With less than the allotted 140 characters Twitter allows for posting, Conor McGregor was able to turn the world on its head with his alleged retirement. Ever since Tuesday April 19, the MMA world has been waiting with baited breath to see whether McGregor’s retirement was some kind of publicity ploy or a legit declaration of his intentions to leave the sport behind. It was shocking, alarming, unexpected, and one of the boldest moves pulled in the sport’s short history. Well for all those curious as to why McGregor said what he did last Tuesday then you’re in luck. Conor McGregor has released a statement on his his official Facebook page that is both alarming, enlightening, and should surely give fans and pundits something to pick at for quite some time. Though some will try to say McGregor is being selfish in his statement and decisions, you have to consider the fact that he has to the right to. The thing that many fans and observers don’t seem to realize is that though cage fighting isn’t as barbaric as gladiators fighting to the death in the coliseum, these men and women are putting their lives on the line to prove something not only to themselves but the world at large. If McGregor wants some alone time to prepare for the biggest fight in his career then shouldn’t he have that right, especially after all the exposure, money, and entertainment he’s brought to the sport?
