Canelo Alvarez vs GGG Rematch Officially Cancelled

Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is off.

Since failing two drug tests weeks ago, fans have wondered if the Canelo Alvarez, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin would still be contested. Now it appears that the rematch has been confirmed cancelled.

After being suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Canelo Alavrez has since withdrew from the rematch that was scheduled for May 5, Cinco de Mayo. Representation for GGG stated that he would remain on the card last month in the wake of the Canelo suspension. While such a stance is hopeful at best, it would be extremely difficult to imagine who would be willing to challenge the monster that is Gennady “GGG” Golovkin on such short notice.

Frustrated by this turn of events, Canelo Alvarez addressed the media, hoping to share his thought process at this time.

“I am sad and feel powerless that this fight cannot happen now,” said Alvarez. “I have nothing to hide. I want to be transparent in this process. I will do whatever I need to do to demonstrate I have never (deliberately) taken this substance.

“I have always operated as a clean fighter. I have always taken clean substances. I respect the sport unconditionally and would never do anything to tarnish something I have worked so hard for and given so many sacrifices for.

“It saddens me that people are accusing me of doing something improper. From here on out, I will take increased precautions to ensure this will never happen again. I am ready for what comes in the future.”

Alvarez is hoping that his cooperation with the Nevada State Athletic Commission will help to mitigate his suspension, hoping for a six month ban. It’s certainly going to be a blow to his legacy and will likely earn him the ire of many boxing fans.
