DEBUNKING THE TOP 5 FOOD MYTHS

Generation Iron Top Food MythsNot every food is as it seems.

We have gone over and over about how important nutrition is to a bodybuilding lifestyle. It’s a tight balance of all the nutritional elements into one perfect diet for maximum muscle gain. There are a lot of do’s and don’ts when it comes to bodybuilding nutrition – but when such black and white statements are made – something gets lost in the middle. Like most things in life, there are never absolutes with anything. This goes for nutrition as well.

We’ve decided to look at some major staple foods of bodybuilding diets and figure out what is fact and what is myth.
.

Eggs and Cholesterol

Let’s start with an easy one. Eggs have and might always be an important part of bodybuilding nutrition. It’s an excellent source of protein, natural, and delicious. But eggs sometimes get a bad rap for bringing up your cholesterol levels. Is this true? Well not really.

Yes, there is cholesterol in eggs – but the dietary cholesterol that you find in them is very different when we are talking about cholesterol in terms of an individual’s health. In truth, the same word “cholesterol” is used to describe two different things: dietary cholesterol (fatty molecules in things like eggs) and body cholesterol (that stuff circulating in your blood that can cause heart problems).

Saturated and trans fats are the true contributors to high cholesterol – whereas the cholesterol you find in eggs does not actually attribute a whole lot towards pumping up that bad stuff in your bloodstream. That isn’t to say you should ignore the cholesterol content in eggs completely – we’re just saying that maybe you shouldn’t be as worried as everyone else is.

Here’s some more info if you’d like to learn more.

Milk Does Your Body Good… Or Does It?

We’ve been told ever since we were little kids that milk is the best thing for your bones. Calcium, calcium, calcium. The C-word that makes for tough bones and happy parents. But what happens when you get older? Should we still be drinking all that milk to keep our bones strong?

Sorry to all the milk lovers out there – but milk is missing one vital nutrient that helps promote bone health: vitamin K. Once our bones stop growing, vitamin K helps keep the bones strong and prevents bone loss.

So where’s a good resource for vitamin K? Dark leafy greens are best. Stuff like kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and scallions all have ample amounts of vitamin K to keep those bones nice and sturdy.

Are Salty Treats Really That Salty?

Always be mindful of sodium – all that salt will do terrible things to our bodies. But you’d be surprised at how much sodium is actually found in stereotypically salty snacks. Things like pretzels or potato chips. We aren’t saying that these are particularly healthy options – but there are far saltier foods that are packed with sodium that you may not expect.

Baked goods. Yes, they don’t taste salty but they are jam packed with processed sodium to make them taste good – even if they don’t taste super salty. So while you are out avoiding all those salty snacks; make sure to double check processed baked goods you eat too. You might be taking in more sodium than you thought.

Meat & Protein

So we all already know that bodybuilders need to take in a lot of protein. For most, this means a lot of meat – beef, chicken, salmon, etc. Many people believe that this is the only way to get the mass amounts of protein required to build muscle mass. But as we have been pointing out, it’s not always so black and white.

Vegetarians often get a bad wrap but the truth is you can find a decent amount of protein in non-animal products. A diet chock full of nuts, legumes, whole grains, and vegetables can include a sufficient amount of protein. Oatmeal mixed in with some hemp seeds can actually range somewhere between 20 and 25 grams of protein. This can actually end up with more protein than some (but not all) meat based products you throw into your meal.

And if you really want to add some protein and delicious taste to your oatmeal – you can add the next item on our list…

Peanut Butter can be a Secret Weapon for Bodybuilders

Peanut Butter is actually a great source of protein – but is often dismissed because of its high calorie content. While it is true that peanut butter has a ton of calories – if you weight out each serving and take careful care of how you balance your diet – peanut butter can provide a ton of great nutrients – and make your protein meals a whole lot tastier.

Some key things: it’s best to get all-natural peanut butter to prevent getting all of that greasy oil you find in commercial peanut butter. It is also can contribute some fiber into your diet – not a lot, but still an added benefit with the protein. On top of that, peanut butter can help reduce risk of heart disease and provide a reasonable source of vitamins and minerals. You can read all about it right here to get the details.

One other word of caution. Peanut butter is not a good source for carbs – which are also important muscle fuel. Like we said, peanut butter could be a great secret weapon to supplement your nutrition – but that doesn’t mean it’s the magic food you can scarf down in mass.

