Complaint Affidavit Released On The Volkan Oezdemir Arrest

Number 2 ranked UFC Heavyweight Volkan Oezdemir was arrested in Fort Lauderdale on November 18th and charged with aggravated battery.

The charges stemmed from an alleged August 12th altercation between Oezdemir and another man at a bar, in which Oezdemir has been accused on inflicting ‘substantial injuries.’

Today the Fort Lauderdale Police Department provided Bloody Elbow with a copy of a complaint affidavit that details Oezdemir’s arrest.

According to the affidavit, Oezdemir was recognized by detectives, who knew there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The detectives then made contact with Oezdemir, who provided his name and date of birth. These details were confirmed by DAVID (driver and vehicle identification database). According to the Sun Sentinel, the original incident occurred between Oezdemir and an individual named Kevin Cohen, who was left with swelling and cuts to his head.
One report included video of Volkan Oezdemir appearing before a judge. In the video, Oezdemir’s attorney Bruce A. Zimet claims that, “all this is, is a bar room fight where the alleged victim got punched, fell on the ground, [and] apparently hit his head and cut his head.” Zimet also claims that Oezdemir was at the bar with his fiancee and that someone had approached her while Oezdemir was in the restroom.

In the video, a prosecutor can be heard claiming that the alleged victim he was ‘sucker punched’ and suffered swelling and a laceration that required staples.

The video also shows Oezdemir being granted bail under the condition that he surrender his passport and avoid all contact with the alleged victim.

Oezdemir, a citizen of Switzerland, has a professional MMA record of 15-1. In September it was announced that Oezdemir was the likely next challenger to UFC Lighteavyweight champion Daniel Cormier’s throne. A bout between Oezdemir and Cormier had been reportedly targeted for UFC 220 in January. Although that bout was in question following the incident. Oezdemir’s coach Henri Hooft has filmed him back in training and it appears he still has the green light from the UFC

Of course Volkan Oezdemir is presumed innocent until proved guilty.
