Opinion: Canelo Alvarez vs Daniel Jacobs Will Make A Rematch With GGG More Exciting

Canelo Alvarez battling Daniel Jacobs can only have positive results.

With the news breaking that the rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will no longer be taking place in September, Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Productions are looking elsewhere for a replacement bout that will get boxing fans excited. So far, it appears that Daniel Jacobs is the front runner for a match up with Canelo Alvarez.

While we may have all been salivating at the rematch between GGG and Canelo Alvarez, this turn of events could prove to be a blessing in disguise. While it may lack the drama that a rematch would produce, Daniel Jacobs versus Canelo Alvarez is a fantastic fight and perhaps a best case scenario.

Both Jacobs and Canelo had fights with GGG that were extremely close, meaning that should either fighter win a match against Kazakhstan native would likely be in their immediate future.

While some fight fans may gripe and potentially even curse Canelo for ducking a fight with GGG, the reality is that a win over Jacobs will further cement his case for being the top contender in the middleweight division. The same can be said for Jacobs who despite being floored by GGG in their match was considered by many to be the better man that night.

Jacobs and Canelo may not have any vitriolic storyline between them, but both men are outstanding boxers. Think of this match as the GGG sweepstakes. Whoever wins this fight gets the opportunity to prove they are superior to Golovkin in a rematch. It gives both men even more incentive to win big in September and in turn builds drama because of what’s at stake.

They say the upcoming match in a fighter’s career is their most important bout, that looking past an opponent is at once dangerous and foolhardy. But in the game of pugilism, especially at the upper echelon of the sport, fighters are looking to leave their mark as the greatest to ever lace up the gloves. There’s no way that Canelo or Jacobs will be distracted by a potential rematch with GGG. But it does make a victory in September all the sweeter.
