Keep your clothes on…

While everyone’s talking about the McGregor vs. Mayweather possible mach-up, we’ve got to remember throughout the hysteria, this fight is still a long shot.  49-0 boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently made headlines by releasing a statement to “Fight Hype” stating that the rumored bout between him and MMA featherweight champion Conor McGregor was “very possible”. Not only is it possible, but the recently retired boxer said that he in fact started the rumors. https://youtu.be/SCdBb_fT5z4

“It’s possible. It’s possible. There was a name that was shot at me. But the rumors that y’all have been hearing [are] the rumors I started,” Mayweather said in video posted by FightHype.com. “It may not be a rumor. Keep your fingers crossed. It may be a boxer versus an MMA fighter. So we just don’t know.”

While he didn’t mention the MMA fighter by name, we can be sure who he’s talking about. The two have recently traded insults through the media and Floyd Mayweather has never minced words with his opinion of MMA as a sport. So the real question now is, is this fight even possible? While definitely plausible, it’s highly unlikely. First we would have to suspend our disbelief that the Boxing commision would sanction a fight between possibly the greatest fighter of all time and a man with no professional boxing bouts to his name. Then we would have to ignore the notorious history of the UFC and their ironclad contracts. Ask Randy Couture, getting out of a UFC contract is second only to escaping from a Cambodian prison. Ultimately the decision would come down to Lorenzo Fertita and Dana White. If the CEO and president could be swayed by the fights economic potential as well as a no lose situation for Conor  McGregor’s status, this becomes a very possible matchup. Joe Rogan on his recent episode of “JRE” says it best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTh-0wC1bzo

“If enough money gets thrown the UFC’s direction, the UFC might look at it this way, here’s a pragmatic way to look at it: ‘We can still make a lot of money with Conor McGregor. We can still make a lot of money with Conor McGregor in an MMA fight. We can still make a lot of money if Conor rematches Nate Diaz’ which I hear they’re trying to make happen as well, that’s what the rumor’s been. But is he gonna beat the best guys in the world now? After Nate Diaz boxed him up and choked him out, is that going to happen again? If that does happen again, how much will that deflate his value on the open market? If you’re playing a game of chess, not looking at it in terms of a guy’s career as an MMA fighter but looking at it as a game of financial chess, how do you move your piece?

But back to reality here. Dana White has explicitly shot down fight rumors calling the potential matchup a “tabloid story.” As far as sport – Conor McGregor would get absolutely killed in the ring against Floyd Mayweather. The match would be purely spectacle. While McGregor is the bigger fighter and a knockout artist in his own right, Floyd Mayweather has seen everything under the sun on the biggest stage in boxing. He makes knockout fighters look like they’ve got their shoelaces tied together. If this fight were to realistically happen, Conor’s only saving grace is that his movement may be awkward and that the undefeated welterweight boxer (39) is now ageing. These are still both insane long shots. Let’s be real, if the the fight were to be made, Conor McGregor surviving  to the ending bell would be a victor onto itself.
