Former bodybuilder Khaled Pirzadeh attempted suicide on Monday as an act of protest.
A former bodybuilding champion in Iran that is currently serving a seven-year sentence in prison attempted suicide on Monday.
Khaled Pirzadeh, who is currently held at Evin prison in Tehran, attempted to take his own life as an “act of protest” for what he believed has been poor medical care, according to multiple reports. Following the incident, Pirzadeh was transferred to a hospital to receive stitches to his wound before returning to the prison.
Pirzadeh released an audio message from prison where he accused the authorities at the prison of neglecting medical treatment for his conditions, which includes asthma and seizures. Pirzadeh was also dealing with sciatica pain but claims that it had gotten significantly worse.
According to Iran International, an Instagram account linked back to Pirzadeh shared the news of the suicide attempt.
Khaled Pirzadeh Continues To Protest Against Prison
Khaled Pirzadeh received a new prison sentence of six years after being convicted of “assembly and collusion” for five years and “propaganda against the system” for eight months. He was arrested in September at Ahvaz airport while attempted totravel to Turkey with an invalid passport.
This arrest came after a nine-day hunger strike, which brought on different issues such as convulsions and chest pains. Pirzadeh allegedly has lost over 150 pounds since his bodybuilding days due to different hunger strikes in protest. In July, it was reported that Pirzadeh poured boiling water on himself after being denied the right to make phone calls for three months.
Khaled Pirzadeh was originally sentenced to seven years in prison in June 2019. He has addressed apparent neglect and torture from the prison on multiple occasions prior to his suicide attempt on Monday. Authorities have allegedly not responded to his demands from protests.
