Following Big Ramy Olympia Win, Egyptian Preacher Forbids Bodybuilding

Egyptian Preacher Abdullah Rushdy has issued a fatwa prohibiting bodybuilding weeks after Big Ramy’s Olympia victory and homecoming celebration

Big Ramy is now a two time Mr. Olympia champion – which is a big deal in and of itself. But this has been especially celebrated in his home country of Egypt. Despite this, it seems that some have a problem with the very sport Big Ramy has dedicated his life towards. An Islamic preacher Abdullah Rushdy has recently spoken out and issued a fatwa against bodybuilding.

While this is not a law or legally binding decision, a fatwa is very serious within the Islamic community. A fatwa is a ruling made by Islamic scholars who interpret rules and determine what would go against Islam. Bodybuilding has been seen as troublesom, particularly for women, in Islamic communities in the past. It would seem Big Ramy’s win has sparked negative attention towards the sport again.

Abdullah Rushdy explained his fatwa decision on Twitter and in more detail on Facebook. While he did not mention Big Ramy by name – his statements come just weeks after Ramy’s victory at the Mr. Olympia and a well documented homecoming celebration in Egypt shortly thereafter.

Rushdy explains that bodybuilders show sensitive parts of the body, known as Awrah. This is interpreted as anything between the naval and knees for men. The traditional bodybuilding trunks in Men’s Open obviously showcases this area openly. Due to this, Rushdy believes bodybuilding should not be practiced by those following Islam:

“Men are prohibited from participating in bodybuilding championships and showing intimate parts, which should be covered according to the Sharia,” Rushdy wrote.

Abdullah Rushdy continued in more detail on Facebook:

“I am not saying no to sports, but the rules of the Sharia ought to be respected when doing so… Awrah for men includes the body parts between their navel and knees, and it’s the entire body for women, except for their face and hands,” Rushdy said.

“I advise young men not to practice bodybuilding because of this and women should not participate in any competition that requires them to show parts of their bodies.”

While Abdullah Rushdy’s statements and issued fatwa is a very big deal – it’s not representative of all of Egypt. This is clear in the celebration videos that have gone viral upon Big Ramy returning to Egypt. It is also unclear whether or not Rushdy’s statements will affect Ramy’s personal outlook on bodybuilding. But Rushdy’s statements coming so close to an Egyptian bodybuilders iconic pro bodybuilding win has created a mini storm of attention for the time being.

If anything, this just further proves that Big Ramy’s rise to prominence in pro bodybuilding has had a massive impact for the Egyptian community. While bodybuilding might not be a mainstream sport in the United States – it is a deeply passionate sport across the globe. Ramy has stated that he will continue to reign as Olympia for years to come – it will be interesting to see if this brings more controversial attention in the years ahead.
