Carl Weathers, ‘Rocky’s’ Apollo Creed Actor, Passes Away At 76

Carl Weathers made a name for himself on the big screen in many muscle-bound roles.

Actor Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the first four films of the Rocky franchise, has died at 76 years old.

Weathers passed away on Thursday and the news was shared on Friday in a statement from his family.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers. He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024.

Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

Weathers became known for his role as Apollo Creed, taking on Rocky Balboa in the first Rocky movie in 1976 for the heavyweight title. He returned in Rocky II for a title rematch with Rocky. His third appearance was to fight Clubber Lang, who was played by Mr. T. Weathers’ final appearance in the Rocky franchise was Rocky IV where he was killed in the ring during a battle with Ivan Drago.

The Career of Carl Weathers

Carl Weathers began his acting career at a young age and enjoyed five decades in show business, playing some legendary roles during that span.

Aside from Rocky, Weathers was also featured in The Mandalorian and Action Jackson. Weathers played many muscle-bound roles and got to work with some incredible actors and fitness icons. This list begins with Arnold Schwarzenegger, who Weathers worked with for 1987’s Predator.

Carl Weathers also became known for his range as an actor. He showed his comedic side laying Chubbs Peterson in Happy Gilmore. While filming the movie, where Weathers starred alongside Adam Sandler as a professional golfer coaching Happy, he suffered two fractured vertebrae during a fall stunt. Weathers also voiced Combat Carl in Toy Story 4.

While Weathers starred in many roles, he also appeared in guest roles, especially early in his career. These appearances include Good Times, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Starsky and Hutch.

Carl Weathers was an accomplished actor that left an impact across many genres during his career. Many of his roles will live on forever in cinematic history.
