Hayley McNeff became a well-known bodybuilder in the mid-2000s.

Bodybuilding champion Hayley McNeff died suddenly at the age of 37 last week. According to her obituary, McNeff passed away on Aug. 8 peacefully. The cause of death is still unknown at this time.

Update (8/15/25) – Hayley McNeff’s have issued a statement to People after news of her passing hit headlines across the globe:

“Hayley was like a beam of light in this world. She had boundless energy and was very determined to achieve whatever she set out to do,” Hayley’s father Dave tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. “She set her sights on bodybuilding and fitness and achieved the highest success that sector offered. She loved us and we love Hayley very much, we miss her madly.”

McNeff enjoyed athletics from a young age and was able to turn it into a career in fitness.

“Hayley was known for her quick wit and constant sense of humor, she had a gift for making those around her laugh and feel welcomed. Her energy and determination was a constant in her life and she always accomplished what she set out to achieve.”

McNeff, who hailed from Concord, earned an Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She later took part in graduate studies in psychology as she was interested in helping others in many avenues.

The Bodybuilding Career of Hayley McNeff

Hayley McNeff showed great interest in skiing, equestrian, and board diving as a youth. As she continued on, McNeff became interested in bodybuilding and was able to become very successful at her peak.

McNeff became a well-known competitor in the mid-2000s. She won multiple competitions during her career, highlighted by a first-place finish during the 2009 East Coast Classic, where she finished at the top overall.

McNeff went onto become featured in the documentary “Raising The Bar.” Many fans took to social media to share their condolences while her obituary shared many traits.

“She treasured her friendships and nurtured strong, lasting relationships with those who knew her best. Hayley will be deeply missed by her parents, siblings, extended family, and friends.”

The tragic death of Hayley McNeff is another in line of unfortunate events in the sport of bodybuilding. Many competitors have passed in recent years for different reasons.

In May, IFBB Pro Pablo Ayala passed away following a long battle with cancer. Ayala, who hailed from Paraguay, enjoyed a successful career where he competed at many of the top shows of the year. This includes the Tampa Pro and New York Pro on multiple occasions. Ayala last competed in 2018 during the George Farah Classic Italy Pro. Along with his own career on stage, Pablo Ayala was committed to training others to become the best version of themselves, very similar to McNeff.

Generation Iron sends condolences to family and friends during this time. For more news and updates, follow Generation Iron on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
