sport. Maybe this will make the sport even bigger.

So far we’ve had three big Arnold Classic events… and to be honest – as whole things don’t feel very different. Many believe that Kai Greene won the Arnold Classic Ohio majorly on his epic posing routine on the final night. But we must remember that the scoring of posing only counts for one third of the judging process. So to say Kai won “solely on his posing routine” isn’t true at all. Cedric was a huge threat… but in the end Kai Greene is the true People’ Champ. A true master contender. And a hard one to beat.

The posing routines have certain shifted in tone – but it’s all pretty slight. We’ll have to wait and see how the IFBB responds by the end of 2016. Will this switch over to other competitions? Will the Olympia of 2017 start scoring posing as well? In the end, we don’t think this will make a whole lot of difference beyond making certain fans happy. The sport overall feels the same with some minor tweaks. And maybe that’s the best thing we could ask for.

Do you think this new scoring criteria will be beneficial or damaging to bodybuilding? Let us know in the comments and forums. Also, be sure to follow Generation Iron on Facebook and Twitter.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT 81 BREAKDOWN: ANTHONY PETTIS VS EDDIE ALVAREZ

alvarez

pettis vs alvarez headerWill the former UFC champ get a big win or will the former Bellator champ play spoiler?

This fight is sure to be a barn burner as former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis takes on Eddie Alvarez. Why should you be excited for this match? Well, in all likelihood the winner of this match up will likely be on the shortlist of potential lightweight title challengers. Both men come to fight and fight hard. Both are durable, exciting strikers, and right now both men are extremely hungry to prove that they’re the best in the world. Coming off of a March 2015 defeat to current champion Rafael dos Anjos, Pettis is looking to rebound in a big way in 2016. His style is primarily striking based which could prove to be Alvarez’s downfall. The flashy former champion is a proficient at throwing a myriad of different kicks thanks to his taekwondo background. pettis kick Besides his kicking game, Pettis also has some polished boxing that allows him to fire off fast and impressive combinations. Even in his loss to dos Anjos, “Showtime” was able to land a decent amount of strikes on the tough Brazilian. The problem he had in that fight was the tactical error of placing himself between the fence and dos Anjos. Pettis can both play both aggressor and counter fighter, the latter of which was his approach in the dos Anjos fight. He tried to play the outside game against a much more aggressive opponent and ended up paying the price for his gamble. Pettis still has some great striking and wicked jiu jitsu off of his back, but if he hopes to come out of this fight on top he’s going to have to keep away from the fence and vary his striking distances from inside the pocket to all the way outside. Standing in the middle zone with Alvarez could prove to be his undoing. Speaking of Alvarez, the former Bellator lightweight champion is faced with yet another tough task within the octagon against Anthony Pettis. Alvarez relies mostly on his boxing and wrestling to get him through fights, but here’s the big issue: Eddie is just a bit too hittable. In almost all of his fights, despite his boxing pedigree, Alvarez has found himself tagged and hurt early and often. It’s the biggest chink in his armor. Eddie has a strong mental game and great condition, recovering from punishment quickly and with a decent stamina to go three hard rounds if not more. The problem in this scenario however is that he’s dealing with a sniper in Anthony Pettis. The former UFC champion doesn’t just hurt you and let up. Once Pettis smells blood, nine times out of ten you’re going to be hitting the canvas. Eddie can perhaps hold Pettis down on the ground for some ground and pound or simply to just secure position and break up the talented striker’s rhythm. The problem with that game plan is that it will require a tremendous amount of energy on Alvarez’s part and like mentioned before, Pettis is capable of attacking with submissions from the bottom. alvarez In a fight that will showcase two of the greats of the lightweight division, expect a back and forth battle to ensure. That is until Alavarez is cracked with a well placed Pettis kick or punch for a devastating KO victory. The Verdict: Anthony Pettis defeats Eddie Alvarez by knockout inside two rounds. WHAT WOULD A BODYBUILDER DO WITH OVER A BILLION DOLLARS?

Generation Iron Billion Dollar Bodybuilder

Generation Iron Billion Dollar Bodybuilder

And The Winning Number is…

Well guys, it looks like the 1.6 billion dollar jackpot has been given to three people – dashing the dreams of millions of hopefuls wishing to become billionaires. Next time we guess (unless you are the lucky 3).

But look, a common complaint of bodybuilders is that there’s not much money in the sport. It’s hard to maintain the hours and nutrition needed to compete in the sport as well as work a 9-5. Though it’s a labor of love, bodybuilding is time consuming and expensive which is why many builders  go the entrepreneurial route.

.

