Cody Montgomery Is Moving To Classic Physique. Are Bodybuilders Done With Open Weight?

Cody Montgomery is the next to make the big switch.

So it seems that these days bodybuilders are looking to avoid blowing up their bodies to be competitive in the open weight division. Regan Grimes recently stated his intentions to leave the Open Weight division behind in favor of competing in Classic Physique. While some have criticized the move, ultimately it was a decision that Grimes made in order to preserve his health. Now it seems that another young up and comer is looking to make the switch to the Classic Physique division as well.

Cody Montgomery hasn’t been seen on stage since competing at the 2016 Arnold Classic, the first pro show of his career. Many advised against the move stating that the newly minted pro had no chance against the veterans of the division. Nevertheless, Cody Montgomery found found himself on stage and facing off against the some of the best bodybuilders in the world including Kai Greene and Cedric McMillan. As a result, Montgomery ended up in last place leaving a ton of question marks as to his mindset. It was the first time he had ever lost a show, let alone come in last place. The loss prompted some deep thinking from the young pro, particularly on where he saw his career going after the loss.

Fast forward to 2018 and it appears that Cody Montgomery has finally made up his mind as to what his next move should be. Montgomery’s Instagram page was the first clue that he was going to make a change before eventual confirming his decision.

So what does this say about the Open Weight division? Are competitors afraid of working hard like some individuals are suggesting or is there something more to it than that? Could the death of bodybuilders like Rich Piana and Dallas McCarver have sparked a new trend? Many are sighting that their health is the reason for their decision to switch division, that being massive is just not what they desire or want for their bodies. As of now we’ll have to take these competitors by their word, but it’s definitely saying something about the current state of heavyweight bodybuilding.

What do you think of Cody Montgomery moving to Classic Physique?
