The video shows Jeff Nippard being grabbed at the throat and shoved by Mike Van Wyck

In a shocking turn of events, popular fitness YouTuber Jeff Nippard appears to have been assaulted by fellow bodybuilder Mike Van Wyck in a gym confrontation that was captured on video. The footage, which has quickly gone viral across social media, shows Van Wyck grabbing Jeff Nippard by the throat before shoving him across the gym. The incident has sparked widespread discussion in the fitness community, with many questioning what led to the violent altercation.

The confrontation seems to be connected to a recent reaction video posted by Jeff Nippard on his Instagram, where he responded to a controversial statement made by Mike Van Wyck. In Van Wyck’s original post, he questioned the legitimacy of “science-based lifters,” asking, “Why are science-based lifters so mediocre?”

This jab at fitness influencers who prioritize research and evidence-based training strategies over more traditional, instinctual approaches seemed to strike a nerve with Nippard, who is well-known for his scientific approach to fitness.

The Reaction Video That Started It All

Jeff Nippard, a professional natural bodybuilder and fitness educator, wasted no time responding to Van Wyck’s remark. In his reaction video, Nippard defended the value of science-based lifting and his own credentials as a coach and athlete. He explained that just because he isn’t a Mr. Olympia competitor doesn’t mean the information he shares is inaccurate or irrelevant. Nippard, who holds a degree in biochemistry, emphasized that the principles of science are based on evidence and that they apply universally, whether someone is a recreational lifter or a professional bodybuilder.

One key point Jeff Nippard raised in his rebuttal was that even top athletes like four-time Mr. Olympia Classic Physique champion Chris Bumstead rely on coaches for training and nutrition guidance. Explaining that even the best in the world need expert advice, Nippard pointed out, using Bumstead as a prime example of how science and coaching are essential, even at the highest levels of bodybuilding.

The video was well-received by Nippard’s followers, many of whom agreed with his message. However, it seems that Van Wyck wasn’t too pleased with Nippard’s response. You can watch Jeff Nippard’s reaction video below:

The Gym Confrontation

Reports suggest that just a day or two after Jeff Nippard’s reaction video was posted, Mike Van Wyck encountered Nippard at a gym. What started as a verbal confrontation quickly escalated into physical violence. The video, originally posted by fitness coach Joel Twinem on his Instagram account @tnutrition_fitness, shows Van Wyck grabbing Nippard by the throat before forcefully shoving him. The short clip has been widely shared across social media platforms, sparking outrage and concern from the fitness community.

Twinem, who has since posted a follow-up video, has confirmed that the altercation was not staged and that it went beyond what was captured on the initial clip.

“Quick update on the situation of Jeff getting attacked by Big Mike Van Wyck. To answer a few of your questions, you’re asking for the original video, this is the original video. I’m the first one to post about this. Second, this was not staged. Not in any regard. Third, this is not the only assault that happened. I have confirmed with witnesses that there was more. Unfortunately, I do not have access to that footage but Mike went on to continue to assault him.” Twinem said in his follow-up post.

He went on to reveal that witnesses confirmed Van Wyck continued to assault Nippard after the video cut off. However, Twinem noted that he does not have access to additional footage of the incident. You can watch Twinem’s explanation video – which also showcases footage of the assault, below:

Who Is Mike Van Wyck?

Mike Van Wyck is a Canadian bodybuilder and coach known for his imposing size and no-nonsense approach to training. With decades of experience in the bodybuilding world, Van Wyck has cultivated a reputation for his hardcore methods, often focusing on heavy, high-intensity training routines. Though not a mainstream competitor like Nippard, Van Wyck has built a strong following on social media for his raw, unapologetic takes on fitness and bodybuilding.

His comment questioning the effectiveness of “science-based” lifting aligns with his general philosophy, which prioritizes real-world experience and results over what he perceives as over-complicated, academic approaches to training. However, this latest incident, if accurate to what has been shown, has cast a shadow over his public image, as many are criticizing his resort to violence in what could have remained a professional disagreement.

Jeff Nippard: Fitness Educator and Natural Bodybuilder

On the other hand, Jeff Nippard is a well-respected figure in the fitness industry, known for blending scientific research with practical bodybuilding advice. With over 3.5 million subscribers on YouTube, Nippard has carved out a niche for himself by breaking down complex fitness concepts into digestible, evidence-based content. His background in biochemistry and natural bodybuilding makes him a unique voice in the fitness world, often advocating for a balanced approach that combines research and practical application.

Jeff Nippard’s followers admire his commitment to educating lifters on proper training techniques, injury prevention, and nutritional science. His response to Van Wyck’s comment reflects his ongoing mission to defend the legitimacy of science-based lifting, especially in an industry where anecdotal methods sometimes overshadow evidence-based practices.

Joel Twinem: The Coach Who Posted The Video

Joel Twinem, the fitness coach who posted the video of the assault, has also found himself in the spotlight following the incident. Twinem, a Canadian coach with a focus on nutrition and bodybuilding, has used his platform to provide updates on the situation.

While not directly involved in the altercation, Twinem’s decision to share the footage has been seen as both controversial and necessary, depending on who you ask. Many fans believe that exposing the assault was the right thing to do, while others question whether the situation should have been handled privately.

What Happens Next?

As of now, neither Jeff Nippard nor Mike Van Wyck has issued an official statement regarding the altercation. It’s unclear whether any legal action will be taken or if the situation will be resolved privately. However, the incident has already left a significant impact on both of their public images, with fans of both athletes taking sides in the ongoing debate over science-based training versus traditional bodybuilding approaches.

While the fitness community awaits further developments, this incident serves as a stark reminder of how heated disputes in the fitness industry can become when personal beliefs and professional reputations collide.
