Amanda Nunes Pursuing Superfight With Cris Cyborg

Amanda Nunes is gunning for Cris Cyborg.

Cris Cyborg, the UFC women’s Featherweight champion, has no prominent opponents left to fight after dispatching Holly Holm late last year. Many have suggested she compete against Bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. Cyborg has rejected the idea, questioning Nunes’ drawing power.

Still, Nunes seems confident the fight will happen. Speaking to MMAfigting in Boston she said:

“Honestly, I think she wants this fight. And it’s the fight UFC wants. I want this fight to be good. I don’t have anything against her. At all. I think this is a business deal. After the fight we can have a beer, you know what I mean? It’s not personal.I think it would be awesome. I would be ready, in Brazil, in Vegas, or whatever. Whatever country, let’s 100 percent make this happen.”

Nunes, too is suffering from the lack of depth in women’s MMA. She dispatched Ronda Rousey to win the title, before that the now-retired Meisha Tate, and she owns two victories over Valentina Shevchenko.

The field before her looks bare, and Amanda says she even flirted with the idea of dropping down to 125 pounds,

“First of all, I think about going to 125. This was one of my goals, because I want to be a champion in two divisions. And I sit down with my coach and my whole team and we discuss and talk about my next step to go to either one division, 145 or 125. And I decide I’m going to go to 125. … But then, when I saw my diet, everything I had to go through to go down, I think about it a little bit. Honest to god, it’s hard.”

That project has been abandoned, but she still looks forward to a superfight up at 145 pounds. Cris has hinted that she would be open to the fight provided it is promoted properly, and Amanda seems set on it.

“This is the fight I want, yes,” she said. “Whatever happens, I’m going to be ready.”

With no big options left for either woman, expect to see this fight announced in coming months.
