A Bali fitness community mourns the loss of a well respected bodybuilder and trainer after tragic accident.

A Bali-based bodybuilder and personal trainer has tragically lost his life during a freak accident at the gym while performing a back squat. Justyn Vicky was attempting to squat 210 kgs when the accident occurred.

At 33 years old, Justyn Vicky was entering the prime of his life. An avid bodybuilder and personal trainer who was popular in the Bali region, Vicky was known for his incredible physique and immense bodybuilding knowledge. Friends and family now mourn the passing of the young fitness enthusiast who tragically lost his life to this freak accident.

Tragic Accident

The incident occurred at The Paradise Bali, a fitness center located in Sanur on July 17, 2023. Justyn Vicky was a well-known trainer at the gym and was performing a routine workout at the time of his death. While attempting to perform a back squat, Vicky would end up suffering a severe neck injury that would claim his life. The whole incident was captured on video showing the tragic accident in full.

Justyn Vicky attempted a 210 kg back squat with a spotter present just behind him. While at the bottom of the lift, Vicky appeared to struggle with the immense weight on his shoulders. Vicky was unable to bail on the weight in time and eventually fell forward with the bar still across his back as it rolled onto the back of his neck. The immense weight of the bar severely injured the bodybuilder’s neck in the tragic accident.

The incident would leave the bodybuilder with a broken neck and damaged nerves which connected to his heart and lungs. Despite undergoing emergency surgery, the doctors could not save Vicky’s life.

Mourning Vicky’s Loss

Many family and friends in the Bali community shared their condolences for the loss of the beloved trainer and athlete. One such individual was Gede Sutarya, also known as Kang Gede, who spoke of how friendly and generous Justyn Vicky was.

“Mas Vicky was a good person, polite, and sociable,” said Kang Gede. “He always shared knowledge about the gym. He also advised friends at the gym to be cautious and not exceed their capabilities during training. Only we ourselves can measure our own abilities. May Mas Vicky rest peacefully in the embrace of God and find a worthy place.”

As the community mourns the passing of Justyn Vicky his friend and colleague I Made Gede Purnamayasa recently shared tips on how to perform the back squat safely. Hopefully, this kind of safety awareness will help prevent another tragic accident like this from occurring.