But what if? Forget about three winners – what if you were the ONLY person to win the jackpot? How would you spend 1.6 billion dollars? While everyone has their own unique vision for how they would spend the jackpot, I’m sure as builders we’d have somethings in common. So for good fun, this is what we think a 1.6 billion dollar bodybuilder would spend his money on. Let’s get inside the head of the richest bodybuilder ever lived…

What used to be a drain on the wallet is now pure joy. I would surely get a lifetime supply of everything from protein powders to glutamine, I’d pretty much have my own GNC… come to think of it, that’s a good idea. The Lu Row Is The Secret Weaopon You Should Be Doing Today

Generation Iron Lu Row

An unstoppable exercise.

Finding new ways to put on muscle is a constant for any avid bodybuilder. No one can remain content with their usual routine and expect to see the kind of progress of a pro bodybuilder. It’s all about switching things up, introducing new exercises into your routine in order to see continued progression. Sticking to the same routine can be convenient, there’s no doubting that. But convenience can easily lend itself to stagnation, making your muscles stop its steady progression. When that happens it means it’s time to shake things up a bit.

For many bodybuilders their main focus is on building the front of their bodies, particularly when they first set out on their lifting journey. But experienced bodybuilders understand that what’s worked on in the front must be emphasized on what’s behind as well, particularly the back. If you have a well defined back then it can easily bring together your upper body making for an aesthetic form.

When it comes to back exercises there are tons of different techniques to choose from. The classic dumbbell row will activate the muscles in your back quite nicely. The same can be said for pull ups and lat pull downs. But in the spirit of finding something new, there’s another great exercise for building up your back that you may not be trying.

The Lu Row, named after the Olympic Gold Medalist Lu Xiaojun, is a great exercise to gain an aesthetic back. The movement is a combination of different exercises and technique. Essentially the technique requires the lifter to have a round back, holding the barbell with a snatch grip, pulling from the ground like a deadlift and finally rowing at the end. Sounds a bit complicated I know, but check out Lu’s form as he performs the technique as a warm up before competition.

This exercise is less about the weight and more about the technique and form, so be sure to use a lighter weight when performing it. It’s always good to try something new so give it a shot.

What’s your favorite back exercise? Let us know in the comments and forums. Also, be sure to follow Generation Iron on Facebook and Twitter.

YOEL ROMERO UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR USADA ANTI-DOPING VIOLATION

Yoel Romero

Cleaning out my closet

#2 middleweight Contender Yoel Romero is an olympic wrestler with vicious striking ability, and the power to knockout a horse, a nightmare for anybody. Hi calling card is his freakish athletic ability and his God like physique – leaving many to wonder if he’s just a physical specimen or if he’s getting any extra help? Tuesday’s revelation by the UFC will not help his case however as they were informed by the USADA that Yoel Romero had recently failed an out of competition drug test. Read the official UFC statement below.

The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) informed Yoel Romero of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Romero. Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.

When asked for comment, Yoel Romero’s manager, Malki Kawa, issued the following statement: “We are gathering information and will have no further comment at this time.”

What does this mean for the division? well current champion Luke Rockhold was already skimping on the potential matchup with Romer as he was much more vocal about avenging his loss to Vitor Belfort or a rematch with #1 contender Chris Weidman. With this log in the fire it seems the potential matchup with Romero might be all but squashed as the champion took to twitter to tell the world exactly how he feels about the revelation.

https://twitter.com/LukeRockhold/status/687103871995383808

Ultimately it’s up to Dana White and David Fertita who gets the next crack at the title but the public perception holds much weight in the UFC and the public right now is not on Romero’s side.  UFC vets and fellow middleweights tee off on Yoel Romero below.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT 81 BREAKDOWN: TJ DILLASHAW VS DOMINICK CRUZ

ufc

ufcCome Sunday, who will leave the cage the UFC bantamweight champion?

