Stim-Free Pre-Workout Review: Alpha Wolf Nutrition Uncaged

Everyone wants craves energy for their workouts.

Does your early morning workout not jive with your night owl habits? Do you need a boost after a long day at the office? A pre-workout supplement can help.

Caffeine has been the go-to for pre-workout fuel for decades but there are two issues with the popular stimulant:

Stimulant vs Stim-Free Pre-Workout Supplements

You can build up a tolerance to stimulants like caffeine. Long-time coffee drinks know only too well that it takes at least two cups of Joe to get the day started. Same thing happens with caffeine-based supplements.

Even worse, the benefits dwindle over time. Remember your first scoop of pre-workout powder or cup of coffee? Your mental game was on point. And you felt like you had another hour left in you after the workout.

But inevitably, the more you use a stimulant, the less obvious its benefits. So, what do you do? Take more of it.

You can see how this begins a vicious cycle that taxes the adrenal system without the same level of reward.

Stim-free pre-workouts, on the other hand, provide you with steady levels of energy without the risk of building up a tolerance. Best of all, no jitters or crash.

Alpha Wolf Nutrition Uncaged Ingredients

Alpha Wolf Nutrition doesn’t believe in proprietary blends or mystery labels. You know exactly what and how much of every ingredient you’re taking. Here is what you’ll find in every serving of Uncaged.

Dextrose (12 g)

When you eat a carbohydrate source, your body breaks it down into glucose and this raises your blood sugar. When glucose is produced from corn, it’s referred to as dextrose. Glucose and dextrose are the same on a biochemical level but there are several reasons that dextrose is the superior choice to fuel your workouts.

Instant Energy: Dextrose doesn’t need to be broken down and converted like glucose does so it’s readily available as an energy source almost instantly.

Goes Where It’s Needed: Most forms of glucose from food will go right to the liver to replenish glycogen stores. Dextrose, on the other hand, goes right to your muscles glycogen supply. [1]

L-Citrulline DL Malate (2:1) (8 g)

A non-essential amino acid, L-citrulline has been shown to provide several fitness benefits including improved endurance. The addition of malic acid improves bioavailability and energy production, making it the preferred choice over traditional L-citrulline.

Increases Nitric Oxide: A powerful vasodilator, nitric oxide is responsible for that classic muscle pump feeling. Nitric oxide can improve workout performance and recovery. Once ingested, L-citrulline is converted into L-arginine, the precursor for nitric oxide. [2]

Better Workouts: One study found that subjects taking L-citrulline had a marked improvement in their endurance levels and cycling time. [3]

Creatine HCL (3g)

Creatine is one of the classic supplements of fitness. Once a luxury in the world of bodybuilding, science has revealed that creatine is ideal for most fitness populations. The addition of the hydrochloride group (HCL) to creatine dramatically improves absorption and bioavailability.

Fuel in the Tank: Creatine is converted into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the preferred fuel source for muscle tissue. Creatine supplementation increases ATP levels, which can support muscular performance for a longer period. In other words, you’ll have noticeably more fuel in the tank during workouts. [4]

Superior Results: Continuing with the point above, creatine has been shown to improve workout performance, leading to better results. From sprinting to muscle building, creatine keeps you in the game longer, ensuring you’ll hit the necessary muscular stimulus for strength and growth. [5]

GlycerSize Glycerol Powder 65% (2 g)

When added to food, glycerol is a sweet-tasting moisture preserver. As a supplement, it’s an important tool for muscular fuel.

Better Workouts: Studies show that glycerol benefits both aerobic and anaerobic workouts. Sprinting would be an example of an aerobic workout while weightlifting is a type of anaerobic workout. [6]

Pair it with Creatine: The combination of creatine and glycerol can dramatically enhance the benefits of both. This includes improved performance and enhanced post-workout recovery. [7]

Nitrosigine Arginine (1.5 g)

A popular nitric oxide-boosting supplement, nitrosigine arginine is the combination of L-arginine and inositol. L-arginine has notoriously low levels of bioavailability… until it’s paired with inositol. By pairing the two, you dramatically increase the absorption and usability of L-arginine, resulting in the following benefits:

Supports Performance: Studies have consistently shown that nitrosigine arginine is incredibly effective at promoting workout performance. [8]

Pair It with L-Citrulline Malate: When nitrosigine arginine is combined with L-citrulline malate, athletic performance significantly increases while perceived post exercise soreness decreases. [9]

Potassium (from Nitrosigine) (60 mg)

Did you know that healthy levels of potassium are required for basic muscular processes, especially during exercise? You can think of potassium as the glue that holds Uncaged together. It complements all the other ingredients on this list and ensures they can do what they’re meant to do.

Combat Fatigue: Aside from supporting the other ingredients in Uncaged, potassium also helps to reduce intra-workout fatigue. [10]

Pre-Workout Review: Alpha Wolf Nutrition Uncaged

My usual pre-workout supplement routine usually consists of caffeine or yohimbine but I decided to see what a non-stim could provide as far as increasing energy and enhancing performance.

I took Uncaged around 30 minutes before my usual CrossFit workouts, which I attend four times per week. I’ll discuss how Uncaged stacked up against caffeine in my four areas of focus during a workout:

Immediate Response: By the time I stepped into my local box, I could feel a difference in how prepared and excited my body was to get started. There wasn’t the tingle that’s common with beta alanine; rather, I felt really ready to go. When we jumped into the warm-up, my body was only too happy.

Strength: As far as the amount of weight I was lifting, there was no difference between Uncaged and my normal stim-based supplement. However, there was a clear difference in how many repetitions I was able to complete. With my stimulant pre-workout, I’d usually top out right around my desired repetition target. But with Uncaged, I was consistently able to go above and beyond my target number with the same weight.

The Pump: This is where I noticed the greatest difference with Uncaged. There was a substantial increase in the pump I felt throughout the workout. Glancing down a few times during upper body workouts, I found that I was more vascular than usual. I even got compliments regarding how pumped my arms looked.

Overall Energy: Admittedly, I didn’t feel the same rush as I do with a stimulant, but I definitely had long-lasting energy. And that’s the key point here: While I didn’t have the caffeine-based boost, I also didn’t succumb to the usual caffeine crash. Uncaged provided a steady supply of usable energy that lasted the entire workout – not until the halfway point.

Who is Uncaged Ideal For?

A stim-free pre-workout supplement can be a welcome change of pace for most gym goers, but these people will really notice the difference:

Sensitive to Simulants: Does a sip of coffee result in anxiousness and jitters? A stimulant-free pre-workout gives you all the benefits of caffeine – performance, focus, and recovery – with none of the drawbacks.

Long-Time Stim Users: If you’ve burnt out your adrenal system with a daily dose of 500 mg of caffeine, a stim-free supplement will be a welcome change of pace. You can reset your system while continuing to improve your workouts.

New to the Pre-Workout Supplement Scene: If you’re new to supplements, don’t fall into the trap of the caffeine-loaded pre-workouts that promote a dependency in order to perform. Stim-free pre-workouts help you crush your workouts without the reliance on caffeine or other stims.