So those are just a few nutrient stereotypes that we decided to look into. There are probably a ton other foods that aren’t as bad or good as the public makes them seem. If you have any important ones you think we missed – let us know in the comments section below. You can also follow us on Twitter and Facebook to become a part of the GI Nation!

MID-WEEK SNACK: LONDON BROIL

Generation Iron London Broil RecipeA juicy lean London broil with sweet potatoes makes for a bodybuilding super-meal.

Get that grill out. It’s time for some outside cooking. Most bodybuilding diets like to focus on protein – which is great, but getting ripped isn’t born solely from protein. As we’ve discussed before, carbohydrates provide the energy needed to power you through all those intense workouts. So today we’re throwing together a simple meal that can not only boost your protein, but also give you some of those carbs that you need. The best part? It tastes delicious too. We’re getting hungry just writing about it.
.

Here are some London Broil facts before we dig into the recipe:

Calories – 140 (4-ounce cut)
Protein- 24g
Carbs – 0g
Fat – 4g
Fiber – 0g

Instructions:

Let’s start with that juicy delicious red meat. Once you get your cut (make sure it’s bright red in color. Brown = spoiled), Turn your grill up to the highest temperature. Cut the steak into 4 – 6 ounce pieces and make sure to cut off all the visible fat – then season both sides with salt and pepper (or your personal choice of spice rub).

Now you can get your sweet potatoes ready. Why sweet potatoes? They are an excellent source of fiber, potaassium, and carry less calories than white potatoes – so if you are looking for extra nutritional value without going overboard on unneeded extra calories. What’s even better is that sweet potatoes are easy to prepare – you can even pop it in the microwave while you are cooking that London Broil – speaking of…

At this point you simply can cook the London Broil to your liking. We prefer to eat it rare. It’s just that animal side of us.

.

We’d love to provide you with more mid-week recipes to help mix up your diet. Let us know if you find these recipes helpful and show us lots of love in the comments so we can keep providing you with tasty meals. And if you have any specific meals you think are fantastic in your diet – feel free to share with us! Maybe your meal will be featured in one of our posts. WISHING RONNIE COLEMAN A SPEEDY RECOVERY

Generation Iron Wishes Ronnie Ronnie Coleman the bestGeneration Iron sends all of our well wishes to Ronnie Coleman.

Ronnie Coleman has been getting into a lot of headlines recently. Yes, as many of you have most likely already heard – Ronnie Coleman went into surgery on July 31st for a double hip replacement and a second surgery on August 13th. We are incredibly happy that the surgeries were successful and Ronnie Coleman is now resting and in recovery.

We here at Generation Iron would like to send all of our well wishes to Ronnie and hope for a speedy recovery. He was The King of bodybuilding and to many was considered the best bodybuilder that had ever lived. Ronnie Coleman is a true inspiration for us all – from the teens who have seen him on stage and aspired to one day reach his size; to his fellow competitors who had to push even harder to try and stack up to his talent.

And while this major surgery will no doubt effect his bodybuilding lifestyle – what it will not effect is his drive, determination, and spirit. He will always be a bodybuilder at heart. That can never be taken away. Ronnie said it best after he announced the success of his first surgery:

“Yeah Buddy, Lightweight Baby, these hip replacements ain’t nothing but a peanut.”

Wishing you all the best, Ronnie!

EXCLUSIVE KAI GREENE INTERVIEW AT “BELIEVE” SEMINAR

Generation Iron Kai Greene InterviewBelief is hard work.

Last weekend on August 9th, Kai Greene held his “BELIEVE” seminar in New York City. Generation Iron was lucky enough to be in attendance and is proud to report that the event was an incredible success! Fans lined up around the block; filled the entire theater; and once the event started – got far more than they ever could have expected. Kai spared no expense providing his fans with six hours packed full of insights, motivation, and personal stories.

Things kicked off with a dramatic opening video in the dark and hushed theater. You could practically feel the excitement bubbling under the surface as the lights rose to reveal Kai on the stage. He looked around with a thought provoking grin, paused, and proudly asked, “What do you believe?” And with that, Kai poured out his soul into a captivating talk about inspiration, motivation, and how to achieve personal success even when the days seem dark.

