Canelo Alvarez Could Rematch Gennady Golovkin In 2018

Canelo Alvarez is looking to run it back against Gennady Golovkin.

After a great fight between two of the best pound for pound boxers in the world, the scorecards came in for the Canelo Alvarez versus Gennady Golovkin showdown and all in attendance were shocked. The fight was close and two judges acknowledged that fact with a scorecard of 115-113 in favor of Gennady Golovkin with another reading 114-114, a draw. The third scorecard however proved to be the most alarming with a score of 118-110 in favor of Canelo Alvarez, implying that he absolutely dominated the fight. In the end, the fight was ruled a split draw and left a sour taste in everyone’s mouths.

But now it seems that the first fight will be corrected.

With a rematch clause in his initial contract, it appears that Canelo Alvarez is looking to enforce it in hopes of battling Gennady Golovkin in 2018. While date is being set, the likelihood of this fight occuring in May or June is a safe bet. The rematch would certainly make a ton of money and give fight fans as well as the two boxers involved some sense of closure. That is, unless they want to make a third match up.

I talked about the results on a recent podcast with a fellow boxing enthusiast. Check it out for some insight into the scoring of this controversial match.

How do you think a rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin would play out?
