Kelvin Gastelum KO’s Bisping, Looks To Jump The Line

On Saturday at UFC Shanghai, Kelvin Gastelum earned the biggest win of his career with a first round knockout over former Middleweight champion Michael Bisping.

Bisping, 38, took the short-notice fight against Gastelum three weeks after getting knocked down and choked out by Georges St-Pierre in their main event title bout at UFC 217. Kelvin has received criticism in the past for his inability to control his weigh and for his electric performances against fighters considered to be past their prime.

Besides Bisping, Gastelum has recently beaten Vitor Belfort, Johny Hendricks, Tim Kennedy, and would have fought Anderson Silva had Silva not failed an out of competition drug test. These fighters, while all skilled, are considered to be part of the ‘Old Guard’ of MMA, and many have experienced sharp performance declineds following the induction of USADA drug testing.

After the win over Bisping, Gastelum addressed these criticisms after the fight by calling out the Interim champion Robert Whittaker for UFC 221 in Perth Australia.

“I heard Robert Whittaker needs a main event opponent over in Australia for February, and I’m up for the challenge,” Gastelum told the media in Shanghai. “You guys say I beat up all the elderly, and Robert Whittaker is definitely not elderly. He’s probably my age, so I’m up for the challenge.”

Whittaker is far and away the best fighter to headline the show in his home country of Australia. But yet again, the UFC has dug itself into a hole by allowing GSP to take the belt from Bisping. Interim champ Whittaker has no incentive to take a fight that is not for the undisputed belt, and there is absolutely no indication that GSP wants to fight soon or will relinquish the belt. With one ‘superfight’ the UFC has jammed an entire division.

Another man eager for a shot at Whittaker is Luke Rockhold, fresh off a comeback win over David Branch. The former champion is still at the top of his game, but has been relatively inactive, only open to a fight for the belt or against Yoel Romero. This pickiness could cost him if Gastelum is given a shot at Whittaker, however, most UFC fans are hoping that no Interim champion will ever be expected to defend the Interim belt belt. At that point UFC belts will be little more than promotional props.
