Joey Chestnut set a new world record of 83 hot dogs!
It had been 15 years since Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi took the stage together. On Monday night, the two went head-to-head in a hot dog eating contest on Netflix’s Labor Day special “Unfinished Beef.” Chestnut continued to be the best in the world, beating his world record as he ate 83 hot dogs and buns during the competition.

Competitors were given 10 minutes to eat as many hot dogs as possible, similar to the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, but were not permitted to dunk the hot dogs or buns in water or other liquid. Kobayashi put up a strong effort with 66 hot dogs and buns eaten but fell short of Chestnut, who earned the $100,000 prize.
“I’ve been trying to hit 80 hot dogs for years and without Kobayashi, I was never able to. He drives me. We weren’t always nice to each other but we push each other to be our best.”
Chestnut did not compete at the 2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest after agreeing to a deal with a rival company. Organizers from the event worked hard to meet the demands of Chestnut but he ultimately chose to represent Impossible Foods, a plant-based food company, launched a vegan hot dog that is made from plants.
Joey Chestnut Defeats Kobayashi In Renewal Of Rivalry
The rivalry between Joey Chestnut and Kobayashi began in 2005 when the two first took the stage together. Kobayashi began his reign in 2001 with his first victory and defeated Chestnut in 2005-06. He would take the crown from Kobayashi in 2007 by eating 66 hot dogs.
Chestnut would go onto defeat Kobayashi two more times before a contract dispute meant that the six-time champion would no longer be able to compete. Chestnut went onto win 16 Mustard Belts before missing out on the competition in 2024. Patrick Bertoletti won his first title in 2024 by eating 58 hot dogs. Chestnut’s last victory in Coney Island came in 2023, when he downed 62 hot dogs.

The two began the competition neck and neck before Chestnut began to gain an advantage midway through. He pulled away late and earned his fourth victory over Kobayashi. Joey Chestnut was unable to compete on the Fourth of July this year but proved once again that he is the king of hot dogs.
