Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia: Someone’s O Has to Go

Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia lock horns in a massive fight this weekend.

Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia will finally lock horns this weekend in a much-anticipated showdown. Both have the ability to knock out their opposition which will make for a tantalizing experience.

One of the biggest fights in modern boxing is upon us. The battle between Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and ‘King’ Ryan Garcia is one fans have been waiting to see for a long time now. Rather than wait until they’re outside their prime, Davis and Garcia are giving the fans what they want. What can be expected from this bout is high-paced fireworks.

Both Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia have big power and speed, but it will be the intangibles that will win this fight. Let’s get a closer look, shall we?

Ryan Garcia

There’s no sugarcoating it, Ryan Garcia will have an uphill battle against Davis. Garcia has faced the lesser opposition of the two. In past fights Garcia made the kind of mistakes that could cost him against Davis.

The first thing to consider is the battle of stances. Ryan Garcia fights out of the orthodox or right-handed stance while Davis fights from the southpaw or left-handed stance. This is called an open stance battle. Usually, when you have this kind of matchup it’s best for either opponent to get their lead foot on the outside of their opposition’s lead foot. Garcia does not do this. At least not as much as he should. Garcia has a tendency to step his lead foot inside of his opponent’s lead foot. This often gets him out of position and leaves him open for counters. This has been a bad habit in past fights for Garcia, one he’ll need to break if he hopes to win against Davis.

What Ryan Garcia should do in this fight is utilize his jab and straight right hands to open a lane for his fast and powerful left hook. Gervonta Davis sometimes leaves an opening when he uses a Philly shell defense. The opening leaves him susceptible to sharp orthodox jabs and left hooks. Garcia has the superior hand speed which he’ll need to use to his advantage. If he can’t land that left hook then you can be sure it will be a long night for the self-proclaimed ’King’.

Gervonta Davis

The most devastating power puncher in the lighter weight classes, Gervonta Davis has become must-see TV. With his sharp footwork and incredible counter ability, Davis is dangerous for all twelve rounds in the ring.

Being the shorter fighter, in this contest, Gervonta Davis will want to close the gap and put a lot of pressure on Ryan Garcia. Davis has a great ability to work behind his job and set up counter opportunities and this fight should be no different. We are Garcia possesses the faster. Hans of the two, Davis has the more impressive footwork. Davis is fleet of foot and knows how to create angles, which is sure to give Garcia fits.

Perhaps the biggest weakness in Gervonta Davis’ game is when he goes into his Philly Shell defense (rear hand by the chin/jaw, lead hand down by the waist). The defense works better when you have the same stance as your opponent. But since Davis fights from the southpaw stance and Garcia fights from the orthodox stance, going into the Philly Shell guard sometimes leaves Davis open from the right side. If Davis isn’t careful we could see Garcia landing a flush left hook and end the night quickly for Davis.

The key for Gervonta Davis to end the night early for Ryan Garcia is timing a counter left overhand or left uppercut. It will all depend on timing. After all, timing beats speed.
