Brick breaking gone wrong.

After beginning in America, Simon Cowell’s ‘Got Talent’  TV contest has found it’s way around the world. One country with it’s own version is Sri Lanka. This week, one of their contestants contestant has gone viral after a martial arts performance, or rather a failed one.

Sudarshana Deshappriya’s act appeared to be a traditional demonstration. For generations, karate practitioners have broken various materials to prove the power of their strikes and durability of their body.
Sudarshana began with assistants breaking layers of bricks over his arms while doing the splits. Then he attempted to smash tiles over his own head.

As a result, he fell backwards and had to be raised by his assistants. But he wouldn’t stop, proceeding to the front of the stage to attempt another tile break. Actor Jackson Anthony hit his judge buzzer before Sudarshana dropped into a split attempting to smash the stack with his elbow. He failed badly, and Jackson then called for him to stop.

The judges tried to comfort and reassure Deshappriya, and he actually advanced to the next round, garnering applause for his sacrifice and perseverance. It’s unclear whether or not this concussion was real. Shows like this are hardly above faking contestant accidents to improve ratings. The tiles themselves did not look very solid, and the whole thing smacks of fake martial arts combined with fake TV.

In any case, with the rise of tournament martial arts competition like the UFC. So called ‘fake’ or at least exhibition martial arts are becoming more and more showy to compete in their own right. This spit is similar to what happened to wrestling in England, which gave birth to in Olympic freestlye wrestling and what we know as pro-wrestling.
