Anderson Silva Drug Test Sample Yielded Synthetic Testosterone And More

We finally know what Anderson Silva was taking.

A new report from Brazilian MMA outlet Combate, has revealed that Former UFC Middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva tested positive for synthetic testosterone (methyltestosterone) and an unspecified diuretic, in a sample collected in October 2017.

Anderson Silva, 42, is currently awaiting a hearing with USADA. Although this is not Silva’s first failed test, he expects to be judged as a first-time offender. His last failed sample was collected and adjudicated by the Nevada State Athletic Commission in 2015. At that time, Silva had tested positive for androsterone, drostanolone, temazepam, and oxazepam before and after his bout against Nick Diaz. The failed tests landed him a year suspension, thanks to the explanation of a mistakenly taken Viagra.

Anderson’s managers have stated he will retire if handed a sentence that exceeds two years. But if USADA does take into account The NSAC offense, Silva is looking at at least four. Silva’s last appearance in the Octagon was an underwhelming but victorious performance against Derek Brunson. His most recent win prior to that was in 2012, although he has been facing stiff competition and has never been stopped in a non-title fight loss.

So it looks as if Silva’s days in the UFC may be coming to an end. Perhaps more importantly, these failures cast a pall over his spectacular career – somewhat less so if you consider that basically all of his opponents had been using steroids as well.

The Spider does still have one potentially spectacular fight left – a boxing match with Roy Jones Jr. The two greats have been throwing the idea around for ages, but when Silva was champion Dana White kept a strong leash on his fighters. Now, will all the cross boxing and MMA promotion – this fight may just be in the works. It would be a fantastic starter for the UFC’s venture into boxing promotion.

That is exactly the type of event that would suit Anderson Silva. He loves to fight against high level opponents on big shows for big checks, even if the fight is one he’ll likely lose. Anyone interested in Jones’s status should watch him fight in his hometown of Pensacola Friday night on UFC Fight Pass.
