SHOULD GLADIATOR STYLE TOURNAMENTS BE BANNED FROM MMA?

Generation Iron Gladiator Style Tournament

Generation Iron Gladiator Style Tournament

The end of gladiator style?

Let’s face it. UFC runs MMA…right now anyway. If we were going to compare them to wrestling companies UFC would be WWE (not the first time the Dana White, Vince Mcmahon comparison has been made) and Bellator would be TNA. As in all cases where there’s a big and little guy, the little guy must do something creative and new to keep the audience’s attention. Something contraversial that the big guy can’t afford to do because he has too much weight. Too many eyes on him, too many sponsors, too much money to lose. He can manuuver in ways a big guy can’t. It seems that now the smaller companies have found their niche, and that niche is called the MMA tournament. For those of you who aren’t familiar with MMA tournament let’s break it down. It usually happens in one night and for a particular weight class, for example WSOF (World Series of Fighting) will be hosting their light heavyweight tournament this friday – 11/20/15 – in Pheonix Arizona. The basic premises is that the top ranked fighters from that weight class fight each other one on one until only two competitors are left and they then fight for the title. Simple right? Wrong. The complications with these type of tournaments is the potential for serious injury. I can only imagine what it’s like to fight one time a night nevertheless more than three. Popular on the local circuits, if any has ever seen the movie “The Fighter” knows that these things can get quite brutal. Just recently Bellator’s “King Mo” Lawler had to pull out of his championship bout on their “Dynamite” tournament due to rib injury. Besides the risk of injury some people think tournaments aren’t the best way to determine the true champion. For instance, King Mo could’ve been the best fighter on the card but because he sustained a rib injury and didn’t get the time allowed to heal, as he would have with a regular fight, the title goes to lesser fighter. It’s more about the spectacle than crowning an actual champion and is fan oriented not fighting oriented. However, tournaments are nothing new. Japan has been having gladiator type tournament for years and with much success. Bellator and WSOF claim the Japan type tournaments are things of the past however, their tournaments are well paced, organized, and have strict rules that protect the health of their fighters.

“This isn’t like the old days, when there was very little attention given to safety,” Sefo said. “Yes, injuries can happen in the fight, yes, we could end up with an alternate fighting in the main tourney. But the chances of a night that’s memorable and fun are pretty high. You wouldn’t want to run a show like this every night, but the safeguards are in place to do our best to ensure the fighters’ safety.” -Rey Sefo (President of WSOF)

So what’s the verdict? Should tournament style fighting be banned from MMA? I think not. While I’m not the biggest fan of tournament style fighting, (honestly it looks like those guys suffer) if people want to see it and fighters agree to do it, then party on! I would like to hope that if this style of fighting sticks around then safety measures will continue to get better and pacing times will be nailed down to a science as to give these guys a fighting chance (pun intended). More importantly, what do you guys think of tournie style fighting? should it stay in the past, or is it back atlast?

MOTIVATION: TAKE A LOOK AT MMA FIGHTER JON JONES’ INSANE TRANSFORMATION

Generation Iron Jon Jones Shredded

Generation Iron Jon Jones Shredded

The path to shred.

When most people think of weightlifters automatically their minds cook up the image of a musclebound specimen that appears nearly inhuman. They think of a powerlifter or a bodybuilder as the chief examples of what weightlifting has to offer. However all different manner of athletes do indeed lift weights. Outside of powerlifter and bodybuilding athletes from many different sports also implement weightlifting into their strength and conditioning programs in order to be more explosive and powerful for their respective sports. For individuals competing in other sporting endeavors the idea of building muscle and becoming shredded is perhaps the last thing that crosses their mind. Don’t get me wrong, appearing to be cut out of granite is something that many individuals seek to accomplish, but as a professional athlete it’s much less of a priority. In reality it’s all about optimizing performance. If lifting weights would impair an athlete’s ability to perform at the highest levels then I’ve got no doubts that they’d pass on the whole endeavor, but there are plenty of studies and performances out there that would say otherwise. In fight sports you do need flexibility, strength, power, technique, speed, and explosiveness in order to compete with the fighters at the highest levels of the sport. In MMA if you were to look at those ranked at the top of the sport then you would see that many of them aren’t exactly the most massive or shredded like a bodybuilder. You can’t have too much muscle on your frame or risk the possibility of getting exhausted during a fight. But lifting heavy does have it’s benefits and for an athlete to add it to their training could mean the difference between a mediocre or riveting fight performance. The former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones wasn’t a man known for lifting a tremendous amount of weight. In fact his strength and conditioning program was a bit more crossfit oriented (yes the most dreaded training system in the world!!). Ever since his suspension from the sport it seems like Jones has been hitting the weights hard and has taken up a more powerlifting oriented training program. He’s been doing compound movements that emphasize both size and strength the deadlift, the bench, and the squat. Check out the number one pound-for-pound fighter’s shocking body transformation. Generation Iron Jon Jones Transformation If he was trouble before then there’s no doubting that Jones is twice as intimidating now. Muscles don’t always tell the full story, but Jones was already a dangerous fighter. This new emphasis on strength training has likely taken him to the next level.

