Tony Bellew Knocks Out David Haye, Calls Out Andre Ward

Tony Bellew scores big win over David Haye.

This past weekend, at the O2 Arena in London, England Tony Bellew (30-2-1, 20 KOs) prevailed in a spectacular rematch against David Haye (28-4, 26 KOs), knocking his rival out in the fifth round.

In many ways this fight was an archetypal Heavyweight bout. Both men started off slow, using jabs and footwork to test out range and timing. Haye actually made nice adjustments, starting to try and set up some combinations with baiting. Eventually, the action percolated until both men were confident and loose enough to start throwing bombs. Bellew got the better of these exchanges, winning three knockdowns total, the last of which stopped the fight.

The fourth round saw Haye struggle with his right leg, the same leg in which he ruptured his Achilles in his first fight with Bellew. Haye seemed to be very heavy on his feet, which made him overextend and miss Bellew with a lot of his punches. This made “Bomber” begin to pick up the pace and it started to look like the beginning of the end for Haye.

Unfortunately, Haye also appeared to be struggling with his right leg later in the fight. He ruptured the Achilles in that leg during his first fight with Bellew, necessitating a long and arduous recovery process. Achillese tendon injuries are notoriously vexing, and rarely fully recover.

It’s possible Haye re-injured the tendon during his fight.

After the fight, an emotional Bellew paid verbal tribute to his brother-in-law Ashley Roberts, who tragically passed away in August of 2017. He then called out former WBA, WBO and IBF Light-heavyweight champion, and one of the all-time greats, Andre Ward (32-0, 16 KOs).

Ward, age 33, retired from boxing in August 2017. It will be interesting to see if he responds to this challenge.