TJ Dillashaw and Dominick Cruz will lock horns this weekend at UFC Fight Night 81 in a bantamweight title match that fans have been waiting for ever since Dillashaw, the current champion, shocked the world with his upset victory over former champ Renan Barao. Leading up to the fight there has been no shortage of trash talk, particularly by the former champ Cruz. A multitude of injuries have kept Cruz away from the cage for some time now, yet his sole fight within the last three years, a battering of the always tough and durable Takeya Mizugaki, showed that the former champ hasn’t lost a step. TJ Dillashaw has looked pretty impressive as of late beating Renan Barao twice and a game but overmatched Joe Soto. Now that we have some of the particulars out of the way, let’s give a moment to truly appreciate what’s going to be going down this Sunday. TJ freaking Dillashaw versus Dominick freaking Cruz! Ahem. You’ll have to pardon the explosion of emotions I’m feeling at the fact that these two will finally get to fight. Cruz is a master of movement and tactics while Dillashaw’s improved striking has made him a very real knockout threat for anyone at 135 pounds. dillashaw As far as striking goes, this match should be a pleasure to watch with Dillashaw having the power advantage while Cruz has the speed and tactical advantage. Many people are pointing to the power in the champ’s strikes as the decider in this fight, but the reality is that power won’t come into play as much as tactics and footwork. While Dillashaw has adopted a great deal of fancy footwork into his striking arsenal, the truth of the matter is that he hasn’t faced a fighter who moves quite like Cruz. Hell, he borrowed some of the movements that have made Cruz so successful in the past. The problem with that is Cruz may be the superior cage general when it comes to controlling distance. While many onlookers may perceive Dominick Cruz’s movement as some kind of elaborate form of dancing and running, the reality is that Cruz uses footwork and feints unlike anyone else in the UFC. He uses a multitude of feints to get a reaction out of his opponent to see exactly how he should approach them. If he closes the distance and gets aggressive or if he decides to back away, circle and counter strike, it’s all apart of his game plan, one that begins with those feints. He locks in your reactions each time he fakes and files it away into his data banks. Once he has an understanding of what you wish to accomplish, whether that mean counter his movements or move forward with aggression, Cruz is ready for any circumstance. cruz The striking of TJ Dillashaw has improved leaps and bounds since he began training with Duane Ludwig. He can fight in both stances, he sets up his strikes well with jabs and feints of his own, and to top it all off he has decent power in his strikes. Dillashaw has become a smooth striker, yet his speed isn’t exactly the best. He knows how to pick and choose when to attack. But it seems that the biggest flaw in Dillashaw’s game, besides his lack of speed, is his tactics. Dillashaw usually tends to have one mode of fighting: moving forward. His aggression has helped him in the past, but he’s dealing with a fighter in Cruz that knows how and when to blend his techniques together. Dillashaw will have to look for multiple options if he hopes to catch Cruz off guard. The X-Factor in this match up will likely be the wrestling. While Dillashaw may boast an impressive wrestling game allowing very few takedowns, he’s never faced an opponent who blended their wrestling so well into their technique. Remember those feints I mentioned before? Well, depending on how TJ Dillashaw reacts to those feints Dominick Cruz will know exactly when he should switch gears and take his opponent down. If the champion is overly aggressive as he tends to be then he’ll likely find himself on his back at least once or twice during the match. Cruz has some of the best reactive takedowns in the game and uses his unique brand of striking to get his opponents to over commit. That’s when he’ll likely change levels to give Dillashaw something to think about. The champ may resort to going to takedowns himself, but as Dillashaw hasn’t shown as much proficiency for blending his wrestling into his striking, I’m thinking Cruz will see the shots coming a mile away. dillashaw cruz face off Another X-Factor will be whether or not Cruz remains healthy and can go five hard rounds. Other athletes have had ACL injuries and have come back to performing very well, namely Georges St. Pierre and Conor McGregor. For Cruz it will all come down to being well prepared for the war ahead, which I’m thinking he is. The Verdict: Dominick Cruz defeats TJ Dillashaw by decision. LOOKS LIKE FRANKIE EDGAR’S COACH IS TROLLING CONOR MCGREGOR ON INSTAGRAM

Mark-Henry-and-Frankie-Edgar headerMark Henry has a few choice words for Conor McGrgor.

Present day fighting is truly a bizarre thing. It used to be that when you wished to fight an opponent that you simply had to prove your worth in combat, challenge an opponent then put your money where your mouth is. But this is the age of the internet and just like everything else things are changing, even in the fight business. It seems that these days if you want to get a fight you’re better off going on social media websites like Facebook and Twitter in order to get your voice heard. And really, who can blame anyone for taking that approach? In major organizations like the UFC or Bellator it’s all about star power, which translates over to how many tickets you can sell. Sometimes a great barometer for judging if a fight will sell well is if a particular fighter has grown their social media followers to a substantial number. As we move forward in the sport of mixed martial arts we’re beginning to see that your internet presence is just as important to building your brand and raking in the dough as your fighting abilities. With Conor McGregor set to face off against lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 197, the featherweight division is likely to be put on hold while waiting to see how the Irish champ fares in his trip to 155 pounds. From Twitter to Facebook to Instagram, many people have made their voices heard on what they think of the UFC and their actions in backing the featherweight champion. One camp that has been pretty vocal about McGregor’s decision to move up in weight. Mark Henry, coach to Frankie Edgar, has a few choice words for McGregor and his trainer John Kavanagh on Instagram.

What do you think of Mark Henry’s words? Let us know in the comments and forums. Also, be sure to follow Generation Iron MMA on Facebook and Twitter.
