Tom Platz Talks Changes He Wants In Modern Bodybuilding: “We Need Less Science, More Art”

Tom Platz wants the beauty of bodybuilding to come back and explains how to make that happen.

“The Quadfather” of bodybuilding, Tom Platz has criticized today’s era of bodybuilders in the past and recently shared another opinion on social media. In a recent interview, Platz called for the beauty and art of bodybuilding to return rather than letting science take over.

“I think we need less science, more art. Right now, we have science experiments on stage in every category.”

Tom Platz cornered the market on massive legs in bodybuilding. Training and competing alongside other legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane, Lee Haney, and countless others, Platz is well-traveled and has gained a ton of experience that he uses for the benefit of other fitness enthusiasts.

During this conversation, Platz did not focus on one division over another.

“I don’t think that the Figure girls are any less guilty than the Open class. The Bikini girls are taking more anabolic steroids than I did back in my heyday.”

Tom Platz Calls For More Art In Bodybuilding

Tom Platz continued to discuss how competitors are using drugs when they might not have to due to the current requirement in bodybuilding.

“What I hate to see today is, well I don’t have enough genetics so it means more drugs. Well, I have great genetics and I’ll take even more drugs and be the superstar of all-time.”

Platz admits that he tried steroids during certain parts of his career but it did not last long.

“I tried androgenic material. I looked like modern day, I gained a lot of weight, I looked like I was blocky, trying to waddle onto the stage and I said never again.”

There has been an unfortunate stretch of deaths in bodybuilding that have hit the world hard. Steroids might not be linked to all but Platz remains concerned about the health of competitors.

“I liked being involved with something I love. I think this dearly. It wasn’t about the money. It wasn’t about abusing myself. I can barter with god for one more show. I think it’s at an absurd level right now. It’s not the healthiest way to do it and it concerns me about the people dying.”
