Not too tight, not too loose.

In a recent interview, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson shed his thoughts on the upcoming bout between Middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and contender Chris Weidman at UFC 199, June 4th. While the squirrel hunter definitely gives the former champ Chris Weidman his props, he  acknowledges that AKA star Luke Rockhold is a physical specimen on the athletic level of Cam Newton…woah. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXB_5upDer8 What’s great about this video is his definition of athleticism. He hits the nail on the head by saying if you hand someone a skateboard, basketball, or jetski, they’ll probably get it down pretty quickly. Luke Rockhold is known for being an avid surfer and having an athletic family tree with his father being a professional basketball player and his brother a pro surfer. While most people would give Rockhold the freak genetics factor, Weidman is a tough wrestler with a ton of confidence and and extremely high fight IQ. How far does athleticism go in fighting? pretty far, but at the level of the UFC elites it takes a lot more than physical dexterity to retain a championship, especially at the higher weight classes. What’s even more telling than Luke’s Physical prowess, was the observation of Chris Weidman’s mental headspace going into this fight and how the former champion could be over committed.

“I just think it’s dangerous because he’s so invested.” “I just think…a guy getting so fixated on one thing like oh I can beat this guy, and when he loses…he’s going to be devastated.” – Demetrious Johnson

In recent interviews for the card’s promotion, Chris Weidman has admitted to getting overly emotional as he says he feels uncomfortable without the belt. One thing he has not conceited to is the claim that he looks “like a lost puppy” from Luke Rockhold, stating he’s more focused than ever. Is Weidman’s obsession with beating the current champ helpful or harmful?
