Oscar De La Hoya Gives Statement on Cancellation of All Boxing Events in California

Oscar De La Hoya gives statement after cancellation of upcoming boxing events.

The world is being completely transformed by the rise of the coronavirus. It’s been truly something to behold as we’ve watched country after country shut their borders in hopes of minimizing the spread of the pandemic. The president has even banned travel into the United States from people flying in from Europe. Needless to say, things are getting pretty crazy.

The governments of the world are taking action and so too are other organizations including the NBA and NHL who have suspended their seasons due to the coronavirus. And now it would appear that combat sports are following suit.

Reports have come in that the UFC could potentially cancel an upcoming card in Brasilia, Brazil due to coronavirus concerns. Boxing appears to be following the same program as all boxing events in the state of California have been suspended for the month of March.

Golden Boy Promotions, headed by Oscar De La Hoya, were set to have two boxing events this month on both March 19 and March 28. Those events have since been cancelled. Oscar De La Hoya had this to say about the cancellation of boxing events in California.

“This morning, we were informed by the California State Athletic Commission that all combative sports events have been canceled for the month of March. This is due to concerns regarding COVID-19,” said De La Hoya. “Therefore, our March 19 and March 28 events and those scheduled at Avalon Hollywood and the Forum respectively, have officially been postponed.

“We will work with state and local officials. As well as our venue and broadcast partners to determine the best course of action with respect to these and other upcoming events. Both in California and elsewhere.”

“The health and safety of our fighters, fans, employees, officials and partners are of the utmost importance to us.

“We thank them for their support. Their understanding during this time.

“We will communicate further plans when the time is appropriate.”

Note: For those who have already purchased tickets to the events, refunds will be made available at the original point of purchase. If tickets were purchased online, refunds will be processed automatically.

With the coronavirus running rampant it’s clear that intensive government action needs to be taken. A great help would be to implement a universal health care plan that could potentially help millions of people across the country to avoid contracting the virus with no cost.

As of now it appears that is simply a pipe dream, but it can’t be denied that it would play a major role in battling the growing threat of the coronavirus.
