Luz Maria Barrera Agaton was found unresponsive in a pool while on vacation.
Bikini bodybuilder Luz Maria Barrera Agaton died on Sunday morning while on vacation with her family.
Barrera, who was 32 years old, was staying at the Coco Resort & Villas Hotel in Motul, which is west of Cancun, with her boyfriend and multiple relatives. According to reports, her body was found at the bottom of the pool on Sunday morning. Emergency services were immediately called but paramedics could not do much.
Police are in the midst of an ongoing investigation and have not ruled out foul play yet.
According to local reports, there have been banners hung outside her gym in Merida with threatening messages. This happened just two weeks ago. Barrera Agato did not inform the police of these banners and it is unknown if this is associated.
Luz Maria Barrera Agaton’s Fitness Career
Barrera Agaton enjoyed a passion for fitness over the course of her life and was able to turn it into a career.
On stage, she built a physique that was competitive in the Bikini division. She began in 2017 when she finished fourth at the aMateur Olympia in Bikini. That same year, she won the Fitness title at the Mister Mexico contest. The next year, she took part in the Mexico Supershow Pro Qualifier.
Barrera Agaton’s career kept moving in the right direction and it reached a new high in 2024. That year, she won the Amateur Olympia competition before being crowned Queen of the Motul Carnival.
Luz Maria Barrera Agaton went onto open Golden Gyms while also being a member of the Yucatan State Bodybuilding & Fitness Association. She even sponsored her own bodybuilding competitions in Motul.
President of the AFFEY Evangelina Cime Mezquita shared comments on Facebook following the incident:
“She was a woman who brought the name of Yucatan to the international stage. She was an organizer, sponsor, businesswoman, friend, and above all, a very humane woman. Those of us who had the good fortune to know her loved her very much.”