And the event didn’t stop there. Kai made sure everyone walked away with something in their hands. Prizes were handed out and MuscleMeds goody bags were given to every person in attendance. Not only that, but Kai Greene made sure to meet with every single fan at the event. We’re not talking about “a quick handshake now move along” assembly line meet and greet either. Kai took the time to really meet his fans – photos were taken and conversations were sparked.

For those of you who couldn’t make it to the event – we got you covered. Below you can find a highlight reel of the seminar and after Kai got off stage we were able to talk with him about the success of the event and what inspired him to put together the “BELIEVE” seminar. Check it out.

DISABILITY DOES NOT DISABLE DRIVE

Generation Iron Disability Inspiration BodybuildingThe only limits are the ones we put on ourselves.

Often in life, we are told what we cannot do. We are told there are rules to the world – and while those rules can be broken, it’s very unlikely that you will succeed by breaking them.

This is especially true when tragedy strikes. A crippling accident; a disability; or a medical condition since birth – words like “you’ll never walk again.” Odds that we are told are impossible to overcome.

We’re here to tell you to throw those rules out the window. Because in truth, there is more to the world than rules. There is a very intangible factor that makes us human. Sometimes it’s called motivation, drive, or perseverance. When impossible odds are overcome by digging deep down, rising to the challenge, and obtaining success on your own terms.

We often say bodybuilding is a lifestyle – but what happens when your lifestyle is suddenly or drastically changed? Below are some incredible and inspirational stories of bodybuilders who have broken perceived “rules” and continued to pump iron, flex muscle, and compete in bodybuilding events.
.

Tyler Carron: Bodybuilder Without Legs

In January 2007, Tyler and his friend were replacing a flat tire on the side of the road when tragedy struck. A car suddenly crashed and pinned the two of them. Tyler lost both of his legs.

But instead of falling into despair, Tyler discovered a new found happiness and positivity – because he realized that he was lucky to be alive. He was soon introduced to bodybuilder Michael Alexander, who got Tyler on a weightlifting regimen that put him on the path towards bodybuilding. He has competed in the Warrior Classic and took home the “Heart of a Warrior” award for his determination and inspiration.

While balance might be harder for him on the machines – he simply accepts the challenge and pushes forward. He claims it makes him feel good about himself. It gives him purpose. He stared life right in the eyes and decided that he wouldn’t be a victim – that he wouldn’t be told what he couldn’t do.

Daniel Moses Inspires the Masses

Generation Iron Daniel Moses motivation bodybuildingPhoto courtesy of  The Hinckley Times.

Sixty year old Bob Dawson from Hinckley, UK recently grabbed his third Mr. Universe title – and he claims to have gotten his motivation from a man named Daniel Moses. Daniel was born 30 weeks premature and soon diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. By age 11, Daniel had extensive surgery on his femur, tendons, and foot causing him to lose most of the strength in his legs.

Then he met Bob Dawson. With Bob’s support and coaching, Daniel was able to train towards a guest spot at the IBFA British Championships. Not only did he make it to the British Championships – he totally kicked butt and as a result is now in demand to appear in a slew of bodybuilding championships around the country – including the British Finals. He has also competed in the disabled class at the Hercules Olympia in which he took home a victory.

Bob was so inspired by Daniel’s success that he decided to head back into the Mr. Universe competition and ended up winning his third title.

This story proves that regardless of age or disability, nothing can compare to the strength of willpower and the human spirit. Not only was Daniel able to continue his love of bodybuilding – he also inspired others, like Bob, to look beyond their perceived limitations, rise up, and find personal success.

If you want to read the entire story, you can check it out here and get inspired.

Barbie Thomas: Fitness Unarmed

Barbie Thomas has been inspiring thousands of people across America. She is a female bodybuilder and mother-of-two. Oh, and did we forget to mention that she also has no arms? Barbie lost her arms to a horrific accident when she was two years old. She climbed up onto an electrical transformer, grabbed the wires, and was shocked until her arms were burnt to the bone.

Now 37, Barbie says that she can do anything. Except she uses her feet. She brushes her teeth with her feet, texts with her feet, and even drives with her feet. Not only is Barbie able to do what the average person can – she also challenges herself and pushes her body to the limit through bodybuilding.

While she got some funny looks when she first started competing in 2003, she has become an athlete just like the rest of the competitors – and still competes to this day. Her greatest victory came in 2012 when, for the first time, she placed ahead of someone else despite the fact that she had a few less muscles than her fellow competitor.

