The city of Los Angeles shut down the power at Bradley Martyn’s Zoo Culture gym… so Bradley decided to fight back
In this clip, Bradley Martyn faces increased pressure from the city of Los Angeles during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the city officially shutting down the power to his gym – Bradley had to fight back and get the power turned on by any means necessary. Check out the exclusive clip above!
During the height of the COVID-19 panedemic, majority of the United States went into a mandated lockdown. Most major city, particularly, mandated that certain businesses must shut down. This included gyms – which put Bradley Martyn and his gym patrons in a challenging position.
Like many private and local business owners, the mandated shutdowns across the country posed serious risks. How long would the shutdown last? And how would local businesses survive without income for an extended period of time?
Rather than wait to find out, Bradley Martyn made the decision to keep his gym open. As increased data showed that physical fitness was a vital component to being more capable of surviving infection, Bradley felt it was unfair for gyms to be forced into closure while businesses such as liquor stores could stay open for business.
The City Of Los Angeles Increases Pressure, Shuts Down Zoo Culture’s Power
With Bradley Martyn openly breaking the city’s mandate, he was being fined for every day that he kept the gym open. Bradley was willing to take the hit – as he believed that keeping the gym open was the morally right thing to do.
However the city did not stop there. With Bradley showing no signs of shutting down Zoo Culture, Los Angeles sent city representatives to manually shut down the gym’s power. City officials locked up the power box in a heavy duty padlock, and left Bradley, his employees, and the gym members without power.
Bradley Martyn Forces His Way Back To Power
Despite there being no power in the gym, Bradley Martyn continued to keep the gym open. And the most loyal of gym members continued to train at the gym. Using a combination of a portable generator alongside manual methods – Zoo Culture continued to function.
Of course, Bradley Martyn wasn’t satisfied by sticking with this encumbering solution. So eventually he went back to the power box for the gym and forced open the city’s padlock. It took three individuals together to pry open the lock – but they eventually succeeded. They then replaced the lock with one of their own so that the city could no longer have access to the power of the facilities.
The decision to shut down certain businesses was very controversial during the first year of the pandemic. And there are certainly nuanced arguments on both sides supporting or opposing the decisions that many states and cities made during the height of COVID-19.
But to Bradley Martyn, the decision to keep the gym open wasn’t selfish. He committed to safety procautions such as masks, social distancing, and taking the temperature of every patron and employee at the gym. He followed the exact same guidelines allowed for business that were kept open – such as liquor stores or grocery stores.
In Bradley’s mind, his inability to explain defend his right to keep the gym open, no questions asked, was a bridge too far. So returning the power back to his gym felt like a victory against the city’s overreach.
As one of Bradley’s employees and friends puts it:
“It was like something that was our stand against the city. Our stand against something that wasn’t right.”
