Former Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones Must Provide All Known Info On UFC PED Users

Jon Jones Must Provide All Known Info On UFC PED Users

The saga of former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been a truly rocky and bizarre, madcap adventure. The former pound for pound king in mixed martial arts, Jon Jones has since become a pariah and media darling after multiple brushes with the law as well as failing a number of drug tests which has tarnished his UFC legacy forever.

After making a successful comeback against arch rival Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, Jon Jones popped for performance enhancing drugs, instantly tarnishing his win and losing the light heavyweight title as a result. It seemed that things couldn’t have possibly gotten worse for the former champ. But now that Jones has been cleared to fight by the anti-doping agency USADA, things appear to be looking up for the former light heavyweight kingpin.

Jon Jones had already served 15 months of suspension. The maximum potential suspension time Jones faced was a full four years, but now it appears that he’s received a reduced sentence by USADA, the former champion discounted 30 months. The only catch is that Jones is expected to become an informant for the anti-doping agency, forced to provide any and all information he may have on other PED users within the ranks of the UFC.

But while many believe that the former champion is submitting evidence on other fighters, Jon Jones’ agent Malki Kawa explained that isn’t exactly the case. Jones is expected to give “Substantial assistance” to USADA, but Kawa explains that it may not be as cut and dry as everyone may be thinking, the agent said as much on his appearance on The MMA Hour with Luke Thomas this past Monday.

“Substantial assistance doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be about someone else, it could be about himself,” said Kawa on The MMA Hour.

“It’s not like Jon sits in a room somewhere and watches people do steroids, and then he’s like, ‘Hey man, guess what, my teammate over here is doing steroids,’” Kawa said. “Jon goes and trains, gets his stuff, and he goes home. He doesn’t take a shower there. He doesn’t really hang out there. He comes in, does his thing, and he leaves. So he doesn’t sit there and hang out like that, or would know about anyone that does that. He doesn’t do that. So when people say these things, to me, it’s a funny thing.

“I’m assuming if Jon’s name comes up in something, and he was to know something, he would have to be cooperative with them. But I don’t know of a deal where it’s like, ‘Hey, we’re going to continue to’ – I don’t know about that. That’s not how it went down. I don’t want to assume anything or have this turn into a disaster all of a sudden. But from what I understand, a lot of the stuff they were talking about had to do with him – not other people.”

Despite that fact, a great deal of fans don’t seem to be pleased with these most recent turn of events. Jon Jones’ fall from grace hasn’t been a pretty one, yet he could still potentially turn things around with another strong performance inside the octagon. For now we’ll have to wait and see how things turn out, as well as if Jones will be forgiven for his past and future actions.
