FDA Continues Crackdown on Androgenic SARMs

by Nicholas Bell Published on Jan 13, 2018

Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators, or SARMs, have come into vogue as performance enhancers in the past few years.

Just last March the Knicks’ NBA player Joakim Noah was banned for 20 games after testing positive for SARMs. And if the NBA actually catch someone for a PED, it’s likely in wide use.

Although SARMs have not been approved for human consumption, they are predictably making their way into the supplement industry. Last year Dynamic Technical Formulations illegally sold a product called ‘Tri-ton,’ which contained a SARM, marketed as a “physique enhancing agent.”

The product was recalled, and the FDA conducted an inspection of DTF facilities. Now they have published a warning letter sent to owner William T. Wotiz, citing many problems.

One major criticism is that, because no DTF employees had FDA recognized education, training, or experience, the company cannot seriously ensure the purity, strength or composition of it’s products.

In addition, the contact information on the warning label was the company’s old address and a phone number that went to a voice recording about the FDA‘s program.

Many other DTF brands and products were deemed adulterated because of the lack of quality control measures.
DTF responded to the FDA’s inspection claiming that it was implementing corrective measures, but in it’s letter the FDA merely countered that:

“We will verify the sufficiency of your corrective action during our next inspection.”

DTF is not alone in this situation. The FDA has issued many inspections and warnings to other companies who market SARMS. In an October advisory the FDA announced:

“We are extremely concerned about unscrupulous companies marketing body-building products with potentially dangerous ingredients. We will continue to take action against companies marketing these products to protect public health.”

Among the dangers of SARM’s cited by the FDA are various “life-threatening” reactions including liver toxicity, and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

To many, this rhetoric about ‘protecting public health’ rings hollow, as it takes no time at all to find dozens of FDA approved products that pose the same risks. Including alcohol, which kills thousands in America each year.