She also has confidence and a sense of humor. She runs her own website called Fitness Unarmed and occasionally writes in her blog aptly titled Footnotes.

When Barbie first had her accident the doctors told her she may not live – and if she did, that should would most likely be a vegetable for the rest of her life. Now she stands on a stage flexing her muscles like anyone else. She grew, she adapted, she ignored the “rules” that were given to her and made a successful life for herself.

Bodybuilding is a lifestyle – and no matter what happens, that lifestyle is yours to live. No one and nothing can take that away from you.

Barbie said it best:

“The only limitations are the ones you put on yourself. Everyone has limitations and handicaps in some way or another – mine are just more visible than yours maybe.”

– Barbie speaking to Mirror UK

R.I.P. MIKE MATARAZZO (1965-2014)

Generation Iron Mike Matarazzo RIPMike Matarazzo will be missed my many the world over.

We are very sad to report that just yesterday on August 17th, 2014, long time family friend Mel Chancy announced on Facebook that Mike Matarazzo had died in the Stanford hospital while waiting for a heart transplant.

The Former IFBB Pro bodybuilder had been suffering from heart problems ever since he had open heart surgery in 2004. He was admitted into intensive care due to heart complications and unfortunately passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2014. He was 48 years old.

Mike Matarazzo was a former boxer who later transitioned into the sport of bodybuilding. Matarazzo first competed in the Mr. Olympia in 1991 – his best placing being 9th back in 1998. He was considered by many to be the most likeable bodybuilder of all time. A man filled with friendly energy who always took the time to bond with his fans. Throughout his entire career, Matarazzo had always expressed his sincere love and adoration for his fans. They never ceased to amaze him and he never ceased to amaze us.

Matarazzo was forced to retire after his open heart surgery. His last time competing in pro bodybuilding was the 2001 Mr. Olympia. He placed 21st. Matarazzo was last residing in Modesto, California up until his death.

Everyone here at Generation Iron would like to offer condolences to the friends and family of Mike Matarazzo. He will be sorely missed – and undoubtedly tons of love will outpour from the many fans he was able to touch in his time on this earth. Rest in peace.

.

1. Top 10 Workout Songs

3. Steroids & Bodybuilding

Let’s face the facts. Steroids have been and always will be a big part of bodybuilding at the pro level. The real question isn’t “why is it not banned?” but should be, “why isn’t it part of the conversation?” In this article we talk about how, for the sport of pro bodybuilding to be taken even more seriously, it needs to start embracing this aspect of the sport.

4. Embarrassing Gym Moments

Even the best have awkward moments of embarrassment – and when you spend as much time in the gym as bodybuilders do, you probably have had a couple of embarrassing moments while working out. We throw together a list of some top gym blunders and how to recover from them.

5. Steve Reeves Workout

Steve Reeves was often considered a man of perfect proportion. While he wasn’t anywhere near as large as some of his contemporaries – he had one many would consider the “classic” bodybuilding look. We break down his old school routine to see if it stacks up for your workout.

6. Protein Snack: Lean Beef Recipe

Looking for something to add to your bodybuilding diet? Look no further! We did a little research and pulled up a lean beef stir fry that would be a fantastic source of protein for your workout needs.

7. Ben Pakulski Cardio Workout

Get some cardio into your workout the B-Pak way. What way is that? Why, by pushing your car uphill in a parking lot of course! Ben Pakulski recently posted a video showing his favorite way to build muscle and push cardio at the same time.

8. Protein 101

Protein is the keystone for any bodybuilding diet. But there are also a few misconceptions on how to effectively implement it into your diet. We explore the basics of protein and put it all into one place so you can easily get a refresher – or a crash course – in what it takes to build muscle through protein.

9. Bodybuilder Helps Elderly

Martin Luther King Addo is a bodybuilder from West Africa who moved to the state to try and be just like Arnold Schwarzenegger. While he may have never reached Schwarzenegger level of stardom – he has made a big impact to the NYC community. How? He provides bodybuilding motivation and training for the elderly. You can read all about how he changes there seniors’ lives right here!

10. Kai Greene Guest Pose

Kai Green officially announced through his Facebook and Instagram that he will be guest posing at the East Coast classic in November. Exciting news for everyone on the east coast who want to catch a glimpse of The Predator’s body in person.
