2023 New York Pro Preview & Full Competitor List

Preview

The 2023 New York Pro will crown a new champion in the Men’s Open division.

The New York Pro is one of the biggest competitions on the calendar in bodybuilding. The 2023 rendition is set to take place this weekend with nine divisions being on displayed. As usual, the Men’s Open division will headline the event and will crown a new champion this year.

Last year, Blessing Awodibu took home the title and punched his ticket to the 2022 Olympia. Awodibu opted to skip the 2023 Arnold Classic and suffered a quad injury back in February. While Awodibu continues to recover, there will be a new champion crowned at the event.

In 2021, Nick Walker won the New York Pro, beginning what was an extremely successful rookie season. This show has a history of big names earning title and that will continue here. The event is set to begin on Saturday in Teaneck, NJ.

Below, you can find a breakdown of some of the top competitors in the show, along with full rosters that are expected to take the stage.

Men’s Open Favorite: Burton, Charles lead the way

The New York Pro will not featured the top-two finishers from last year. Awodibu and Andrea Presti are not on the roster, meaning that Maxx Charles is the highest returning bodybuilder from last year’s show.

Charles finished third during the 2022 event. This was one of two top-three finishes  from last season, along with the Indy Pro. Charles has experience on this stage and that is important once the competition begins.

Tonio Burton continues to improve and has showed it on social media. The incredible mass of Burton, from the front and back, has been taken up a notch since the Olympia. He has incredible muscle quality and is symmetrical front and back. The overall size and muscularity of his back will go a long way on stage. Burton is no longer a surprise in Men’s Open but one of the favorites in New Jersey.

Burton has competed in two consecutive Olympia competitions. Last year, he win the Legion Sports Fest Pro and was top three in two other shows (California Pro and Chicago Pro).

Men’s Open Dark-Horses: Sutherland, Spear, Bednar ready to compete

Fans will be excited to see Stuart Sutherland make his New York Pro debut. In 2022, Sutherland won the 2022 NPC USA Championships before competing in the Tampa Pro, where he finishes seventh. Sutherland has been sharing physique updates and does not seem to have many weak points.

Just five days out, Sutherland shared that he weighed 253.1 pounds. If there is a knock, there is some conditioning that could be improved in his back but Sutherland seems to have the whole package, making him a threat in the division.

Nathan Spear is an intriguing name to keep an eye on. He continues to add more and more muscle each year. Will be come in big enough to compete for a New York Pro title?

Spear finished eighth during the 2022 Boston Pro and will return to the stage this weekend. On Monday, he shared his current weight at 253 five days out from the show. This was the same weight as Sutherland so it will be interesting to see who comes in looking their best.

Slavoj Bednar is no stranger to the New York Pro stage. He competed at the event last year and was able to make his debut in 2023 as well. Bednar finished 10th during the Arnold Classic Brasil.

Other Divisions

There are three divisions that will see the 2022 champion return to defend their title this year.

Noel Adame was crowned champion in Men’s 212 just one week after finishing as the runner-up during the Indy Pro. In Women’s bodybuilding, Donna Salib will return looking to make it back-to-back victories. She has yet to compete in 2023.

Natalia Abraham Coelho has risen to the top of Women’s Physique. Aside from the New York Pro, Coelho was victorious during the Pittsburgh Pro and MuscleContest Brazil Pro last year. She rode momentum into the Olympia and was able to dethrone Sarah Villegas to win the biggest show of the year. Coelho continued to roll last weekend by winning the 2023 Pittsburgh Pro.
