Walter O’Malley enjoyed a successful career on stage in international bodybuilding.
UK bodybuilding legend Walter O’Malley has passed away. His family confirmed the news in a social media post last week that O’Malley died last Monday. A cause of death has not been shared at this time. O’Malley was approaching 90 years old.
Thomas Young, owner of O’Malley’s gym, also shared the news on Instagram.
“It is with great sadness that we regret to inform you all of the passing of our great leader, Walter O’Malley. A legend and a hero to all of us, take this day to remember the memories he gave us.”
After a successful career on stage, O’Malley continued to be an important figure back home in North West England. He opened a gym in Warrington where he could interact and help others build the best versions of themselves. Many took to social media to share memories of O’Malley, including WWE legend Davey Boy Smith Jr.
“Sad to hear the news of one of my dad’s best friends, training partners, and someone who my dad looked up to. Even though I hadn’t seen Walter in many years, I have lots of great memories with all of us.”
The Career of Walter O’Malley
Walter O’Malley built an incredible reputation in the NABBA federation during his career. He found a passion for fitness early and was able to turn it into a successful life.
O’Malley competed in the Mr. Universe competition in the Tall division five times, finishing as the runner-up in 1973 and 1974. He is also a former champion of the Mr. World – AAU, Most Muscular and Tall.
In 1982, O’Malley competed in the IFBB. He finished top five in the heavyweight division during the European Amateur Championships. He went on to take part in the World Amateur Championships that same year.