Could This Elite Athlete Have Died From Too Much Creatine?

Generation Iron Creatine kills

Can creatine kill?

In the world of athletics it’s a fair assessment to say that doping is a pretty frowned upon. There are many organizations put in place to ensure that athletes in certain sports are put through rigorous testing in order to weed out the “cheats” and keep the sport clean. Where bodybuilding is concerned, the topic is never really openly discussed though many who are educated on the subject realize what’s going on behind the scenes. Using anabolics and other products can be a great tool for a bodybuilder to put on additional quality muscle.

But for those bodybuilders looking to build muscle without the use of anabolic steroids there was always a different road they could travel, one that ensured that their bodies could reap the benefits of muscle growth without using substances deemed illegal without a doctor’s prescription. Creatine is a supplement that many athletes across a wide variety of sports use on a consistent basis. It’s been a supplement that has helped athlete both build muscle and have high energy levels throughout a workout.

The recent death of New Zealand rugby player Jonah Lomus has the sporting community talking, particularly Irish writer Neil Francis who is claiming that the athlete’s death is directly related to the taking of creatine. Lomus suffered from chronic kidney disease and Francis says the cause of the Nephrotic Syndrome that the rugby standout was suffering from can be directly linked to his creatine use.

“In the mid-’90s when Creatine became the new wonder supplement, it was embraced by New Zealand rugby. Without engaging in a systematic supplementation programme, the Kiwis at provincial level actively promoted and recommended the product.”

Francis also references the fact that Lomu’s teammate Joely Vidiri also suffered from the same Nephrotic Syndrome. The Irish writer goes on to reference prolific basketball superstar Alonso Mourning as suffering from the same ailment due to his creatine usage.

“Alonso Mourning, a basketball player with the New Jersey Nets and a member of the American dream team in the ’90s, was a big user of Creatine and his doctors went on record as saying that it was a major contributory factor in his acquiring Nephrotic Syndrome.”

But with all these references the biggest problem with the theory is that Lomu never admitted to taking creatine, as if doing so was tantamount to admitting anabolic steroid use. The reality is that until all the facts come out it will be hard to come to a definitive conclusion. But with all this evidence in mind it should at least get athletes to research a bit more about what they put into their bodies.

So what do you think? Is creatine too dangerous of a supplement to take? Let us know in the comments and forums. Also, be sure to follow Generation Iron on Facebook and Twitter.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Ultimate Training Tips

Generation Iron Arnold Schwarzenegger's Training Tips

What does it take to become a legend?

Many people don’t think about it much, but when it comes to building a better you, whether physically or mentally, philosophy is going to play a major role. Now what does that mean exactly? Does it mean you have to be spiritual about your bodybuilding, that you have to have a whimsical chant and mantra you repeat to yourself when your lifting. Maybe. But ultimately it means more than that. So many people like to emphasize the physical aspect of the game while refusing to realize that any athletic endeavor, bodybuilding or not, all of them require impressive mental fortitude and knowledge.

There are tons of different philosophies about training, how and when you should perform something and why. Training methods are as tied in with philosophy as anything else. There’s a reason bodybuilders talk about the mind muscle connection. Belief in a specific program and understanding how one thing affects another is such a vital part of improving your physique, taking it to new heights. It’s a notion that Arnold Schwarzenegger completely agrees with and look how he turned out.

With seven Olympia title wins under his belt and being widely considered the greatest bodybuilder, I think it’s safe to say that Arnold may just know a bit about building a massive physique. But Arnold wasn’t only revered because of his great physique, but his mental strength as well. He was unlike any other bodybuilder that came before or after his reign. His knowledge of bodybuilding along with his a skills in psychological warfare made him into the all time great that’s celebrated to this day.

Arnold teamed up with Bodybuilding.com to offer up some of the training methods and philosophies that shaped him into a bodybuilding champion. This isn’t just a quick 2 minute video brushing through basics – this is an in depth look getting some actual insight from one of the best in the world: Arnold Schwarzenegger. Take a look at the video below of Arnold dropping some knowledge.

Do you agree with Arnold’s philosophies? Let us know in the comments and forums. Also, be sure to follow Generation Iron on Facebook and Twitter.
